Interesting that you can rate a game without playing it. I even knows that one of the downloads came before I made a LD page. I know it's nothing new, I just hope those that did not plays it gives it a lot 5 stars, but probably not.

Do not hide. Do not be afraid. You need us and we need you. - Lets Jam.

I love jam, and not just the jam that taste a bit like marmalade. The jam I loves more then anything else, is the one we make together. Ludum Dare is a great place to jam, and a lot of people is jamming like real champions, but it's sadly not everyone that takes part of the jamming. I could choose to not care, but I do care, because I also wants you to love jam.

I know that the ones I try to write this to, do probably not read this. But if I don't write it, then they will not have the chance to read it.

Game jams is not just about making games, but it is also about playing, rating, given feedback and sharing. Yes, the Ludum Dare community is good at doing this, but many people is not taking part of this, or at least taking very little part. They are missing the jamming part of the game jam, and just as important for everyone else, is that we also are missing what they could have given to us.

The reason for this is happening can be many, and some reasons is worse then others. I feel really bad for those that is too shy, lacks self-confidence, or for some other reasons don't really like other people to play or see their games. Often they try to hide by not say anything, not upload a thumbnail to their games, and often not write much in the description to their games. Maybe they have a feeling that every one else is better then they are, and what they have done is so bad that it's best hidden in the shadows. But I have over time played a lot of those games, and many of them was really good, and even if they was not the best, they was still a part of the game jam that I also was a part of. I also wants to play and talk to you about your game, and just as important I also wants to hear what people like you think of mine and other peoples games. Do not be afraid to take part of the jamming, because it would be better for you and it would be better for everyone else. Everyone here understand that game jams games is not perfect, and the critic you will get is all about helping you to become a better game developer.

But when that is said there is also some bad reasons for doing very little. Some of the worst is that you don't care about other people, and what they have done. I also often have a feeling that people in big teams expects that others from the team plays, rates and gives feedback. I actually expect that every one in a team plays, rates and gives feedback to 20 games. I do also not give much for the explanation that you don't have time. If you have time to make a game you most likely also have time to play games. And language barriers can be, at least to some degree, helped by things like Google Translate.

I will also say that you shall not just play the games that looking the best, that is the most promoted, or are played a lot by the twitch streamers. Challenge yourself to play, rate and give feedback to the games you would not normally play. I really believe this will make you a better and much more interesting game developer, and at the same time you can do some good for somebody that really needs it.

This is all I had to say this time.

LET'S ALL OF US BE A BIT BETTER JAMMERS!!!

I think it is sad - but I am of course wrong

  • There is in the jam 2284 games. (That is pretty good)
  • There is 1450 games that got 20 or more ratings.
  • So there is 834 games that still needs some ratings to get to the magical 20. (71 is Extra games that do not need ratings, and 33 is set as unfinished. Plus there is a few games that don't want any ratings).
  • The 20 most rated games got a total of 3,086.631 ratings. This is enough ratings for 154.33155 games.
  • There is a lot of games with a lot developers, so there is a lot of people to give a lot of ratings.
  • There is in general a lot people doing very little.

So as I see it, it should not be difficult to make every one to get 20 ratings, but as always it seem to be a big issue.

I believe we can do better, and it should not be necessary with panic mode in the last hours of the jam.

Give is more important than getting

There is a lot a fight to get 20 ratings, but this would not be so much of an issue if everyone was better at given 20 ratings and give 20 games feedback. If you are in a team I would expect everyone in the team to rate and give feedback to 20 games. It's not much to do, and you have a lot of time to play the games.

And remember to rate the games that needs more ratings and feedback.

Without playing, rating and given feedback you are NOT a part of the jam. LD needs you, me, and everyone else to become a bit better jammers.

Somebody are great at guessing how the game is play, or somebody believe they needs to rate games to get higher scores for the Smart Balance.

The story behind this game

It's now 10 years ago I made my first jam game, and the game was "The Love Sheriff ". The game was made for the Ludum Dare 32 and the jam theme was "Unconventional weapon". I have because of the 10th anniversary decided to make a total remake of the game. The game is combination between how the game was made then and how I would make it today.

You can find and try the game here

10 years of game jams

This is the third time I have written an article about the game I made to celebrate my 10 years anniversary making jam games. And sadly no one have played the game, unless you count myself. So once again I hope, I even begs some of you to give the game a chance. It's not perfect, but I spent way to much time on it, and I want to share it with you because I love you - the game jam community.

The game is called "The Love Sheriff", and it's a total remake of the first jam game I have ever made. The game was made for Ludum Dare 32 and the theme for the jam was "Unconventional weapon". This new version is made after the classic compo rules, beside I give my self much more time to make it. So I have made all the music, visuals, voice over and programing. The game is made so it is a mix between the way the game was made then and the way I try to make games today.

I really hop some of you will give the game a chance here

Good luck and have fun

My game jam journey

This time let me also tell you a bit about my game jam journey, and this might explain why I want you to play my game.

Game jams has become a big part of my life. I have made more then 80 jam games. A bit over 20 of those games I have made for Ludum Dare. And even without knowing an exact number I guess I have played about 2500-4000 Ludum Dare games. And I have given a bit of feedback and ratings to most of them. And with all the jams I have taken part of I guess I have played at least 10,000 jam games. So yes this is a lot of games played and a lot games made. But I have only done this because I love making the games, and because I love playing your amazing, weird, funny and interesting games.

So I have made more then 80 jam games, and I have been the winner of zero of them. Okay a have a couple of second places, but those I have gotten for making something so weird that they thought it must be very innovative. But none of this matter because I have always tried to make the games I like, even if it's not something many other people would like.

I could here write a long list of the games I have made, and I could write a long article about them, but it's not very interesting. And by the way the most of them is not super great, but hopefully I learned something from making them. And the main part of the jams for me, is to try ideas and having fun making games. And some times I have made games I have liked, and I have also worked a bit more on some of them, but I have never made a super big commercial game.

But just as important as making games for the jams, I love playing the games. Okay when you have played 10,000 jam games, there are a lot of games that is very similar, but I still find games that do something fun and interesting. And playing jam games is super fun, and sometimes also a pretty weird experience. But I still love doing it, and I always tries to give my honest feedback.

So for me this my short summery of the first 10 years with game jamming. I still have fun doing it, so I believe I will make many more jam games.

And 'The Love Sheriff' is my way to show what I have learned from making all of those games, and from all the things I learned and been inspired by from all your jam games.
