Ludum Dare 48

Drill Sergeant - Recap and next steps

This was my first Ludum Dare and I am must say this was an amazing experience!

From the very start of believing I'll never find an idea that matches the theme, to slowly learning how to make platformer-type controls satisfying to panickily trying to figuring out how to produce spider noises, and to finally submitting my final game "Drill Sergeant" late Sunday night completely exhausted.

While a lot of things got dropped off the feature list in the end, I am still very happy on where the game ended up.

And it's such a nice step change from working on a complex project for long periods of time without an end in sight to getting something done in such a short timeframe.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback thus far, but keen to get more of your thoughts. If you have a minute to spare, please try it out here

But now that it's all done and dusted, I just can't stop thinking about all the features that didn't make it. So I've started working on a Drill Sergeant Extended Edition. The first step was to add some proper lighting to make the game feel a bit more scary, but there are a lot more things I am planning to add soon, including: - More enemy variety, with ranged enemies and flyers - More weapons, such as shotguns and sniper rifles - A shop to buy weapons and upgrades - Stationary turrets the player can place - Better looking UI - More, and better sound effects - And lastly, the most requested piece, some music

Thanks very much for reading, and looking forward to seeing you at LD49!

Drill Sergeant - Continued work on extended edition

Hey guys,

it's me again. In the last few weeks, I've continued to work on improving and polishing my Ludum Dare submission, Drill Sergeant (which you can find here in case you have a minute to spare to rate and review :) ).

Here are the things I've implemented so far: - Lighting - More weapons & ammo mechanics - More and better particle effects - A proper UI - An in-game tutorial (a much requested feature)

See below two before and after screenshots - imo the difference in look and feel is already quite drastic!

Current version: DrillSergeant ScreenshotemEE2/em0.25.png

But there are still a lot of things that I am aiming to do: - More and better sounds - Music - A shop system - More enemy types - Better difficulty curve

I'm aiming to spend maybe another 2 months or so to create a proper version of the game - which should be a great learning experience to cover all the bits that I have previously avoided (yes, music, I am looking at you!)

Thanks for reading - wishing you a splendid rest of your weekend!

Best, GoldOne
