LD32

I’m in

This’ll be my second LD.  In the spirit of the keynote, I’ll be working with a new language and a new engine.  I fully expect to crash and burn.  But hopefully I’ll learn something on the way down.

Tools

  • Rust and Piston for code
  • vim will be my editor
  • Github will host my code
  • Photoshop for pixels
  • Bfxr for sound
  • Something for music maybe?

Some thoughts about themes:

  • Abandoned: Could be a game about being abandoned?  Or abandoning something maybe?  Or an abandoned place.  There’s a lot fun stuff you could do with this one.
  • Adapt to Survive: Kind of broad.  I guess you could adapt this theme to a lot of things.  I’m thinking a meta game about trying to come up with an idea to match the LD theme.
  • Among the Stars: Something space themed.  Or alien themed.  Or hydrogen themed.
  • An Unconventional Weapon: Finally, a game about fighting with tacos.
  • Companion: Look forward to 5000 escort quest games.
  • Creatures of the Night: Vampires? Werewolves?  2D Bloodborne?
  • Day and Night: A visual novel where you play as Sun-senpai and try to win the affections of Moon-chan.
  • Deeper and Deeper: That’s lewd.
  • Discovery: A game about Christopher Columbus conquering natives and being a gold-hungry dickhead.
  • Edge of the World: A game about debunking the myth that people in Columbus’ era thought the Earth was flat.
  • Four Elements: A better Legend of Korra game.
  • Grow: A game about plants.  Or eating a lot of cake and getting fat.
  • Harvest: A game about plants.  Or being the Grim Reaper.
  • Hidden World: A game about the Borrowers.
  • Hunted/Hunter: This could make for some pretty amazing atmosphere.
  • Indirect Control: A little too mechanics focused for me, but you could make some cool stuff with it.
  • It Spreads: You play a 19th century prostitute with gonorrhea.
  • Self-Destruction: Meh.
  • Take One, Leave the Rest: Too specific for my liking
  • You are the Power Source: Not a huge fan of this one either, same reason as above

Personally, I’m hoping for a theme that lends itself more to a metaphor or narrative than a gameplay mechanic after the last LD’s theme.

Think I finally settled on an idea

Only took me like 22 hours.

I kinda drew a blank for the theme.  Not that it’s hard to come up with something that fits, but more that I wanted an idea that didn’t boil down to ‘lawl fawny wepon’.  So fighting with a giant ham was out of the question.

Instead, I decided to interpret it a little differently: as a conventional weapon, but in an unconventional setting.  Which naturally lead me to Hipster Orc uses guns to take down the rich Elf 1%.

Here’s what I’ve got so far for the player character:

top-left: neutral, top-right: guns unholstered, bottom: really crappy walk cycle

I doubt this will have a fully realized game loop at this point, but we’ll see what I can pull off.

Smash the Elfiarchy

Got a little walk cycle and unholster animation going, now I gotta draw the elves.

smash

A couple of bad guys

Evil corporate elven wage-slaves.
