Short PostMortem (2nd Ludum Dare / 1st Compo )

I was so unsure about the idea that we came up with that I had trouble later on just getting myself to put it in. JUST DO IT

This is my 2nd Ludum Dare and there are so many improvements.

What went right

  • Audio
    • I read a blog post on the Ludum Dare feed while making the game to do the audio sooner than later. Wow that helped so much! My character had footsteps! I had my own background music! When you interact with the goal it rewarded you with an audio feedback. This added more depth and ambiance to the game. Used LMMS everything you make with it is yours! :D
  • Levels
    • Levels were easy to make. I had created an XML importer from a tile editor called Tiled. This sped up level production to a completed level in 15 minutes near the end.

What went Wrong

  • Being afraid of the weird
    • Should have focused on the weird stuff to see if it would work or not work first. Again my ego got in the way that this project needed to be perfect! If the weird stuff got in first the weird stuff could have grown into a bigger part of the game.
  • Scope
    • Probably the most important things to consider next time. Now that I know my limits with a free weekend I can better estimate what all can get done. I think this is just done with experience.
  • Level Importer
    • I spent a good 5 hours programming an XML importer from Tiled. It wasn't even the first time making it. Instead of copying it I was typing out my code I had previously made for an older project purely out of ego that I needed to do everything by hand.

Conclusion

Super proud of this project, I have never made so much in so little time. The real challenge is making a "game" in such short time. Like a complete game. Beginning to end. With fun and all. I had made something but it wasn't a game.
