After about 3 hours of work, I've got a concept I'm more or less happy with and some basic code that isn't over-the-top terrible! (For my first time making an SDL2 game) :grinning:
After about 3 hours of work, I've got a concept I'm more or less happy with and some basic code that isn't over-the-top terrible! (For my first time making an SDL2 game) :grinning:

(The cats are supposed to look cheerful, not sad, and the player will be replaced with a better sprite soon enough.)
(The final game won't play much like this but this should give an idea of what I've got so far)
Now, the game looks exactly the same as it did 2 hours ago, but it has been adapted to use SDLTextures and it also caches pointers to the textures (not sure if I'm doing it right but whatever) instead of reading them from disk each time a new sprite appears.

But still, we've got looong way to go.

After searching how to display text with SDL2 eventually I decided it would be easiest to make a small (19-character) bitmap font myself in GIMP... So here it is
Of course the letters look a bit rough but I think it'll pass...
(This is for the Jam)

I think my game is progressing well. I've got all the big features I was planning done, but it still needs a lot more polish (notably, NPC interaction is very primitive and the game is completely silent) and a lot more levels (so far I just have 2 introductory levels followed by a simple "You won" level). It's getting late, so I'm stopping here and then I'll finish it tomorrow.
Alright, now I've got less than 2 ½ hours left to do the finishing touches and add a couple more levels.
With 1 hour 6 minutes left, I think I'll stop with level design and just make sure everything works smoothly and add some finishing touches before uploading it to GitHub and packaging the game.
Hi, I published a new Mac build of my Jam game Pet Overload. What's different is now it should work seamlessly with any x86-64 Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or higher, and it no longer needs to be installed into /Applications (using CoreFoundation to get bundle path).
