LD23

Here goes nothing

This will be my first time competing in LD48, and my first time trying to make a game with a decent degree of seriousness and motivation.  I have a college assignment to finish before I start getting really prepared, though.

Programming competitions are no new thing to me, I’ve participated in plenty during my time here at college, but to me, writing applications to show knowledge of an algorithm or a concept is quite different than game development.  I have no professional or formal experience with developing games, it’s all basically what I’ve collected from the internet and my own observations over the years.

I’ve worked on a number of projects, and completed some of the smaller ones (especially ones done as assignments).  To be honest, I have a hard time motivating myself, and forming reasonable goals for me to accomplish, and because of that, I’ve never finished a game.  Usually the ideas I have a too large a scope for me to accomplish alone feasibly.

I’m not looking to get noticed, and I’m not confident that I’ll make anything good, but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to gauge where I am as a developer, and that I can possibly figure out where I need to improve.

Hope it’s not too late

I know we’re supposed to note it down before the compo, but I ended up taking my time getting some work done.

I’ll be using C++ with SFML and OpenGL, possibly Box2D.  Don’t know what else I’d really need to specify, I guess.  Possibly GLEW or something for extensions, if I really end up needing them.

Good luck everyone!

Maybe next time

I’m not so good at actually coming up with any good gameplay or design ideas, and ended up spending most of my time messing around and trying to think of what to do next.  Nothing really came up that seemed inventive, interesting, or original, so I gave up.  What I managed to make wasn’t really a game but more of a barely interactive world.  A disc-like world could be flipped over and reveal that there were actually more than two sides (the side facing away as you flipped it would change).

You need to release that prototype. That sounds amazing.

I’m with Sonny. I want to see it! The screenshot is soooo tempting.

Time to see how much I can get done this time around.

Using C++. SFML, OpenGL, possibly a utility library or two, depending on what is needed.

EDIT: Alright, turns out I lied.  Partway in I decided to try my luck with Unity instead.
