Ludum Dare 46

Quarternions, how do they work?

This was my first solo entry for Ludum Dare, and only my second entry overall. I really enjoyed the creative control of working solo, and not having to worry about integrating/coordinating with anyone else.

That said, the one thing I missed was having someone to pull me out of the rabbit hole when I got too stuck into a problem. I wanted to use the jam as an opportunity to learn more about mechanics in Unity I hadn't used yet. This meant I spent about 10 hours figuring out different ways to make the sprites move. 10 hours I probably could have spent adding some more features to the finished product, oh well, there's always next time.

I eventually landed on always moving up, but rotating the sprite to set the direction: ezgif.com-video-to-gif.gif

I genuinely did a little happy dance when I got this working. To get it working in the game took another hour or so of figuring out different rotate methods. Unity really didn't make this easy, but I guess that's why it's called a 3D engine and not a 2D engine.

My hours of research look like this in the real thing: ezgif.com-video-to-gif (1).gif

And I still don't understand how quarternions work - but did you know that the Mad Hatters Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland was inspired by them? Off down the rabbit hole we go... :rabbit: :tophat:
