LD27

First LD!

Hi everyone,

This is my first LD contribution :)

I’ll use these tools:

  • Haxe as prog language
  • cfxr for the sounds
  • WolframTones for the music
  • Photoshop for pixel related stuff

No other lib will be used, may be a couple of homebrewed snippets wandering around, but I plan on doing it the hard way hehe

Theme discovery

Well, it’s not that bad to wake up and discover the compo theme, event though the “10 seconds” wasn’t my favourite.

Too many ideas, not much time :-)

I’ll try to get an – makeable – idea within the next two hours and hope for some super productivity.

Well well…

It sounds like it going to be very difficult to get this LD done.

I got the idea, which I kinda like. Realizing it isn’t really difficult as It consists of a point and click without much animation and some dialogs (I focused on the story part of the 10 seconds).

What is killing my time is that I went with no library of any kind, and just getting the basic flow done took me way too long to deal with the real part of the game.

I’m not giving up, but this is the point I feel like I need much more training to make it through game jams.

Before-sleep-update

I finally have a title for this to-be-unfinished game: “The Missing Clue”.

It is a Point and click, and will be my first one – too – by the way.

The main character is a badly injured police officer who awakes at the hospital.
He must remember what happened there and recollect the proofs he was looking for.
But in this condition, he can only focus for 10 seconds :-)

There are so many things left to do, I’m getting pessimistic:

  1. The items collecting logic isn’t near to done, it’s even not barely started.
  2. Graphics are at a point where only I know a pink rectangle is a cupboard. Lot of work here.
  3. More dialogs to imagine between the characters.
  4. Sound? What is it?

Anyway, I must admit doing this Ludum Dare is an enjoyable thing for me.
I wanted this weekend not to be 100% pure code-monkeying, and I made it!

Had kind of proper meals, watched a movie, and even saved some time for a couple of beers :-)

Giving up for this one

… But I plan on taking the next one successfully  :)

The game current state is:

  • There are no “finished” asset
  • Items action binding is very, very far from being done, which is a shame when the main part of the game relies on these mechanics
  • Still no sound

There are not so many things that I wanted to to in this game; I had a story I kinda liked, I was pretty quick to find what to do with the “10 seconds” theme.

What was – I think – the major mistake I made was to think I could do a full game from scratch with little experience with the language I choose – was haxe, even though it’s far from being a cryptic language -, and without preparing any lib of any kind.

This was a silly move, and the time lost to the scene managing, generic event handling and such, got me into big trouble without noticing it at first.
– It’ ok, I got time.
– Well, no my dear, you’ve been a bit too optimistic.

I also found myself being way too slow for getting anything done correctly code-wise, which is a problem when you have this little amount of time :-)

I have some time to decently prepare the next LD, build up more skill on haxe, and be faster than I was this time.

Congratulations to the people who finished their games, and good luck to those still working on it!

Cheers.
