Getting started

Wow, I really was a bit unprepared for the chosen theme, but I’m sure “You only get one” opens a giant door to creativity. I’ll start creating a generic base in GameMaker and then I’ll start to implement something to it.

I really wanted to work with “The begining is the end” though ):

You only get one direction!

After making the character (currently a box) go left and right, up and down, It’s pretty much estabilished that the core of my game will be choosing which axis you want to use. Do you want to explore left/right? So you can’t explore elsewhere, and so on. If there’s time I’ll probably add the possibility of going up, but it’s a bit tricky since I’m using a top camera. We’ll see.

I still don’t have a visual theme to go with the mechanics. Probably space, so I can use a simple hipster-y blue/purple background and boring gray walls.

Now it’s 4 a.m. ): Getting some sleep before my brain shuts down.

Some graphics

So I woke up 9 a.m., which granted me five magical hours of sleep, and SUDDENLY ART! This is the concept of the character, and then the sprites that will be used in the game. I’m not used with pixel art (or art at all), so I kept it simple.

I also did a crap background with a lot of photoshop and filters. I know it looks really artificial, but let’s pretend it will look better hidden by the other things (the playable part itself).

Now let’s make some actual level design, shall we?

About that level design thing

So instead of doing something playable, I just went with more graphics and “finished” the main menu, the vertical lobby and the horizontal lobby. Since it’s an open area but you only walk in one axis, the “indoor” parts will be more narrow.

Probably changing the crystal in the menu with something similar to a flower, since the “bridges” endend up looking like petals.

Sleeping issues

Yesterday was pretty harsh. I guess waking up 6a.m. to work on Friday, then staying up until 4.a.m. with too much energy drinks  wasn’t exactly the smartest choice. After my last post, I started doing the left side of the game, but twenty minutes in I was still looking at a gray block with one eye and sleeping with the other. So I decided to call it a day, play some League of Legends and go to sleep. There was a small hope that if I when to bed 11:30 p.m., my body would’nt hate me if I woke up 5 a.m. to finish the game. Wrong wrong wrong. So I gave up and slept until now, 8a.m.

I wasn’t expecting that, besides the time limit, the most dificult part would be being so goddam tired. But oh well, I’m learning to deal with it.

Probably my next LD game will be a text adventure 😛

For now, let’s stop crying and start working.

I’m out

So I decided to completely change my game because I wasn’t going to be able to finish in time the way I was doing it. So I worked the whole morning and half the afternoon, only to notice that even the new idea wasn’t going to where I wanted either. I could probably finish it, since there’s only the ending and the soundtrack missing, but eh. The challenge is to finish a game in 48h, but it’s supposed to be fun, not mandatory. The moment you stop having fun and is just making it for the sake of finishing, and doing an half-assed job, you should stop.

I did.

Here’s a link to the actual state of the game, if there’s anyone interested. Keep in mind that the “about” button doesn’t work and there isn’t an ending once you enter one of the pink portals. Also, some images.
