Joining the competition this weekend

Hi all. I learned to program by making bad video games with QBASIC back in the day. Recently I decided to start making video games again for fun. I found this site by chance and am excited to fail the competition this weekend!

I saw “QBASIC” and got all excited that you want to make a game in QBASIC – then I read the whole sentence, haha. I started with QBASIC too!

Weapons of choice

I will be using:

  • Photoshop
  • Chipsounds
  • Sublime

I am currently between crafty.js and pygame but leaning towards crafty.

Will update with a final decision after I brainstorm on this theme. Also have a pic of my work station – will post that later. Will also make a time lapse of computer work.

You only get one styrofoam cup

I will be updating my progress in this post. Anyone who would like to follow what I’m doing should keep an eye on this post for updates.

Here’s where I’m at so far:

Dec 13
9:00pm – laying down to take a 1 hour nap

Dec 14
3:50am – just woke up. my hour nap turned into many hours. starting development on a game about about a homeless person who only has one styrofoam cup. wander the streets getting donations and trying to survive.
4:08am – unable to record timelapse – macbook air can’t keep up while using photoshop – causes Wacom to lag. This sucks. Will have to figure it out for next time.
5:55am – finished character design, initial sprite and loose concept for game on paper. moving on to more graphics.
7:55am – put more graphics together. moving on to code. will be using crafty.js

8:34am – created character backstory and ate breakfast instead of starting code (which is next).

Game description:
You are Lestor. After getting your girlfriend pregnant, you drop out of high school, get married and take a construction job to support the baby. But, like most marriages, yours is doomed. You lead a relatively quiet life until one day you get a call from the police. Upon talking to the officer you soon learn that your wife and child have been killed in a car accident.

You spiral into a deep depression, nursing your wounds with drugs and alcohol. Months turn into years and habits turn into addictions. You are old and broken. You have no ability to work, no insurance, no surviving relatives, and no home. Nothing, but a styrofoam cup.

8:38am – Starting code
11:07am – Created a busstop and lamp post for scene.
11:17am – First scene with crafty is set up, heading for a shower.

first scene

5:33pmPre-alpha footage trailer. I’m fairly certain I’ll need to cut features and limit game play to a single level (the bus stop) in order to finish by tomorrow. If this gets any interest I’d like to expand the game a bit.

7:44pm – Things are on track. I have an intro screen, more graphics (including a city bus and a sports car). Might need a break soon.

Homeless the Game… most likely the latest Ludum fail

I had to switch to pyglet because Crafty wasn’t playing nice. I don’t know how much of the game I will have together by deadline, however I will be continuing development of this game. I created a mailing list in case anyone wants to keep an eye on the development of the game. will put a website together in the next week or two:

Managed to complete a version of HOMELESS the Game

Was able to get everything submitted, however I’m not crazy about the end result.

Here are some features that I had to remove in order to get something completed on time:

  • Ultimately I want Homeless to play like a Homeless person survival simulator. So I need to convert this little preview into that.
  • More art
  • More levels
  • Ability to use the bus
  • Ability to pick up coins
  • Ability to recharge health (which will allow you to move faster).
  • Deal with crippling cigarette / alcohol / drug addiction.
  • Cross platform (OS X only right now, windows / linux machine is giving me problems so i couldn’t create the install files).

Lastly: homeslessness is terrible. i like social commentary and satire. i need to adjust the product a bit, and i hope the end result will reflect those things properly.
