LD24

First LD!

Hiya guys!

It is high time to present myself, I guess…

So, it’s my first LD, first post!

Currently I’m working on a sci-fi game. I won’t describe much because it is far from its final form (I hope I’ll deal with it).

The main hero is a strange, unstable mass from Mars. It evolves very quickly, that’s why people are curious about it.

Moreover, it seems it can be somehow controllable by human race.

Obviously, they (we?) soon arrange special fights (like Pokemon fights) to determine who is the great mass dominator!

First screen :)

As you can see, the game doesn’t look special so far (still a lot to do).

It’s (going to be) a simple strategy-puzzle game, where player will have to beat computer (hmm, rather to get as many points as possible, I don’t belive I create competitive AI).

I’m using old flash + audacity + sfxr.

Think I’ll also need the help of GIMP and… Guitar Pro :)

As it is my first entry, I won’t cry if I don’t finish it before Monday! Though I won’t give up easily :)

Ok, back to work. See ya soon!

End of the day!

Whoa! I’m done for today!

256 hand-made frames of green something! Now I only need to duplicate it in red  and I can start making backgrounds :)

It’s a strange feeling but I feel like I’m getting closer to the end!

Ok! I’m out of here for a couple of hours! Have a nice day!

Lovely alien

Title screen!

Yeah! I have a name!

MASS

Maybe a bit annoying one but who cares. I also have welcome screen (that’s right, I can’t art). Good old Flash crashed so I decided to make a break and write a post.

It will be hard to finish before end, still need some things to make this game playable but I’m afraid it won’t be :(

Main menu!

Finished!

Just in time!

Of course, I didn’t manage to make it playable but I was close, really 😀

I am satisfied with my experiance. I know what I did wrong and what I did right. I know the direction.

Now, with all of it in my mind, I’m looking forward  to the next LD. I have good feelings about it!

Thanks for this weekend and goodnight!

LD25

I’m in!

Hey, i’m in!

This time my aim is to make something playable :)

The tools I’ll be using depends on the idea, but I will probably limit myself to: Unity or LÖVE+Zoetrope+AnAL or Flash MX or Java/JS with Cocos2D.

I could also use Box2D. Hope that I listed all of the possibilities.

My other favourite tools: GIMP, Blender, Inkscape, ArtRage, GuitarPro, Anvil Studio, sfxr, Tiled, GraphicsGale.

And a photo (nothing special yet, but the desk will probably get populated soon :) ):

Oh, and, in the end, I didn’t manage to pump my LD24 project. It got too messy ㅠ_ㅠ

First screenie!

Ok, this one was supposed to be more realistic than the other one, but I’m too ambitious to be careful :)

Anyway, I’m playing with Box2D, started about 6 hours ago in Flash but then I noticed it would be much easier using LÖVE with AnAL.

I have music (!), some sprites and I’m currently working on the gameplay.

Oh, and the game: You are a villain (surprise!), planning on killing the hero in many interesting ways. Of course, it would be too violent on Christmas (for us, not for our villain), so we only play on the blackboard.

First actual screenie!

Tools I’m using: LÖVE, GIMP, GraphicsGale, Guitar Pro, Audacity

A title! Yay!

Hey, this is my second update. Not that I didn’t want to write posts, I just didn’t have anything to show yet.

But this has changed (a bit). I proudly presents… title screen! With… the name of my game! (yay, at last!)

Moreover, I have a goat! 😀

Of course, game will be available in an hour :)

Love the title screen. Very clever :)

Summary

It’s this beatiful time when I should list my achievements and mistakes :)

So… overall I’m proud of my new child. Being evil is more fun that I thought. I got a decent number of ideas and stories.

What about idea I chose? Hmm, it was a bit awesomer (more awesome?) while in planning phase, thought I personally can get joy from it (I’ve done level 2 – the new, bug free one –  in 3 different ways, can You? :) ). The worst thing is that I ran out of time. Again. I couldn’t focus on important things because of small details. Again. I do make the same mistakes all and all again, despite experience. What a shame! Well, third time’s a charm, let’s hope :)

But still: I learned Box2d, made a decent sprite and level managers, made my first bitmap font and I have my first love2d game :) I really love it and i will definitely make some more stuff in Lua. So… I’m also pretty proud of things I achieved :)

Oh, and the post-compo version is coming! For real now! See You ingame! Bon appetit and till the next time!

Summary

Wow~! #21 in “Innovations”! I’m in Top Scores! Totally didn’t expect that! Was dreaming about top 200 in any category, and I have also reach #188 in “Graphics”, wow!

Thank You guys for playing my game and voting, despite of how uncompleted it was. Now I feel really obliged to finish post-compo version (which is going to be very freaked out :) ). The bad news is that it probably won’t take place until February. I’m really jaded with school stuff right now :(

See You during LD25, with the aim to deploy a completed game this time! Also congratulation on every single game on this LD! It was fun to play Your games!

LD26

I’m in!

I’m totally in!

This time I’m aiming at making the game playable. This means I promised myself not to do any unnecessary assets before I don’t have a fun prototype. I’ve made this mistake twice and I hope I’ve finally learnt something :)

Anyway, I’ll be experimenting with Ubuntu. I’m pretty sure that I’ll choose:

Engine: Love2d

Tools: Sublime Text, gimp, inkscape, blender, sfxr, Audacity, TuxGuitar/any other simple music program

If the theme fits, I can do something in Unity or Atanua :)

I also have my fingers crossed for all You, guys! Have fun!

First day showoff

Okay, as usual, my project is a bit tricky ;)

This time I am making a REAL FANTASY ROLEPLAY WITHIN 12 PIXELS!

Yeah, that’s right! In the HD era where only megapixel counts, I want to show that it is fairly possible to put fully functional game in 4x3px display :)

So far, after 1st day I have 2 types of enemies and levelling system with 4 main attributes. Now I’ll sit down to write some story :)

Oh, and a manual will probably be useful (at last! :) )

game

A thrilling fight with a poison shooting wasp!

Finished!

Okay guys, I’ve managed to finish before LD48 deadline. I post it that late because I had some problems with compressing timelapse video.

That is my third Ludum Dare in a row and, I think, progress is noticeable. Which please me a lot.

But still, I have a lot to learn – I’ve fallen again in that pifall with shortening my game just before deadline. I had prepared much more things than I was able to implement. Again. But this time I’ve managed to provide a PLAYABLE version. That’s something!

What is also great is that my code is neat. I really like it: it is easy to understand, clean and flexible. I’m proud of it!

The other thing is that, besides code, there’s nothing more in the game – because of concept, there is literally no graphics. And no music either as I was afraid to play with it on Ubuntu (I’m still not familliar with this system).

But, after all, I made a complete, working cRPG with character development, fighting, dialogues, history and its universe, closed in 4×3 pixels. Beat that! 😀

Golden Frogs 2013 Awards

Hello again,

I’m in but it doesn’t matter for a while because I have an announcement.

I would like to introduce a Golden Frog award for the extraordinary theme suggestions. As you know, there are many different kinds of themes: some are good, some are bad, many of them are slaughtered. I would like to present those, which excel in something, which are good but also those which are bad and deserve to die. I think that it is somehow better than presenting my pure pluses/minuses. Also I’m glad that suggestions were made anonymously so I don’t need to fund the gold (I’ll keep them for myself, thank you, sponsors).

May the ceremony begin.

Most surprising (but also important) award goes to “You are the Companion”.

Almost every game teaches us that we either are in the centre of attention or we simply doing something bad. But there are often a lot of back-story characters who are willing to help. Do you ever think about how they feel when you take the whole pride from victory or shout at their “stupid” AI. The companion’s rights is an open topic and I’m glad that we matured to start talking about it.

Most thought-provoking award goes to “Backwards”.

Think for a minute about a FPS, RTS, RPG or even a platform game played backwards and you have tons of fresh game ideas. This theme is packed with unexploited content. The only reason I won’t vote for that theme is because I won’t be able to play those game for whole 3 weeks ;)

Most difficult award goes to “You play both sides”.

I like that one. It’s extremely challenging. In fact I think that deploying a game which are fun even if you play both (for me it means all of) sides in 2 days is almost impossible. For instance, think about chess where you have to play black and white at once: booooring. Or 1P Quake Arena: boooring. A small game modification is needed. It is easier to modify a coop game, but, as long as I am concerned, I would go for powerful hardcore, for creating a real competitive game where you are your own true opponent!

Most annoying award goes to “Parallel worlds”.

Each time I was like “Oooh, it sure can win”. But this time I vote against. Why? Dunno, maybe because I prefer fresh ideas :P

Great but I saw it before award goes to “Colours”.

In general, “Colours” is a decent theme. It is wide, deep, interesting and all. The thing is: it is being exploited with literally every LD. I remember LD about evolution: every fifth entry was about colours/colouring; LD about villains: you are bad, you are white-and-black, hero is colourful – that scheme I saw also few times; LD about minimalism: well, you know :)

NO award goes to “Hacking”.

For me this one isn’t even a theme. It should be slaughtered, and not once but Sean-Bean-kind-of-slaughter times. Hacking in movies and games are overrated, we are totally fed up with it and, essentially, no matter how hard you try, your game  cannot be more thematic than “Hacker Evolution” or “Uplink”.

I don’t want to even write about it award goes to “Glitch”.

Runner-up awards goes to “10 seconds”, “Hunted”, “Contrast”, “Time”.

They are suggestions which almost won Golden Frog 2013 Grand-Prix. I will be glad if any of them is chosen.

And, ladies and gentlemen, it is the time to announce the big winner of our first annual Golden Frog Grand-Prix winner.

The editor’s choice award goes to “Space”.

I would ask the author to make a speech but since he is anonymous I will write just few words:

The first thing in my mind when I saw “Space” was a game from “The Next Game Boss” show where you had to punch people to make you some space in the crowd. I did some research and it was called “Cheap shot”. Space may also mean the space where we live or, according to “The Longest Journey” serie, space beyond that one where we live. They can interact with each other etc. Also “The Settlers” and “Liquid War” are good exemplars of game where space is of prime importance. This theme is still fresh, open, wide and fun. The one and only ultimate Golden Frog 2013 winner.

From this place I would like to congratulate all the winners and participants of Golden Frogs 2013 awards. See you all next year.

I’m in

As I mentioned before, I’m in! Fourth time in a row :) And I hope I’ll keep going!

My environment is, of course, Love2D and all its libraries on its wiki. For sure, I’ll use my favourite AnAL and lovedebug.lua for development. Also I would like to make myself the right of using libraries written by me during past compos 😉 It’s very unlikely though as I’m, as usual, working on a completely different kind of game.

The game itself is about a one-man special US forces, like Sam Fisher or Snake (hmm, Snake is kind of more complex, just stay with Sam Fisher :) ). The gameplay will be more common, there’ll be a bit of Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, Uberleben, even Bit.trip Runner. The agent is on his mission in N Korea and he is a bit, well, short on time. I won’t spoil more. The game will be short (longer than 10 seconds though 😉 ), intense and full of explosions! And, as usual, I’m working on a nice twist! Frogmaster approves!

First screenie

2,5 hours of work – time for the first screenie.

It’s a scene when my commando is falling from the sky – a must-be scene for every spy game :)

screen

Now that’s what I call “a bullet hell”

Next screen, woohoo!

Wow, 7 hours and I have my 2nd level almost scripted. Now to code epilogue and I can already start making graphics! Oh, and I apologize but I won’t deliver timelapse this time. Tool has crashed :(

screen2

Wow, it’s a lot… erm… rectangles!

2nd day!

Argh, so many time today spent on doing nothing! It’s more than 3/4 of compo and I’m still short on assets!

I’m getting to make music now! Have about an hour for that… Maybe start from Mission Impossible tune :)

screen3

That’s mostly how falling into North Korea’s gonna look like!

As usual… after a perfect Saturday, Sunday destroyed whole project :( I lost 4 hours because of music (my first experience with trackers, failure…), in the end I decided I’ll end up without one. It’s already 9 PM and I have to make hero’s animations and level changing system :(

screen4

I won’t have time to fix this menu :P

But, at least, my game earned a name: SF-1 😀 (from Special Force – 1, and no, not from the gene)

Keep it up! :)

Music was hard for me too, since it was my first time doing Game Music (thogh i do some audio-engineering from time to time).

LD28

I’m in!

Well, I’m starting extremely late this time but I decided to give it a try.

It’ll be more like 12h compo for me though.

(tomorrow I need to get back to making game professionally – that’s right! thanks to LD I got my dream job and it is my first compo I’m entering as a Game Programmer 😀 )

I’ll use Game Maker or Love2d environment (as I’m out of time).

Also, as usual, I’ll bring my favourite set of tools, that is sfxr, Notepad++ (or ST) Guitar Pro and Gimp.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me :)

And also good luck to everyone participating!

First screenie

So, after 8 hours I have the concept and basic gameplay.

The idea is that you have 1 button to operate the whole starship (!). But it obviously isn’t a simulator, more like simplified sidescroller.

I still need graphics, menus, some level design etc. The game will be much simpler than my other ones but I think I can finish it :)

See you soon!

Oops, seems like someone’s not luck today!
