Frank the Dinosaur

Here’s my submission.  This is my first compo, but I think you’ll like this.  I have included WinXP and Debian binaries in the zip:
http://pubpages.unh.edu/~jmb97/SDL/Dino.zip

I had to forget about sound to get it in on time.

Please leave descriptive comments of your reactions and impressions!

Hmm… It’s not finding the pictures when I use Wine. That would be a problem. I’ll post a new build when I get back to Windows.

i get the same results as increpare
09. Feb 2009 · 09:29 UTC
Of course, it was a .dll problem… Grr… Well, try the download again, please!

worked fine for me, a fun little one this 😀

i laughed many times at various points playing this. great humor. like the quick intro .. and surprise title change! The dino ‘suit’ is too damn cute as well as the little comments like ‘ frank loves his job’ was great.

Thanks! If you want to see the intro again, you can delete the ‘ranOnce’ file that appears in the directory.

OH – I guess it was a velociraptor.. :)

Ha, Funny little game. Appartently shooting dinosaurs with a tranquilizer dart gun is all that it took to get my wife to play video games. If only I knew sooner…

At your service…

Let’s see what happens!!

My camera is in the shop, and the webcam isn’t working right now…  Maybe I’ll get some shots up later.

I am a big fan of polished games, so I’m tossing in my work-in-progress GUI lib:
http://code.bluedinosaurs.com/SDL/GRO_Gui.tar.gz

Other libs:
SDL, SDL_image, SDL_mixer, SDL_ttf
Box2d

And these can be found on code.bluedinosaurs.com:
Sprig
NFont
GoodIO
SDL_ColorDef

Of course, sfxr and the GIMP will be my tools.

Good luck, everyone!

I’m happy

Now it’s time for bed…

Salve, Ludum Dare!

I just woke up, so it’s time to design!
My light breakfast:

And part of my workspace:

It’s true:  Real men like Pokemon.  😛

Already, I have my first error…  Has anyone else seen this?!

g++ -Wall -c Advancing.cpp
Advancing.cpp:28: error: unexpected Doom at end of file

Oh god -_-

I’ve an idea

My wife has finally approved, so I’m going with it:

Of course, the slugs will use water guns instead of swords…  but swords are so cool!

is that a slug attacking a block of tofu?

Slugs v Salt

Edit: My comments to ratings are attached to this post.

Here it is,

http://code.bluedinosaurs.com/SDL/SlugvSalt.zip

Windows binaries included

You command a squad of slugs against the sinister cubes…
‘wasd’ and ‘g’ to fire, ‘h’ to jump for player 1.
Arrow keys, ‘m’ to jump, and comma to fire for player 2.

Well, it is hard… I’ll put up a new version on my website that deals with that in a couple of days. The biggest ‘feature’ that adds to the difficulty is that your shots can hit dead enemies. Once I removed that, my friendly slugs easily licked that salt.

I think the LD torrent was made before I fixed the crashing bug (which was just a missing ‘continue’ loop logic). I recommend the download link in the blog entry.

In Like a Lion

I’ll be LD-ing as long as my wife and kids will let me and I’ll be tacking together my usual assortment if I need them:

3rd party libs:
SDL, SDL_image, SDL_ttf, SDL_mixer
OpenGL
Box2d

My libs:
SprigGRO_guiNFont, JEL-events, SDL_ColorDef, StickyInput, goodIO, MixBox
OpenGL junk

Tools:
sfxr
the GIMP

Best of luck to everyone!

I like your setup. Quite a large base of good code for you to build on. Look forward to seeing what you can do with it.

Something with a Knight

Well, I have an idea. Cave dragons will be shaking at the sight of this knight:

knight1

Okay, he’s not too knighty yet… And I don’t have a title. There’s collision detection and lighting though!

Stay tuned for some sweet knight action to come!

More Knight stuff

Here it is so far…  I hope I can turn it into something solid, but the knight looks like a pansy.  I might have to redraw that.

Declaration of Discontent

Alas, finals + LD = sadness.  How many more times will real life interfere with LD?  Well, that strongly depends on how I do on my final on Tuesday.

So, with regard to not competing, the tools I will be using:
#2 Pencil
Several Sheets o’ Papers
Enormous Brain in my Head

Oh, what a drag. ;_;
Cheer me up and let some totally awful theme win, like “Rain” or something. 😉

LD 16… B.C.

This was engraved above an ancient game of tic-tac-toe.

You are challenged to continue the tradition!

Bath Time!

bath1

Okay, so I didn’t update you yet, but I have been taking pictures along the way.  This game is going to be done completely with photos, instead of the usual.  It’s pretty fun doing this so far.  ^ Here you can see how dirty our bath tub is…  This is with a single controllable sprite.

2010-04-24-152632_800x600_scrot

^ Here’s when I got some AI for the computer player and too many cannon balls.

2010-04-24-172154_800x600_scrot

^ Here’s the foreground effect in place (and some ugly water – which might just stay…).

Now, the game?  Plod around and shoot stuff with your cannon, so far.  I have a few directions I can take it, but I haven’t settled yet.  Treasure collection?  Cleaning toys?  Environment puzzles?  Save the captured toys?  One of those, surely.

Haha! That’s a great twist on the theme. Bathtub. 😀

Treasure Tub!!

Well, it’s over.  That was great!  This game turned out to be fun, though a bit chaotic.  Check it out!

I actually dreamt I added double rainbows to Minecraft a couple of nights ago. I don’t know what that means.

Ludum Dare … SO INTENSE!!!

I’ll be in

I haven’t had the chance to formalize my entry, so here we go!

I’ll probably be using my usual basecode of C++ and SDL with many little libraries.  They can be found at my website:
http://code.bluedinosaurs.com

So…  I don’t have a game design yet.  Heck, it was my theme suggestion!  I should’ve been ready. :)

Your theme suggestion won!? Awesome! 😀 It’s a great and flexible theme.

New England Meetup and Some updates

I have a video of the New England LD Meetup, but I’m having uploading problems.  For now, I’ll just post a couple of images of my game’s progress.

While hanging out waiting for HybridMind to arrive for the meetup, I was chillin’ with billknye.  He was working and I was trying to think of a concept.  I joked about finding inspiration in the local newspaper, so I picked it up and mentioned the front page headline.  It was about a fair-sized fire nearby and billknye made some remark about the gamability of it.  It stuck, I guess.  It turns out to be a creative take on the theme.  Enemy?  Fire.  Weapon?  Fire.  There you have it, a game about fighting forest fires.

I first got the player moving around and then some fires drawing onto a grass buffer:

ld18 - moving fire

Then I worked the rest of the meetup time on getting the fire to spread in a good way:

ld18 - burning holes

The implementation is surprisingly simple, so I’ll be able to polish this baby up…  Like all babies should be?

A NE LD meetup? Baah. Too bad I’m a noob and didn’t hear about this.
22. Aug 2010 · 00:37 UTC
yeah sorry we missed yah. We’re slowly building a contact email list for LDers who wanna meetup near the Greater Boston area (also including Maine,New Hampshire etc)
