When we brainstormed the "deeper and deeper" theme as some point I remembered that there is the concept of reverse skyscrapers biuld into the group. We researched this for a bit and found this image of a concept from japan called depthscraper:

The idea was that we create some sort of 3D puzzle game around this concept, where you need to build your depthscaper deeper and deeper.

So we opened up Blender and Unity and after some hours we had something like this

We kind of liked it but they were still some issues and visually we were not yet where we wanted to be. And it was time to actually test our concept. However we're not experienced with 3D so we felt like it would be better to test our game mechanic by using something that would be more familiar to us as web developers: React.

Our prototype looked something like this and actually felt pretty fun. We kind of started to like the aestetic and realized that probably it would not be enough time to actually implement this in Unity.

So we decided to just work on the fun more, balance it more and make everything a bit more polished and juicy. We also added a highscore, which was fairly easy to do with firebase (we might have had a bug that ended up with us downloading 60GB of data while developing, but dont tell anyone haha)

The result is what we have now:

The feeling is pretty much like a nice addicting idle game. So we are now thinking of turning it into a mobile game :). If you want to get updates about is sign up here.

We were running out of the free usage for the database we used for highscores. 10 GB 🙈 Migrated all the highscore entries to a new database and made the highscore fetching slightly more efficient. Oops.

I think just a little bit of polish can go a long way, don't you think? We focused a lot on playtesting and fun this time but in the last few hours we still added some animations and made the colors look nicer. See and try for yourself 🙌

We didn't reach our goal of getting a score of 4 this time, but we had so much fun and are really glad for all the feedback we received for our game depthscraper.

In our game you're a Home Office Hero with a controlling boss who needs you to check in with him every 10 seconds. However you also need to get your chores done!

Here's some gifs about the evolution of the game over time including what we're working on for after the jam.

Early version

In the beginning the camera was fixed and the room a bit smaller. This was a bit limiting to the game play, so we expanded the room and had the camera follow the player.

Jam version

For the published version we also had a task system and as you can see a new model for the player.

Post-Jam Status

We're currently having fun with working on a post-jam version with more things to do and a complete overhaul of all the 3D objects.
