Ludum Dare 48

LD48 aka My first Jam!

After about 3 years of game development being an on-and-off hobby with, tbh, not as much to show as I'd like, I felt that I have enough skill and experience to finally participate in Ludum Dare, something that seemed unreachable even a few months ago. I was originally going to do the compo, however, after asking my cousin(who hasn't registered an account yet), and he agreed, I decided we should team up and do the Jam. Let's just say that I'm not the best artist haha. Software I plan on using are as follows:

Game design: IntelliJ IDE for Java development OR Fusion 2.5, whichever I feel when the theme is released Audio: Bosca Ceoil for music and BFXR or SFXR for in-game audio GFX: Paint.NET, or possibly Krita?

Despite the Jam's leniency, we still intend to create all assets within the 72 hour period. Essentially, I am holding myself to the same rules as the compo, just with another person to help out.

Just saw everyone else doing this as the date nears so I thought I would do the same. Thank you for taking the time to read, and have a nice day :)

Feeling Motivated

In a previous post I said that I might use Clickteam Fusion to create my submission, but I honestly think I'm just gonna use Java, because making an engine from scratch just feels a lot more fun to me (and I've also been watched archived streams of Notch's previous entries like 'Prelude of the Chambered' and 'Minicraft' so that is also a motivator lol :P)

Tired and uninspired :D

just got a lot of the boilerplate and engine code going, but as far as the gameplay is concerned, executing it seem... interesting. I need sleep

Done :D

Gonna post the link soon

Posted!

Had some trouble with the jar file giving me nullpointers bc of sound paths but i fixed it just in time! Page is here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/inefishient I havent beaten it yet lol (it is beatable, i'm just lazy lmao)

Maybe participating

I love the theme this year but I don’t know if I’ll be able to participate this time because I’m currently on a 4 hour bus ride for a marching band competition and I won’t get home until 4 am on Sunday D: unfortunate timing but I might try to make something really small when I get home and submit it to the jam instead of the compo idk. Lots of time to brainstorm tho lol. Lots of great things in the feed so far tho! Keep up the grind 👾

Second Jam! I am in!

I am planning on participating! Once again though, my band commitments are messing up my schedule bc of an indoor percussion performance on the most important day of any weekend jam. I will probably have to do the jam and grind until Monday night. Thankfully my last year of high school so no more band in future jams 😂 I will be using Java with the eclipse IDE (or clickteam fusion if I’m in a mega time crunch) and Krita for artwork, BFXR for Sfx and Bosca ceoil for music!

My theme suggestions

-something from nothing -growing older -feeling watched

Music Software

Does anyone have any suggestions for any free music/daw for making cool video game music that would be pretty quick to learn and doesn’t require a physical electric keyboard? Ik bosca ceoil is great but it is too 8-bit for some genres at times (Ik it’s technically not 8-bit but idk how else to say it) are there any indie devs that have any good suggestions?

I suppose I'm in!...

I hadn't thought about LD for a while and when it crossed my mind, I realized it was 10 days away. I took that as a sign to at least try this time. I did a game for LD48 and attempted again at 51 or something but failed in that one. So this is going to be really low pressure and if I don't make it it's alright. I'll be using the Eclipse IDE to write in Java and it's built in libraries via the Eclipse Temurin OpenJDK to construct the engine because that's how I role. I know it's kinda unconventional but it works for me. And I'm too unmotivated to learn SDL or any other C/C++ related frameworks right now. (I don't like using engines that much) I don't really know what I'll use for sound or anything, maybe GarageBand bc I'm on Mac this time around. If I manage to keep up in my studies this weekend and finish a game I will be very impressed with myself. Good luck!

ALSO: a question regarding the COMPO: Would it be against the rules for me and a friend to work solo on our own projects but in the same room and conversing about our progress and ideas? Or do we literally have to be like alone? lol

What languages are y'all using?

This is mostly geared toward people using frameworks rather than engines, but the question is open to anybody! As someone who enjoys writing my games from scratch in game jams, I was wondering of some of the other tools that people who enjoy the same use. C/C++ and SDL? Python and Pygame? I'm also curious if anyone else uses Java to make their jam games. I always like watching Notch's archived streams from past Ludum Dares. Does anyone else use Java to make their games, or am I just weird? 8 hours to go! Good luck everyone!

Finally an Idea! It's never too late!

I went to bed demotivated because I did not have any good ideas. I deleted my work on the engine because I figured I was throwing in the towel. I woke up and had an idea that might work! Figured I should start on the graphics first so I don't lose my vision. Screenshot 2023-09-30 at 11.28.57 AM.png
