LD41: Day One!

Hey LDjammers! Welcome to our first LD jam game as a complete 5x Train team! Although we've all done plenty of LDs in other combinations, this is our first adventure on the 5x Train together.

The passengers of our train are: - @peachtreeoath (the Conductor and code) - @segfault (code) - @zetafactor (code) - @doubledragonbimmy (code) - @watashi (art) - @evedoll (art) - @chro (design) - @wchaney (music) - @emiko (design and keeping you awesome folks on the journey with us!)

We started promptly at 6pm with a brainstorm session with the whole team. We created one document to all work off of where we listed all the genres we could think of to pull ideas from. Using that, we all listed possible incompatible combinations that sounded fun and interesting. Each person voted on their favorite combination and we used that list to narrow things down to our final choice: a typing deck builder!

Here's our rough design: - We drew lots of design inspiration from Dominion for the deck builder part of the game - The player and their computer-controller opponent has a hand of cards they can play from, a deck to draw from and a discard pile - There is a community pool of cards on the left of the playing field - Both sides can type card names to add them to their discard pile - Once your deck depletes, your discard pile (including all the new cards you add!) will shuffle and become your new deck to draw from - The game is built on single player boss campaigns similar to Hearthstone raids - You type card names to play them from your hand to the field -The combat will run on active time cycles: - Creatures will attack - Spell length counters will go down - Draw one card - A core principle is that each mechanic will be introduced via the boss encounters--only a basic tutorial should be required to get started!

Here is a quick mock-up that @watashi put together: Day 1 - Matt's Mockup.JPG

But until we get awesome actual art... here is our sweet programmer art: Day 1.JPG

We are super excited to get all of our great ideas going! I hope you enjoyed our first quick update. If you're interested in updates throughout the day, follow us on Twitter! 5xTrain

Good luck everyone!!!

LD41: Day 2!

A long night of coding + an even longer day of coding = ... this I guess. Day 2 - Calvin Eating Challenge short optimized.gif

But aside from silly stream shenanigans, we got a ton of work done! It's an especially good feeling when you start the day with a lot of placeholder art and no real working mechanics and end the day with some real art (thanks to the amazing @evedoll!) coming in and you can actually play the game (with shoutouts to our incredible code team!)! On top of that, fidget spinner keyboards were played with, brisket was eaten too fast and we all had a really fun time hanging out on stream. We couldn't have asked for a better Day 2!

Here is where we ended on Day 1: Day 1.JPG

Here is where we ended up on Day 2: Day 2 - Placeholder Cards.gif

There's real art from @evedoll! Based on the core code that @zetafactor has been building, there's working typing mechanics from @doubledragonbimmy! There's actual cards with real stats on them from @segfault! WE HAVE A GAME! And all along the way, @peachtreeoath has been pushing those pieces into the UI wireframe that @watashi has been working on tirelessly! That leaves @chro to design all of the core concepts and battles that this team will bring to life!

Of course there is plenty to do today still but it's really exciting to see everything come together so quickly and we all had a great time doing it.

The UI wireframe has also gotten really amazing really fast. Here's where @watashi left off yesterday at the end of Day 1: Day 1 - Matt's Mockup.JPG

This is what the wireframe looked like at the end of Day 2: Day 2 - Matt's Mockup Update 2.JPG

We are super, super excited to see where Day 3 takes us! It's well underway for us but I wanted to make sure to capture the leaps and bounds that we took yesterday! Again, if you're interested in updates through the day, follow us on Twitter! 5xTrain

Good luck in the home stretch, everyone!!!
