2nd time… maybe

I entered a barely-playable entry back in 2006 for the swarms theme (as a ~15 y.o might I add) and I have returned to make something a bit more decent… in theory (my intent is to enter, but that isn’t set in stone – depends on theme)

Tools:

  • C/C++
  • Irrlicht
  • GIMP on a Fujitsu Stylistic tablet PC (I can’t draw for sh*t but I can’t make tolerable graphics on this device just purely because it’s tablet + display combined)
  • No idea about audio. May ignore it

My barebones codebase is here. It’s pretty crummy – a lot of it was written ages ago and doesn’t really reflect my current style/ability so please excuse its suckiness. And although it sucks it does normally work pretty well.

1st day… not a great start, but a great concept

Sort of became a jam contestant rather than solo – went round to a friend’s house (Steve) to steal snacks + food and jammed on the concept. Got something pretty decent going idea-wise (sort of an Alan Wake-esque torchlight mechanic where the player has to locate/discover diseased cattle)

Progress is kind of crummy at the moment (started late) but the work-in-progress lasagne may fix that:

The mario ? box was a huge inspiration

Working environment

Pringles have so far been a staple food

Some screenshots at last

Or rather, one screenshot:

Yeah, not much at the moment. The yellow line is where the torchlight is being shone. The red line is a gunshot (when the player clicks). The edge of the circle you can see is is just a generic spherical obstacle.

Next: Cattle and their respective AI (yes, this is a game about shooting cows in pitch darkness)

Starting to look like a game….

Yep, I’m getting somewhere now. Dumped the use of real lighting in the wee hours yesterday and instead I opted for distance based hide/show. Less fancy but gives a far more satisfying effect (the white light is torch light by the way and follows the crosshair). The red block underneath the cow is a little spinning thing to attract your attention (especially since the cows are billboards – so this will alert you of the cow even if the cow is at an extreme angle/paper thin)

Also, note the above is placeholder (read: google image) art. I expect an art drop this afternoon from my ‘artist’ (we both jammed the idea but neither of us are artists).

15 hours could be tight, but if I can get shooting in within the next hour I think it could actually get done…

Playable and almost finished

Yep, it’s now playable complete with some great retro noises courtesy of DrPetter’s sfxr. Got a few powerups (and powerdowns) in, with only a few left to implement (and a few more textures to draw)

It has been an odd LD mainly because of the flip from “no chance of getting done” to “actually this is doable”. Marathon code session this afternoon certainly helped I suppose!
