LD23

We or I’m In!

To clarify the hard to understand title I would like start with  saying that we are four guys that love games aswell as making them!

We joined the last Jam competition last LD and we really enjoyed it! It’s alot of fun :)

So down to the title,

Depending on my teammates schedule  this account will reperesent either the team (DalsGames) in the jam or me alone (Dals) in the compo!

If  we decide to join in as a team we will use the following tools :

Programming:
GameMaker (Only GML)

Graphics/Art:

Photoshop,Gamemaker editor,paint.net,paint

Sound:

Sfxr, audacity, and probably something else, (I’m not the sound guy!)

Software:

Skype to stay in touch!

Google docs to structure the work and for planing!

If I join by myself it will probably look something like this:

Programming language: C++
Library: CDX
IDE: Code::Blocks or  Visual c++ express

Graphics: Paint.net,Gimp,pen,paper

Sound: sfxr for sure…Maybe sing something for background music 😛

We are really looking forward to this and we are hoping that everyone will be able to join in! We are here to learn and have fun!

Whatever the outcome, the final product will be, we know it will be worth it 😀

Untitled Game

Hey guys!

We have not told anything about our game yet because we have been focused to get the prototype going and we had some real life stuff to attend to.

We come up with an idea pretty fast.

You wake up on a field and find your self to be a Giant in a Tiny world with Tiny little people!Your task is to become small again by collecting three diffrent artifacts that can break your curse.

The programming has gone nicely but we haven’t spent so much time on creating the levels. Graphics is are being worked on right now.

We just wanted to make a post and see if anyone likes the idea.

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ screenshot100 screenshot103

Now back to coding!

Timelapse of the development : http://youtu.be/r2fmhVxA-EU

What went well:
>>We came up with an idea fast and we thought it would fit the team in it’s own way.
>> We managed to do all the things we wanted for the games.
>> We all knew our software well and progress was made fast.
>> Coding went well.
>> Managed to finish the game in time!

What could have gone better::
>> Started earlier! Too much real world stuff going on!
>> Create more depth for the game.
>> Better communication among the group!

We think that this was an really exiting event we enjoyed our selves very much!
We are happy with the outcome of the game and we are allready looking forward to the next LD!

Progress with still untitled game!!

We are finally done with the core mechanism of the game now and we should be able to start adding features to it!

Just a minor update, all feedback is appreciated.

Test here

Day 1 is over!

Now the first day is over for us! We have made a decent amount of progress to our core game mechanism and tomorrow we will start adding stuff and polishing the game!

Our game idea is that you are trapped in a house and have to go trough all the rooms and find different things in them. Every time you finished a room you have to start over and redo everything except that you have a new item to your disposal that will help you to unlock the next room. Therefore you will evolve!

Try it out here!

Feedback is appreciated:D

If you do THANK YOU 😀 All response is appreciated!

Almost a week has gone by since Ludum Dare and finally I’ve got some time to write a post moretm.

So let us jump straight in to it!

  • What went right:
  • Good teamwork. We spent the whole weekend together instead of collaboration via Skype. I think this was a big help for the motivation and the creativity. Who wants to let their team down?
  • We knew our tools which made us work quickly and effectively. Even if this was our first game written in JAVA, before we have used Game Maker. (Except for git!)
  • We created the core mechanism in the first day.
  • Good collision detection this time! We are very happy and if we may say proud of it!
  • We learnt a lot!
  • We had lots of fun! 😀

What went wrong:

  • Hard theme, we didn’t come up with an idea that matched the theme exactly!
  • Learning how to use a version system (Git) is not the best thing during the compo! On the other hand we know it know!
  • AI is hard!
  • some fatal bugs!
  • Somehow the menu for the game would work. The background for the menu was drawn in eclipse but when we exported it to a jar it didn’t work!?!? Althoug we used the same method as with all the other assets and that worked fine!

I (Dals) is working on a post-compo version that will remove most of the bugs and hopefully contain more levels 😀

If you want you can check out the timelaps of the development here!

Well I think that’s it for now. Already longing for the next Ludum Dare! Till then, keep jaming 😀

A late but Colourful entry :)

Well.. I did not quit finish the October challenge 😉 But now 20 days due I’ve finally come up with an idea, created it and published it to the market.

Colours

Let my present to you my first complete game “Colours“. A game app for android. It’s a game about colours (duh!) and the objective is to match a randomly generated colour with the help of three sliders that represent the primary colours Red, Green and Blue.

The faster you do it the more points will you earn and you can submit your score to a high-score list. With every level completed the game also gets harder and harder.

I would be really glad if you would like to test it out and tell my what you think.
It comes in a “lite” version and a paid version. The paid version because of the goal of the October challenge to earn one dollar :)

Our team consits of 4 people.
2 Programmers
1 Music and sound effect creator.
2 Graphics designers and game designers.
You will have to find out how that adds up to 4 by your self.

Our tools:

Programming language: Java
Framework: Slick2D with our own layer of abstraction on top of it.
Gfx: Gimp and Graphicsh Gale
Sound effects: ?! Sfx
Music: ?

You can check out our last entries here.

We will be livingstreaming this event aswell (Link comming!).

Good luck to all!

Progress on Cubic

Our game is a small platform game were you have to stay alive as long as possible!
But it comes with a twist(yet to be implemented) is that the screen is rotating. Makes it really hard to bet the high score which is at the moment: 641 points.

Space Time- Postmortem

Space-Time

PLAY THE GAME HERE (Thanks!)

Hey all,
this was our 6th Ludum Dare. We almost did not make it this time. Not because we run out of time but because we said that we would not enter this time around due to some other commitments from the team members. However I (Dals) could not stand that our stream would break for a silly thing so I decided to make a small but simple game. We last all Saturday because of this but we actually had time to put like 6-7 hours into a small game in the end. On the sunday I was joined by my friend who helped out with the programming and gameplay.

What went right:

We knew that we had lost a whole day and because of that we made sure that we aimed on a game with a scope so small that we would finish it relativly fast. We stuck to this and that was very important for the success for this project.

Another thing that went right was the use of tools. We were not able to get togheter this time around so Skype and git really saved a lot of problems for us. Git is super great when you learn to use it and this time we really knew how to. We also used Java as a programming language wich we are most comfortable in. The new thing for this Ludum Dare was that we used the awesome LibGDX framework as the backbone of our project. In the weeks before Ludum Dare I had explored GDX and made a small API for it called Simple. That made the development of this small game even faster and it was blazingly fun.

Basically we knew our tech and made clear and structured goals. We also did not have time to suffer from feature creep which was great in the sense that we finished it.

What went wrong:

Apart from not being able to join in from the beginning almost nothing went wrong.
So well all that went wrong was that we did not have time to attend the whole event.

Conclusion:

Ludum Dare is a great way to make games and give out to your creativity. I was very happy with theme 10 seconds, as soon as I saw it in the last round I basically knew that it would win. I had lots of ideas for it but when it turned out that we were not able to attend the whole event I scrapt all of them but when I got a little time to spare I sat down and made the most simple game that come to my mind.

This time around we did not have so much time but we actually made a game anyway. Maybe our most polished and complete game as of what it is. We are proud of what we did and we are already looking forward to the next Ludum Dare when we can join in for the full event.

Cheers guys,
~Dals with team!

I am in!

This will be my 7th time participating in the Ludum Dare, in a row. Thanks to this awesome game jam I have learnt so much about programming and game development. I am really looking forward to it this time around. One of my friends will join me and we will be jamming all trough the weekend.

Our weapons of choice are:

============================

IDE: Eclipse

Language: Java

Game Engine: libGDX

Framework: Simple (My tiny wrapper around libGDX)

Art: Gimp/Photoshop and a shit load of luck.

Sound: Sfxr

================================

Will probably be livestreaming our session at twitch and I will be making a timelapse.

All the code and assets will be publicly available on github under my account.

I will be tweeting from @dixumgames sharing as we go.

Good luck to you all!

Status update #1

Hey guys, I have been awfully quit since launch. We came up with an idea after an hour and we have kept it this far.
We are super hyped about and we find it so much fun to develop this game.
The essential boils down to; You have a loan from a loanshark. You have one day to get the money to him or he will kill you and everyone you love.
You decided that you need to steal the money from others.
Yeah that is as far as we have come…
I have everyone is enjoying themself and having a good time.
Cheers
Dals
