Ludum Dare 52

A wild weekend

We've had a wild weekend! Initially we started as a team of three then we lost one due to a destroyed laptop then gained one? and then the weekend got more crazy from there.. SO its just been me so far! But that's ok! I made some good progress.

Our game is about genetically modified crops that explode! You can mix them to get different ammo types. I didn't know how long we would have to flush out a good story so I added a news ticket on the bottom and we can use that to build some atmosphere.

Im excited to see how much we can get done today.

Almost time

The wild weekend is finishing up, Its just me the rest of my team has had their laptop destroyed or had to bow out due to physical injury(unrelated to the dare... as far as I can tell).

I think I had initially scoped this out to be a 3-4 person project and as life took people away I should have reeled in the scope but I'm happy with it. This is my second Jam and I think its been really good for helping me to get an idea of how much work I can get done in an hour or a weekend. In my head it always seems to be much more than the reality.

I wanted to spend more time making a funny atmosphere but I ended up spending WAY to long on this stupid video.... that I kinda hate.. ●_●

But I do like the news ticker ^̮ ̮^

Post mortem: Happy but itching for LD53

I spent half an hour on a short 5 minuet live action intro and it ended up being the best part of my game :D

Throughout the Jam I worked on quite a few different mechanics before I settled on this Ammo combination thing which was cool but I think I was getting diminishing returns. The intro works so well cause it flavors the rest of the game which I wouldn't have time to flesh out otherwise. The level design is pretty bad so you don't get a good experience after 30 seconds of gameplay. When LD53 comes around I think I will stick to a few goals:

  • After the first day, the gameplay concept doesn't change(unless it REALLY needs to)
  • If it's going to have levels I need the level design tooling done by the end of day two or there is only going to be one level
  • I want to avoid combat games(unless its funny)
  • Before the jam starts I want to do a Mini jam either by myself or with a team. I spent the first four hours getting re-acquainted with godot after taking a long break.

Last Jam I felt an existential dread for failing to capture the heights of our imagined vision, this year I felt at peace when it was over. I have a good feeling about the next Jam. I want to do something musical or 3d but... I will see where I am when we get there.
