I don't think I've ever posted a retrospective/post mortem here sooo here's a quick one for Nap Guardian
Things that went well
My plan is usually: Spend the Friday night making a mockup/planning out gameplay, Saturday finishing the base "game" (all mechanics + most art + some sound), and spend Sunday adding extra art/dialogue/sfx. I stuck to this and it's nice having a pretty chill Sunday where you know you can submit at any time!
- Fought off the urge to scrap ideas or redo art
I always want to explore a bunch of different ideas, or draw multiple mockups... but I find that if I'm going to get a jam game to a playable state I need to just stick with an idea and keep moving forward.
- I actually added a tutorial!!
No one likes having to read a paragraph of text on the game page to figure out how your game works. If you're like me you forget everything as soon as the game starts anyway. I'm really glad I allocated time and effort to making a tutorial this time, it ended up being really fun!
Things that went... okay...
- Polished mechanics but didn't push them very far
I spent a decent chunk of time trying to make the initial mechanics feel good, but I rushed into making the whole game after that. If I would have spent another hour or two thinking about the core gameplay loop I could have pushed the base mechanics farther.
I thought an "endless mode" where enemies spawn forever would have been cool, but I backed out because I was afraid people would be annoyed that the game wasn't ending lol. Turns out some people wanted that!
Things that went not so well
- Spent too long playtesting lol
I think I probably spent at least 2 hours of the jam procrastinating by """playtesting""". It's good to be thorough, but I could have used that time to add some of the extra sword/item mechanics I had as stretch goals. Whoops...
- Took a couple bad shortcuts
I was lazy and just created a big texture rect for the background instead of making ~6 background tiles. I ended up having to change the map layout a few times, and re-drawing the shadows and moving details on the background to match the new layout was a really stupid time sink...
The end.
Thanks for reading and to those who have played my game already! Congrats to everyone who finished a game, can't wait to keep playing and rating <3
