Reality breakdown?

Hello, Fryer here… First time in Ludum Dare even! I’ve been coding stuff since I was a kid, time to put some of those skills to use.

I heard Ludum Dare was coming up, so I listened to some music to give me inspiration. Owl City reminded me of Jacek Yerka with their album cover, so I decided I wanted to make something inspired by his paintings. Turns out… Theme fits perfectly with that idea! 😛

So to take the theme for a bit of a spin I’m going to do stuff a bit in reverse. You’ll start out with everything looking quite normal, then as you get into the game you find yourself playing in a world where everything just seems to be out of place; though, still offering a great challenge. No more spoilers on that until later.

I’m not the greatest artist around, so forgive me if everything doesn’t look really cool when the game is done.

Tools I’ll be using:

  • Programming language: C++
  • Libraries: SFML 2.0
  • Sound design & music: FL Studio
  • Artwork: Paint.NET

That’s all for now. More updates when things start falling in place… !

Update 0x01 – Empty box

I’ve started coding on the game. What I have now is basically just the setup: Empty window, working code base to continue on.

Once the menu is done there will be another, more exciting, update… Probably with screenshots.

For now I’ll be away for a while. Not the best timing to make games, since there’s other stuff that needs to be done.

Ludum Dare 46

Starting now

I experimented a bit with which libraries to use yesterday before the theme was announced, and then got some sleep.

I'll be making an auto scrolling + auto walk platformer where you must build the level in real time for the character to "keep it alive".

Language and libraries I'll be using:

Ludum Dare 47

Second time doing this, let's go!

My first experience participating in Ludum Dare was fun, so I'm back. "Stuck in a loop" didn't sound interesting at first, but then I got a funny idea, so I'm in!

Last time I didn't use a game engine, which was fun because of the added difficulty. This time I want to try making something with more gameplay, so here's my new toolset: - Engine: Godot - Art: Paint.net - Audio: Audacity

I'll post more updates when I have stuff to show.

Good luck to everyone else, I'll be looking forward to playing all the games!

Spinning in space

This is the player, panicking as they're drifting through empty space. If only there was something to grab on to... panic.gif

Opposing forces

If you're stuck in orbit, just throw some space rocks! throw.gif

Swimming among the stars

I'm back at it after some sleep, now with jumps, but nothing to jump on except empty space. swim.gif

Filling out the space

I added some solid asteroids. Space doesn't feel so empty anymore. jump.gif

Repairing satellites

I added a broken satellite. It's dangerous, but you can "fix" that by detaching its solar panels. ^^ sat.gif

That's a big backpack!

I don't know how a solar panel fits in there, maybe it folds? inv2.gif

Space is dangerous...

... so I added 2 death screens! zap.gif

Now I just need a win condition and I'll have something slightly playable. Hopefully I'll have time to add some polish too.

Space station architecture

I designed some parts for a modular space station and built this: station.png

Soon to be the drifting astronaut's lost home.

It is done!

I've submitted my game "Ejected" for the Compo! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/ejected

The last 24 hours have been a stressful grind of prioritizing and scope cutting, but I think I managed to put out something acceptable in the end.

The one thing I wished I had more time for was audio. I didn't expect to have time for any audio at all, but I managed to squeeze in at least some spooky space ambience in the final hour.

Playing and rating will have to wait until tomorrow, all I want to do right now is sleep.
