LD 42

First Ludum Dare - I am excited!

Sooo finally! I will be able to participate in this LD. For the first time. Well, that leaves me quite excited - and a little afraid... Haven't been the best with sheduling my time efficiently, basically ever. I guess this will be the perfect practice ground though. Luckily I will have the next few days off, so I may even find some time to prepare and practice.

Although I am not new to coding, creating visual art is still something difficult, new aaand extremeley fun and exciting to me. I already have some experience in sound and music creation - which hopefully saves some time.

For this LD I am probably using at least some of the following tools:

Engine: * Unity (mostly 2D experience, but maybe I'll get into 3D...?) * Twine 2 (w/ SugarCube 2)

Graphics: * Blender (If I'm getting into 3D) * Photoshop

Sound and Music: * Protools 11 * EeastWest digital instruments * (Probably my own guitars) * BandLab's Cakewalk (Free DAW with quite some nice effects and instruments! Give it a try if interested.) * Bosca Ceoil (It's free!! Check it out) * Bfxr (It's free!! Check it out)

I am aiming for the compo, but if that fails horribly I'll go for a jam entry for sure. First aim is to finish my game and have it out there for all of you to rate and review.

Good Luck everyone!!!

It's getting so close

It's really nice to see so many first-timers around, just as me. I am getting more and more excited for the event. Everything is set up, software up to date, vcs repo in place and workspace cleaned up and ready.

I even managed to slip in some practice yesterday and today: creating some small art assets and music in a limited timeframe and coding a quick project in both the engines of my choice for this ludum dare: Unity and Twine.

If anyone is interested in following my totally new and empty twitter you can do so at JackousGames - hopefully it will get more messy as the event goes by. I would love to see some of your work while completely freaking out about my own project (I just know it'll happen).

Just less than 24 hours left. See you all tomorrow!

I finished my first ever game jam!

TLDR; What a great event. I really enjoyed every part of it. If anyone bothers, I would appreciate some feedback. Links at the end of the post.

This was so much fun! I was really excited for this weekend, and it was all worth it. Great experience, with all you could imagine, I felt pretty good overall the entire weekend, seemed to had an concept in mind all the time.

Since I am from Germany, the theme got announced at 0:00am local time on Saturday. I did a quick brainstorming session coming up with some ideas and started working on some basic art - some of it actually made it to the game. I then went for a 5 hour sleep before starting into Saturday - main development day. Everything basically went pretty smooth. I had my concept, followed my keynotes and had a running game by the end of the day. I also managed to include some basic menus and had almost all graphics done. To reenergize I had a nice 7 hours of sleep before waking up for the final countdown. For Sunday that left me with polishing, level design and sound as my main points of focus. I wanted to start music and sound no later than 3pm, so that I had enough time to add everything into the game and eventually build and fix some bugs. In terms of time management I think I did pretty good overall, but got stuck on some sound-questions in the end. I did not want to add footstep or jumping sounds, since we are in space. But it felt like the game was pretty quiet, which is why I opted for some more ambience and environment sounds. Sadly time ran out quickly and not all of my recorded stuff made it into the build.

For the final hour it all went super crazy. I had a basic publishing chain in mind, basically I wanted to use github pages for web publishing and provide an additional windows download. However due to two gamebreaking bugs I had to rebuild twice and that took away almost all of the submission hour. At least I could work on the ldjam game page and readme file while unity was trying to build without collapsing and crashing.

Retro Perspective: Excitement all the way, hectic at the end and overall just very reliefed that I managed to finish something to show you guys.

I would really appreciate any comments / ratings. Will do my best to review all commentators of course!

Thanks for this great event!
