LD27

I’m late, I’m in – I’m clueless.

Thought I’ll do the etiquette-ish post before the first day ends.

Woke up at 3:30am (europe), saw the theme, smiled and went to sleep.

Woke up at 8-ish, bought coffee and haven’t come up with any good idea until around 5 pm.

Many ideas, none any good / doable in time. Only thing I know: Dont like the theme. (I guess i voted for it as well… doh!)

Still excited what the results will be. Afraid it won’t be a regular game though. Anyways: Hope this first LD experiance will be a fun one!

Will use:

Unity (Indie version)

UnityScript, maybe some C#

Free Assets found in Asset Store

maya2013 (Student Version)

Photoshop

And the most powerful weapon: the internetssssss!

Good Luck to everybody, hope you’re having a blast.

Bad place to wake up at

Compiling a test build, so I’ll use the time for posting some more nonsense!

notgood

I’m afraid I won’t make it in time but didn’t give up yet.

I still don’t have an idea where this “idea” goes but at least I’ve learnt some useful stuff until now.

Happy crunching everyone

In etcetc.

Could need some sleep. Nah, guess I’ll wait 15 more min to see the theme . So I’m in (?)

Usual blah:

Unity , student versions of Photoshop & Maya , Audacity, shitty laptop with microphone for awesome SFX and Bud Spencer Soundtracks for inspiration.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

LETS DO THIS, BRRRRRRRRRRRRRA!

Sloooow-ish

Oh boy. Very slow progression. After coding the whole day, I needed a change and wanted to do some assets.

Oh boy. I’m horrible at things I’m not used to, the output is -meh- and the invested time is gigantic.

BUT,the process is funny as hell:

Misfit Fighter

Guess which fighter was the role model for this . (Yeah i know, old fanboy I am…)

And if you don’t like the  character, there is never anything wrong with some Misfits content

You know you want it

And now go and finish your game. GOGOGOGOGOGO!

Deadline Pressure

I mean its cool to have a deadline, because it kicks your butt and everything, but usually I set myself under pressure to much. That results in an anxious feeling and unproductive behavior – with the cost of fun.

How do you guys deal with that? Cutting out ideas before time may run out? Having a neat timetable with calculated hours? Or maybe just stop whining and do stuff ? 😀

Anyway, i reeeeeeally hope I’ll finish this one in time, spend the whole night on these sprite sheets -.- . Never should have done this.

TwinsOrWhat?

It’s coming together!

It really is! Stoked on that. Ok , no sound yet, maybe some sort of scoring system, but hell yes, i think ill make it! Exciting.

For those of you who loved the good ol fireball duels in streetfighter. i think the longest one was like 10 min with a friend back then. This one is exactly that. Well, with beerbottles instead of fireballs.

bottlemania

HADOOOOUKEN! ;D

Happy crunching everyone

Introducing: The Misfight

Done. Had a very slow start,  rough night of sketching spritesheets and 1 Mil. programming issues to solve. And all because of something like this? Indeed. And it was a wild ride.

Ok , submitted 5 min late, but hey: DONE (sort of):

screeen1Type

Its only one screen, and you have only one special move (If you count throwing beer bottles as special) to defend yourself. And a keyboard for typing. Lets do this!

No mor bla about this one. Im psyched to play your stuff in the next days. I have seen some unbelievable good stuff so far.

G’d night,

.d

Post More Them

I kinda feel that a Ludum Dare isn’t completed until a final post about the game you created, so I wanted to take this opportunity to do this postmortem stuff at least once, (since I didn’t use IRC chat or anything else social-related while participating in the compo)

Idea:
2D fighting game, limited to one single attack, the Hadoken! (Or as someone in the comments mentioned: “Beerdouken!”, which would probably fit better)
As an Input of the “special Move” a combination of letters need to be typed in, which get more complicated over time.

Goal:
My first goal was finishing a game within the time. I find it very frustrating to not reach your goals until the deadline (at least the minimum implemented) so I tried to cut the mechanics down as much as possible, using only one screen and creating a fast paced  game.

Don’t really know how I got to the idea using beer bottles as fireballs… Probably because I was listening to The Misfits at this point and connected the whole background of the game to a punk-ish concert feeling, which fitted the goal of being “fast paced” quite good.

Cool:
Finished the game at a playable state. Thats it. No really, everything else had 1000 problems and I spend to much time on bullshit.

Shit:
– ideas come and go, but an idea worth spending the whole weekend on (with the boundaries of a given topic) is one of the hardest parts in my opinion. Spend half of the first day on it – and that sucks :/

– No difficulty settings. The word or the speed of there opponents fireballs (err… beer bottles) are handled by random numbers, which are always the same. bummer. That makes it pretty much impossible for not so fast keyboard cowboys to play.
This leads to the fact, that the game is not balanced at all or the mechanics aren’t further explored.

– Not enough sound. Especially the lack of sound effects or a visual feedback when making mistakes at typing results in confusion of the player.

– A link to an external library .txt file for the words used for input. Instead there is an hardcoded array of 20 words. Disgusting, I know.

– More content / levels / opponents . Ha, thats a good one. I spend the whole night from saturday to sunday creating one sprite sheet for a single character. Took me ages to get the Misfits skull on the shirt right:

idleattack

Lesson learned: don’t do things you never did before, when having a deadline this close. And yes the role model was the original SFII Ken sprite sheet 😉

– Massive problems with implementing the (very simple) game logic. Messed up some really easy to solve coding problems (not even coding : c# within unity). With less sleep comes less concentration. This consumed the most part of the valuable time. Phew.

– Guess the list could go on, but the more I write here, the more the game looks like a piece of #*§$% 😀

If you still are interested to play, here ya go.

The good thing: In less than a minute you saw everything there is 😉 But still, I wanted it like that. So in a very strange way – did I succeed? With a lot of flaws and bugs, yes. To be honest, that feels pretty good. And even if I see the other high polished, unbelievable detailed results of people, which are so much better than my buggy entry, it’s still pretty cool to get something done within the time.

And thats all about it right 😉 ?

Wish you all happy holidays, lets see what you come up with at LD29 – See you in 4 months!

.d

PS: By the way, anyone knows why my some uploaded gifs doesn’t seem to play properly? Known wordpress problem or anything?

Misfight – Post Compo Version

Made a post compo version. Just because. Fun and stuff 😉

Added some more sounds, a visual and sfx feedback if a typo was made, and some kind of 3 stages / difficult levels.

One of the funniest parts for me in developing interactive stuff are unpredictable outcomes of the coded behaviors. As there are often times I would like to kill the next human being entering my room (getting rid of bugs until one realizes, that a fresh start of the engine did the trick -.- ), there are moments like this that keep me working on things:

DuckDoKen!Duckdoken?

Bottle HelliPod Version with directions instead of text. Bottle hell shooter with wrong booleans O_o

With a few hours left to rate some more games I realized that I have missed out on some very outstanding ones, which I have to catch up with now. At this point thanks to the guys posting their personal favorite games lists :)

If you have the time, you can play the post compo and original version here

Fuck ratings, if you don’t have the time for that skip the star-o-mania with my entry –  I’d rather love to hear some honest opinions about that chaotic thingy I made.

Cheers,

.d
