Icarus Isolation

Schermafbeelding 2017-04-25 om 03.05.44.png Discover the small worlds in the skies. Fly between islands and unravel the mystery of Icarus Isolation.

I wanted to submit this for the compo, but my RAM was mysteriously filled so I had to restart, update and force quit till I got it to work on the last day of the jam. So it’s a game jam game now.

This is my first entry to LD, nice to be in :)

source: contact me for a zip of the unity project, I didn’t have the time to figure out how to put it online :(

Remember: bugs are frenemies

Okay, I know we all hate bugs, but I want to remind you guys that it's important to review your games. Don't be ashamed to report bugs in the comments. I found 4 new bugs while playing my game after uploading and now I know what to look out for next jam.

Let us not only review the work of others but also improve our own work! Lets enjoy some Ludum Dare games and fix some bugs!

Please find some bugs in my game ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ) and report them if you find any :-)

The Not-so-proper-tutorial

I didn't have the time to program a tutorial and as I expected: people had some trouble with the controls of Icarus Isolation ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ). So here is the not-in-game-totally-not-so-proper-tutorial for Icarus Isolation!

Send me a link and I'll play

Schermafbeelding 2017-04-28 om 16.29.17.png Send me a link to your Ludum Dare game! If it supports mac (or if it's playable on the web), I'll give it a shot and leave some feedback. You can check out my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation

Some cool flying skills

:dove::dove: Since there is a dramatic learning curve to the controls in Icarus Isolation ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ). I thought I'd show you how the game plays once you master the controls.

I will update the project so that there are more control options and a very clear tutorial (I have a temporary tutorial on YouTube) will be in the game. I will not change the controls, since I chose for these controls to add more realism and provide more options for movement, but I will do what I can to make them easier to master and I will provide the option to switch to mouse controls. :dove::dove:

Bug Fix!

Hello,

I just uploaded version 1.2 of my game ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ). In this version I fixed some bugs (details below), added mouse control and added some extra rings in the air to help with learning the controls. If you want to judge my LD entry, you should check out version 1.0. Version 1.2, however, is an overall better game so I advise you play that version instead.

The following bugs were fixed: - Collecting crystal while in the sky (this could result in a hardlock) - The permanent top down camera bug - collision bugs - minor bug fixes

Help: changing avatar

How do you change your profile picture? I've seen 3 accounts with custom images already.

Share your story!

I wanted to enter the compo this Ludum Dare, but my computer had mysterious issues with its RAM, which disrupted my workflow. I had to stop many times because of my RAM filling up and even had to leave it overnight for a cleanup. I also took my laptop to a birthday to keep working on my game ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ) but was obligated to stop at one point. I also got somewhat forced to watch a movie (I watched IT which is three hours long). That's how my compo game eventually became a game jam game.

Did you guys have any disturbances in your workflow? Have any of you maybe also moved from the compo to the jam?

Good luck voting guys!

The title speaks for itself. If you want check out my game :-) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/icarus-isolation ezgif-1-195cbc7a00.gif

Lets talk :-)

Is there any forum or other online environment for people who just want to talk about Ludum Dare / with fellow Ludum Dare participants? Most people around here seem really friendly, it might be interesting to be able to chat a little more with some devs without spamming the LD comment section. If there is some place LD devs can chat a little more, it might even result in some cool collaborations. If this online environment doesn't already exist. Maybe we could make a Facebook group or something. Anyway share some ideas maybe.

Character Design Ideas

Here's an idea for designing characters quickly: base your characters on Ludum Dare! I don't know how many of you would be into this, but it could provide some interesting characters. It would also give us some sort of unity (not the game engine). Tell me if you like this idea or send me examples of this concept. Maybe we could also include the Mike chicken in or games or something. It would be sort of fun to reference the event in our games. It'd make LD games stand out from regular GJ games.

I gave a quick shot at designing an LD inspired character myself. Have a look: LD392.png It was quite fun using the LD color scheme.

Finally

Schermafbeelding 2017-12-04 om 01.10.17.png

Finally I've finished everything! Last time (LD38) I couldn't make it in time for the compo, so I joined the jam. This time I've finished in time even though I, just like last time, had social obligations to attend to. Please check out Prinsen Gulden: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/$64871 I'll work on some gifs now, upload my time lapse and check out some LD games.

Prinsen Gulden - patched

giphy-1.gif

I patched Prinsen Gulden! I removed some small bugs, fixed some unfair level design aspects and more. You can find the details on the game's page below. Note: the first version is still on itch. When rating use the version, when playing for fun use the patched version.

Even though the video is sped up a few thousand percent, it still is half an hour long! Here is the timelapse which shows the creation process of Prinsen Gulden (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/prinsen-gulden).

Too many notifications

Anyone else feel like they're blasted with notifications? I left a lot of feedback, which means that in half a day I get 200 notifications. I feel like it would be better if I'd only get notified if people responded to my games, posts or use @myusername in their comment.

Patch 1.3 for Prinsen Gulden!

guld.png

I made another patch based upon some feedback.

Version 1.3 note: -tutorial has been added -crouching stops momentum

The compo version is still on itch. The unity project on itch is from this version (no patches).

Game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/prinsen-gulden

Do you download source files?

I noticed 5 people have downloaded the unity project of my game Prinsen Gulden ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/prinsen-gulden )! I wonder what people do with it? I guess they study how I did certain things... Though, I can't imagine Prinsen Gulden's code would be all that interesting.

Have you downloaded unity projects (or source codes)? If so, what did you do with or what did you use it for?

Moar ratings! :-D

giphy-1.gif

Prinsen Gulden's ratings haven't seen much action this week. I've beaten my record from LD 38 already but want to give my future self more of a challenge! Please play and rate my game Prinsen Gulden: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/prinsen-gulden

Prinsen Gulden - patch 1.4

giphy-6.gif Yet another patch! Unless anything game breaking is discovered I won't be patching Prinsen Gulden any time soon. I tried to fix as many problems as possible but I'm now at a point where I'm pretty content with the product. Check out the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/prinsen-gulden

Version 1.4 note:

-videos supporting the tutorial have been added to the desktop version

-minor balancing on level sections

-addition of a minimap

For those still finding Prinsen Gulden hard to play, I made a video showing you how to at least clear the tutorial:
