Just a Stroll
We created Just a Stroll for Ludum Dare 46. Our team consisted of four people: two guys in mid 30s and two gals in mid 20s, all working as programmers. We worked fully remote, with two people located in Poland and two in the UK. One person had some game previous jam experience (as well as some professional game development experience), but for the remaining three this was the first game jam ever. In fact, for me this was the first game ever written - it was something I always wanted to do and I'm glad the quarantine gave me an opportunity.
We decided to write our game in Haxe language using the heaps.io engine, which is the same engine as used by the fantastic Dead Cells. We went in with little to no knowledge of this technology with the assumption that this will be an opportunity to learn something new. After the first day things weren't looking good, but despite that towards the end of second day we had a working game. We spent the third day on polishing and balancing. There were a few things that caused us trouble but overall the game turned out a lot better than any of us had imagined. Most importantly - it is fun!
The game itself is inspired by Crimsonland, but we went for a retro pixel-art feel. Game's premise is simple: a stroll in the park turns nasty as It, our protagonist, gets attacked by bloodthirsty pigeons. Now you take control of It and pay pigeons back with stones. Also, throwing breadcrumbs allows to temporarily detract pigeons' attention away from you, providing some mob control. It gets bloody.
The game is playable in a web browser on itch.io. Enjoy!
