Ludum Dare 18 Judging

Judging is on!

On the voting page, all participants are assigned 20 random games. If you can make an effort to play and rate these games, then we’ll get a good distribution of votes for all games. The more games you play, the higher your placement on the “Coolness” charts. The list will grow as you play more.

If a competition participant forgot to include source, please don’t down-vote them, but politely remind them to include it. All verified, thanks sfernald.

Ludum Dare 18 Jam Games, Compo Games, oh my!

Ludum Dare 18 was our first trial run of the new combined Competition and Jam event. So in addition to the 172 entries created by individuals for competition, there are 41 more games created teams or individuals that decided to take an extra day to polish their game. Be sure to check those out here:

ALL JAM GAMES (41) <--

[ ALL COMPO GAMES (172) | ALL GAMES (213) ]

Overall, the response to the Competition and Jam has been extremely positive. But now that the Ludum Dare 18 has come to a close, we’d like to hear your thoughts.

And THAT was Ludum Dare 18

What an incredible event! Thanks everyone for making Ludum Dare 18 such a big deal.

When the smoke cleared, we had a total 213 games across both the Competition and Jam! This is our current “high score”, 10 entries ahead of Ludum Dare 17 in April (203).

During the final theme voting round, we collected nearly 500 votes in a single day! If we’re to take that as the number of participants, that means Ludum Dare 18 had an over 40% completed game rate! Wow!

Theme voting results can be found here.

Press Coverage (Viral Timelapse Videos)

As for other happenings, Ludum Dare made an impressive showing in the gaming press, especially the timelapse video from one Notch. Kotaku, Engadget, Digg; You name it, they covered it. 200,000 Youtube views later…

In addition, IndieGames.com and Bytejacker are back with a quick look at many games from the competition. Go see if you were one of them.

Ludum Dare Games at Toronto Exhibit

I was asked by a friend for a list of “art games” from Ludum Dare events (current and past). I gave him a few off the top of my head, but LD is so big now, I could use everyone’s help making a list of Ludum Dare “art games”. For details and to give me your suggestions, see this post.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2010/09/06/ld-art-games-at-exhibit/

Feel free to nominate games you made. 😉

Ludum Dare 19 has ended! Time to rate games!

Both the Compo and the Jam have finally ended. Thank you everyone for joining us this December for our 19th event. By the time the clocks hit zero, we had 285 entries!! **

243 Compo, 42 Jam! Wow! New records across the board!

Since the holidays are coming up, we’ve decided to make judging last for 3 weeks instead of the usual two. Everyone has been randomly assigned 20 games, so please make an effort to play as many of those as you can. The list will grow over time, revealing more games to play.

Our next major event (Ludum Dare 20) will be in April 2011. Stay tuned to the mailing list for details.

Also! Game Developers Conference attendees, stay tuned! Like last year, we’re looking to arrange a meetup. Details will be here on the website, but I’ll be sure to ping the mailing list once things are more concrete.

Thanks again everyone for coming out, and we hope you have a safe and Happy Holidays.

PS: ** InaVegt, please check your game and post a comment. For some reason it’s flagged as disabled (an LD website bug?). Let me know where it should be (Compo/Jam) and I can fix it.

Ludum Dare 19 Jam Games!

Ludum Dare 19 was our 2nd run of the new combined Competition and Jam event, and the results do not disappoint. So in addition to the 242 entries created by individuals for competition, there are 43 more games created teams or individuals that decided to take an extra day to polish their game. Be sure to check those out here:

ALL JAM GAMES (43) <--

[ ALL COMPO GAMES (242) | ALL GAMES (285) ]

Wow!

So THAT was Ludum Dare 19

We are keeping score here, and again, the latest event managed to annihilate our prior best … IN DECEMBER of all months too (our historically lowest month). Back in August, we were impressed that we inched 10 ahead of our prior best, with 213. This time, we were just 15 entries shy of 300! And if you look at the theme voting, more than 600 people cast a vote for the final theme!

And THAT was Ludum Dare in 2010

Lets crunch some numbers…

Event Games: 203+213+285 = 701
Mini LD Games: 2+21+2+6+14+24+9+7 = 85
October Challenge: 24
Total Games for 2010: 701+85+24 = 810

Thanks to Sos for helping me with the math.

Seriously, every single one of you that participated, whether you finished a game or not, you’re awesome. Phil and I (Mike/PoV) took over running Ludum Dare in 2007, and every event since we’ve been constantly impressed at how much it’s grown, and continue to be amazed that it keeps growing so much. What will 2011 bring? Will we break 1000 games?

A big thanks to all of you for helping us make 2010 such a fantastic year.

New Entry Voting Category: Mood

So as of Ludum Dare 22, we’ve added a new entry voting category: Mood

With a theme like Alone, we realize the possibilities for storytelling, sadness, and generally playing with emotion are plentiful. There’s been much debate whether Humor should be retired in favor of a more general category. Mood has been our favorite for a while now, but as a term it doesn’t exactly emphasize humor in any way (if anything, humor gets lost in mood). So to appease both fans of the funny and fans of the serious, we’ll try both.

We hope you like the addition of Mood to the entry voting categories list.

Changing the Hashtag (#LD48 to #LDJAM)

Hey folks! Mike here!

I was going to do a video for this, but it’s a lot faster for me to just write.

I’d like us to change the Hashtag (#LD48). It’s a common source of confusion for new participants (“I thought it was LD 31?”), which is about half of everyone participating in Ludum Dare events. And given all the other Ludum Dare numerics (72 hour jam, 48 hour compo, every past event), it’s helping nobody.

My proposed alternative is:

#LDJAM

When we started Ludum Dare 12 years ago, the term “Game Jam” hadn’t caught on. Instead, we took our inspirations from the Demoscene (i.e. “compo”). Nowadays though, Game Jams are what people call what we do. And even if you don’t know what a Game Jam is, you probably know the music term Jam/Jamming, or the sugary spread you put on your toast (arguably both are accurate descriptors of what we do). 😉

It’s unfortunately to change something we’ve been doing for 12 years (calling Ludum Dare LD48), but it’s a necessary step towards helping more people understand what we do.

This doesn’t solve the confusion between the Jam and Compo, but I think it’s still a better problem to have than having no idea what we do.

PLUS: ldj.am was available. Should make a good URL shortener. 😀
