Take it easy and keep things simple. Stick to what you know, and use software you feel confident enough with that you’ll be able to put something together quickly.

Woohooo!!

I’ve decided to use Java and Slick2D for my tools of choice. I’m still scared. Also anyone wondering i’m danlthemanl  in the IRC room.

IRC isn’t working right! Chat here!

So IRC is getting SLAMMED! But our live stream chat is open for anyone wanting to talk about ludum dare stuff! http://livestream.com/ludumdare

Progress, i guess….

So I’ve started my game! As you can see, I have boxes that jump. Its a start right?

Here’ s the description of my game, now that we know the theme is: Escape!

The Dwarf Thedomes, son of Gremolien is sentanced to death for treason in the kingdom of Agothon. At the execution, Thedo ESCAPES! at the last second and must make his escape and defeat the evil executioner.

I give up :(

Yeah its true, I chose too complex of an idea, and I don’t think i have the skills to code a FULL game. The farthest I got was jumping and moving. I failed you Ludum gods

Do not feel bad about it, you’ll keep improving each time you try. 😉

I had to remove lots of ideas from my project, or it would have taken ages. Maybe you can still do something with what you already have.

Was this your first one? I failed my first time, but it will get better eventually :)

I didn’t give up!

I didn’t make the deadline, but I’m still working on the game I started. Here’s a quick screenshot.
I’ll try to finish it before the Jam deadline, but I doubt it 😐

Starting my October Challenge!

Hello Ludum Dare! I failed you last time. But this is a new challenge, with a bigger time span and new motivation! I have no idea what the game will be, but it WILL be finished this time. And I will make $1. That’s final.

Also, I recommend listening to the Binding Of Isaac soundtrack as you code. It’s quite soothing.

Ludum Dare Warmup! *Progress Report!*

I’m making a game this weekend for the Warm up before Ludum Dare 22!
I’m using Unity and C# and photoshop for graphics. The game is kind of a mystery game. You have to escape your confined area by doing puzzles. Here’s my current progress and a few screenshots!

+ Movement with WASD and look using the arrow keys. DONE!
+ Picking up physical objects DONE!
+ Doors and opening them. DONE!
– Weight sensor activators (not done)
– Signs for communicating with the player (not done)
– Other puzzles (no idea yet)

Livestreaming Warmup Game

Hey dudes!
I forgot to say in my previous post that I’m live streaming my warmup game dev to gear up for next weekend! Watch me over at http://justin.tv/danlthemanl tonight and most of Sunday.

Temple of Boxtopia is done!

Play the game.
I finished my warmup game! It’s pretty simple. I mean really simple, but the thing that matters is I finished it. The Theme was trickster, and the last tiny puzzle you do tricks you a little, so I guess that counts. You can watch most of the development on justin.tv.

You can watch my development of Temple of Boxtopia on justin.tv:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Stay tooned to my justin.tv channel for the Ludum Dare Compo stream this Friday at 6pm Pre-coding and 7:00pm pst for the beginning of the codings!

Considering changing tools

I successful made a warm-up game using Unity3d, but I’ve recently discovered how terrible my 3D modeling skills are, and how much better my pixel art skills are. So I’m considering changing my tool from Unity3D to Construct. I will let you know once I’ve made the final decision.

Switchin’ Tools Mate!

I’ve decided I’m most likely making a 2D game this weekend, so I’ve come to the conclusion that I will use Java + Slick2D with Eclipse. I realize that that’s what I used last time, and failed measurably. I recently discovered about hot-code replace in eclipse, so that excites me. I just have to remember to keep things SUPER SIMPLE. I’m fairly confident with my Java and Slick2D skills so it should be pretty fun.

My suggestion if you’re switching some stuff out, make a little micro-LD, right now, a quick game with just a few features, to make sure you know what you’re doing.

Slick2D seems a popular choice for year, make sure you know how to host an applet, and ask for ftp from me of on IRC. We’ll be happy to help.

HAHA

Changing my mind so much lately. I think I’m going to decide which tools to use RIGHT when the clock its 0. Oh by the way, my stream will start at 5:00pm PST today at http://justin.tv/danlthemanl. PLEASE watch for some intense gamedev action and awesome music. HERE WE GO.

Current Progress

My game is coming along GREAT! A lot has been done in 4.5 hours. What I know so far is that It’s a side scrolling, 2D shooter.

  • Player Controls & Shooting
  • Map states
  • Tile/Bullet/Monster Systems
  • Tile Graphics
  • Player Graphics/Animation

Things to Add:

  • Interactable Items
  • Mob Graphics
  • Mob Spawner
  • Scrolling text

Lookin’ good!

LD23

I’m in! At least partly!

Accurate description of me at work.
Ludum dare time again! I’m excited to join, although I have many other plans this weekend, I’ll try to do it the best I can. The past two attempts at Ludum Dare, I failed. This time will be different, I’m sure of it. I’m much more skilled as a game developer, I’m currently working on a platformer I hope to finish by the end of the month. Just have to keep it simple, stupid!

Tools:

  • Java – I’m most familiar with it, and can crank out stuff pretty fast.
  • Slick2D – This framework helps me so much, gives me access to the 2D benefits OpenGL without it’s complicated stuff.
  • Photoshop CS5.5 – There’s free programs for doing pixel art, but I’m really comfortable with Photoshop, and plus I already own it.

I’ll be doing a time-lapse for what time I do work on it. No live-stream, that just distracts me.

So I guess I’M IN!

Tiny World! – 1.5 Hours in

I started a little bit late due to eating food and stuff. But I’ve made some progress! The idea is a top-down shotgun rpg. What does that mean? An dungeon crawler type thing, only you have a shotgun… I have tiles up, player moving/collision.

Here’s the first screenshot! (temporary programmer art)

And I’m streaming on Justin.tv! http://justin.tv/danlthemanl

6 hours in!

Phew, it feels like it’s only been an hour or two. but I’ve made a substantial amount of progress tonight! I have 2 new screenshots, I got the shotgun functioning and enemy AI and enemy deaths. Graphics could use some work, but I love it so far and I’m having lotsa fun!
