Compo
I was inspired by my previous LD38 game Honey Home to make a mass-unit action game, especially because of the LD40 theme. Tamagotchi had crossed my mind while brainstorming, then I immediately rolled with the idea of controlling many needy Tamagotchi-like critters at once!

Ideas went straight from my head to the game, and I spent very little time writing things down (except for pet characteristics for balance purposes). A lot of things got scrapped: originally, walls hurt pets which made the game EXTREMELY chaotic. Also, I originally thought to let the player buy pets, but I instead went with spawning, to keep the player on their toes and avoid developing strategies to exploit some pet combinations.
I was focused on design and code, so spend no time on music (unfortunately) and very little on graphics. Given the graphics time restraint, I went with a minimalist Undertale inspired look that was black and white with red + green accents. I focused on making sure the game was arcade-like and had scoring that people could use to compare with other players! I think that aspect made my LD34 entry really entertaining. I also made sure it was playable on web for accessibility, which is something that greatly helped my earlier LD entries.
By the end of Sunday, the main gameplay was complete and has remained untouched! I spent an evening after the Compo ended to add a results screen and make the game web-compatible. I was unavailable until Wednesday, which is when I finally posted the game for playing.
Hope you enjoy Critter Sitter as much as I enjoyed working on it!
