Our First Post Mortem.

Our first LD and now our first Post Mortem for our entry https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/exit-space-left .

What went well:
  1. The team: we are 4 friends from the same small town. I already know everybody in the group, but it take just a moment to find the right way to work together. It's really a rare circumstance find the right people to work with, and we're lucky boys! We draft something, merging our idea in a couple of hours (and some coffe): 456.png

  2. The place: @miquik just move to this new house with his wife, so he offer to give us hospitality for the 2 days we can spent on LD. Living 10 minutes away from the headquarters give us the possibility to take a brake and eat something healthy with our families.

  3. Music: we already know to be in safe hands asking Roby to make music for our game. Feedback received confirmed what we thought. Roby was still awake when the theme comes out (it was 3 A.M. in Italy) but you know artists have strange habits. Probably he's also the one that work less (giving awesome results) composing the soundtrack in just a few hours. When we ask for some sounds and a variation on the theme for the final cut scene... it also made them in less then an hour.
  4. Graphics: we love @deck style. He got talent, I can't believe he's just a couple of months that started making draft with his cheap graphics tablet. And he also made a lot of code.

What went wrong:

  1. Using a framework we didn't know: we choose Phaser but we didn't study it, except some snippets. And this was really silly. We lost a lot of time trying to make this: rot.gif but the final result was poor and so we remove the pseudo 3d gameplay. Moving the player out in the space should have zoom out the camera and rotate the asteroid to one of 3 face. Every face with different resources...

  2. So we had no time to test the game play. Even because the last day was a working day for us. This has quickly been confirmed by first feedback. And the second, and third and so on. Considering I played the game only one time (from start to end) before submitting.. this has been a great result!

Thanks you all, that spent some time play our entry and give us your precious feedback. Personally I've enjoy the end of the game ( the final cut scene give me a good feeling) but most of all, we enjoy make a game till the end with such a great group of friends. And play a lot of other gems you made!

Beware, next time we'll make it better!

Ludum Dare 50

I'm just amazed how good is https://microstudio.dev/ for jams.

It's crazy: was my first project with matter (or any other physic engine) I was solo and very short on time (just few hours steal from family matters) but I manage to complete the task.

My only other experience with Ludum Dare was a nightmare, we worked in a team of 3 coders (1 was also a god artist) from early morning to late night, eating pizza and loosing sleep. The final result was terrible (quite terrible) with a final rush to have something vaguely playable.

Now I'm quite sure, we just chosen the wrong tools, so be confident when it comes to choosing your warhorse.
