6hr-ish Update

When I first saw the theme, I have to admit I was a bit worried. I noticed the theme previously during the voting, and quietly thought to myself “I hope that doesn’t come out”, but here we are.

Its been about 5-6hrs since the theme has been announced, and I’m quite happy with my progress. I’ve managed to think of a pretty cool concept (to me anyway) for the narrative, and I’m about done with half the mechanics of the game, though I’ll need a lot of time to polish and what not.

Judging by the few peeks I’ve had at the page, many people have spectacular stuff planned or prepared, so I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s submission.

Press on!

Submitted Happily Forever After!

WOW. I can’t believe it’s done. This is the first LD I’ve participated in, the first game that I’ve finished from start to end within 48 hours, and my first game I’ve published.. anywhere. It was great fun, though I’m pretty dang tired and my coding fingers need a break. Will be writing a post-mortem and voting soon.

Happily Ever After – Post Mortem

Introduction
Hello! I’m GameRespect. Currently a student, and this was my first LD attempt.
This is my first post-mortem.

Concept/Story
The theme “You are the Villain” caught me off-guard, so I spend about 30 minutes after the announcement of the theme to come up with an interesting idea I’d like to explore about it. (Being a literature student, ) I thought of using the standard “Hero saves the Girl from the Villain” model and flip it on its head, so that we see what it may be like after, for the villain, and through that see how you were the villain even when you were playing the “hero”. Since I’m getting lost myself, thats all I’m going to say about the concept.

Graphics

Like many other people, I chose to do a very simple and clean aesthetic. I don’t really have much experience working with vector graphics/animation, so I did what I could and moved on. I’m actually  pretty happy with how it turned out, despite everyone being a giant ‘i’.

Sound
Most of the sound effects and all of the music were made by myself, which is quite surprising for me since I’ve never written or recorded any music for anything before, though I have done simple sound effects for a previous game. If the music sounds random and , that’s because I  basically sat at the keyboard and played whatever came into my mind, and after about 3 hours of that, I had 3 simple songs that I was satisfied with.

Gameplay
or the lack thereof.. This is the aspect that I’m most upset with. Within the time constraint and bad planning on my part, this ended up being more like an interactive video than a real “game”. I wanted to add a whole slew of interesting and fun levels after you switch characters, but opted for one extremely simple one in favour of spending more time making the game look and feel right.

Overall
What can I say? I finished a game in 48 hours. It was extremely fun, and very useful. I’ve found myself a community of awesome and kind people, and I’m sure this won’t be the last you’ll see of me.

My mistakesNote to self

  • put more thought and time into the gameplay! don’t do another interactive video!
  • get all the files ready earlier than 5 minutes before the deadline
  • chill more COFFEH beforehand!
  • add goats next time

I’m in :D

This will be my 2nd Ludum Dare and 3rd Game Jam, and I am psyched for it!!

This will be my first (and 2nd last, hopefully) doing it during my Junior College period, so I hope that I can get all my tutorials and revision done before the theme is announced.

Tools of trade:
Flash CS6
Photoshop CS6 + Wacom Intuos 4
Garageband + Guitar / Keyboard / Bass
Lots and lots of COFFEH

Hopefully I apply what I learnt during the last 2 jams.

Good luck to all the first time Jammers!

HAPPY JAMMING

Pushed out a simple project :)

So, i managed to code an extremely, EXTREMELY simple game over the weekend.
I thought I would have enough time throughout the 48 hours, but because of school and other commitments, I ended up only having a few hours on Sunday night.
Since I had classes and lectures in the morning, pulling an all-nighter was sadly impossible. So I did this lil’ fella up with the little time I had. :)

Happy jamming to the jam-jammers! And lets have a good voting! :)

First off, should have thought of a more original title >< Though I kinda like the name considering how my game incorporates the theme(maybe should have called it Only1).

Secondly, I am (for the first time personally) submitting the game early. I feel alittle drained already (with about an hour left till the end of the 48 hours) so I’m calling it off for now.

Thirdly, I really like the game that I made. It doesnt really fit into what I originally envisioned it to be but i think it turned out pretty damn swell. I got most of the enemy logic up in an hour or less, and I used some tricks that I learnt during GGJ and previous LDs :) However, I think I still need to study and practice writing music. Also, did not add sounds fx for this game (though it would be awesome!).

Note to self:
Find out better way to handle music/sounds
Find out better way to handle keystrokes/mouse actions
Stock up on more coffeh (had none)
