looks like something i should try in my free time. The only problem i have with this is that from the image it looks like some parts are higher definition then others, woch kindof makes my eyes hurt (ex:the hearts are realy high definition , wile the tiles (even though they may be the same definition )look “retro”, and finaly the guy is very blury. To be in the retro spirit can you make the hearts a bit more “pixely”?

MiniLD 53 – A Cruel World’s Post-Mortem

So the Mini Ludum Dare #53 was my first ever LD, and all I can say is that it was fantastic! Great people, game development, and an excuse to geek out and rapidly destroy my health over the period of 48 hours. I entered the jam as a solo participant (because I don’t have any game developer friends in real life) and spent the weekend in the solitude of my study. It was an experience that definitely opened my eyes to quite a few things.

The Game

A Cruel World was my attempt to express my artistic side a bit. I don’t have time to do art anymore, and even though I’m terrible at digital art (I’m more comfortable with a good ol’ pencil and paper) it was a great learning experience for me. Although the atmosphere may have been a little wishy-washy, it was meant to be a depressing exploration game covering the topics of corruption and greed, self-image issues, deforestation, animal cruelty, and over-reliance on religion. This was my take on ‘The Future Is Now’ theme – because these are problems that we face today, that will only worsen as time goes by.

The atmosphere I aimed for was heavy, with anthropomorphic character designs that matched each NPCs character (such as the wolf being the greedy salesman, and the sheep being the religious figure). I would have loved to have had more time to build a more complete world and to iron out many of the bugs, but alas it didn’t work out this way.

The first level of the game, where a poor man tells the player about the world.

The first level of the game, where a poor man tells the player about the world.

The Development Process

With only 48 hours to complete the game, I used my own libGDX-based framework (with already implemented input, render, debugging, and audio controller classes). From here, it was a simple matter of creating the world-space, drawing the art, coding the logic, and slapping in some audio for good measure. I started with a notebook and pencil for all my designs (all concepts, artwork, algorithms, and level layouts) and subsequently implemented my designs as I went.

Although I have developed a few small games, I have explored quite a lot of new territory this time around. For instance, I have never written a free-roaming game with separate levels, so this was an interesting endeavor to implement dedicated classes, each with their own self-contained logic, for each world-space. An inventory system (although extremely basic) was another thing that I had never touched on.

The fact that I had an extremely tight schedule and clear deadline definitely helped me set aside my uncertainty and simply slap together code to make it all work. I tend to be overly pedantic when it comes to programming, always considering optimal memory/CPU usage, neatness, code commenting, and so on. There is no time for this in LD however, and this really helped me overcome my care and simply MAKE THINGS WORK (albeit only adopting this strategy nearly half-way through the compo).

Exerts from my MLD#53 design book.

Exerts from my MLD#53 design book.

What I Took Away

All in all, I was quite happy with the result. It may be slightly buggy, and perhaps I could have been clearer about where to go and what to do, but then again it is an exploration game. I would have changed a few things if I could however, but as I said I had run out of time.

First things first, I realize now that programming is my absolute favorite part of the game development process. The labyrinth of flowing code is an intoxicating mind-game to me – a way to lose myself in complicated algorithms and hierarchical visibility. I loved the art side of things as well, but I found it became somewhat tedious (and anyone who has played my game may see how the quality of art declines the further you get.) This may have been the problem of hand-drawn art taking so damn long to make, and this coupled with the deadline put me off. Who knows?

Secondly, I learned that an exploration game is not the best approach to compo with such a short deadline. It has almost zero replay-ability, the slightest bugs come out glaring like a car’s headlights in the dead of night and utterly ruin the experience, and you simply do not have enough time to create an expansive and interesting world that will offer a lengthily play-through.

On the game front, I definitely would have approached some problems differently. I relied too heavily on boolean control variables for inter-class communication, which could have been replaced by a much more, much simpler system if I simply based actions on player position, instead of an activation button while the player stands at a specific position. It’s a minor thing, but this simply change would have saved me an hour or two of debugging which could have been used far more productively. Good knowledge for next time then.

All in all however (as I said), I am pleased with what I accomplished. The purpose of these jams is to extend your knowledge and experience, and this is exactly what I managed to do. I explored new territory with A Cruel World, and enjoyed every sleep-deprived second of it. I’ll definitely be more confident, prepared, and efficient at the next Ludum Dare. I will also take what I have learnt in the mere 48 hours of development and funnel it into my current Android game – a project I hope to complete soon and release on the Play Store.

To end off this post, I have uploaded the time-lapse video of the development process for anyone who likes to stare at low-framerate, illegible windows:

Just another note: I haven’t had the chance to play through any other games as of yet. I’ve been out of town, and operating only by smartphone for the last couple of days. Last night I returned, and I’m off again tomorrow morning. Perhaps next week I will have a gap in order to melt my mind with some of your guy’s lovely creativity. Until then, have good one!

Yamanu Game Engine – 1.1

Hey there!

The response to 1.0 was great, I really appreciate it! Now, we have Yamanu 1.1! This one mainly added some profiling and utilities. My favorite of which would be the processor information. You can get the processor vendor, and speed very easily with Yamanu!

Basic Application (Made with Yamanu)

Thanks guys! There will be a video out soon explaining the basic app, and how YGEApplication works! Sorry the website’s down. It’s a free website. If I get enough support, I might pay for hosting and a domain, so you guys can have a place to go for all of this instead of me putting it in a post on Ludum Dare. Anyways, have fun!

EDIT: Nothing has been tested on Mac yet, so if anyone that has a Mac wants to play around with Yamanu, go ahead! Email me here to tell me if there’s anything wrong.

Why would anyone (i mean any one) want to get processor vendor in java? That a kick in the face to everybody who worked so hard to make java MUFTI-PLATFORM.

I don’t know, maybe someone will use Yamanu as a way to make a System Information application, and that’s just an easy way to get the vendor and speed.

There we go Summer Game Jam 2014!

Love2d Tile Based collisions :D, and Console Lib

my own personal collision library used for tile collisions, it uses rectangular hitboxes and returns a value when colliding.

iterates through a table named tiles to find when each side of an obj is colliding with a tile.

Also includes a library for a console, this is to be used in ludum dare 30 with the tile collisions

Yay! Collision!

Howdy

Hello! I have just joined Ludum Dare and I am a proficient programmer in python and pygame, although I know a very small amount in C and C++. I would like to work with someone on a jam sometime.  I am always open to suggestions, and I will most likely make development updates and postmortems for most of my games.

Ion is the one I tried. It is very glitch. The main problem I noticed was character movement and scrolling. I needed to open task manager to close it.

Under Ytan – kind of update.

Remember that game about walking on water? No? Well.. okay..

It just so happens I made a flashy itch.io site for the post-compo version of the game(We’re talking Under Ytan here for anyone not keeping up, you know, that I made for LD29), and I just kind of wanted to tell you guys it exists. Ludum Dare is pretty much the reason I still make games, it made me actually finish something, over and over again! Awesome feeling! So as kind of a loveletter to Ludum I want to tell you that you can find both Under Ytan and a game I made earlier this year(Outside of LD, believe it or not) on my itch.io page!

Image5

The game is call “hets” and is of the 2D platformer, hectic, randomized, powerup collecting, monster shooting kind. It also is in pretty edgy gritty pixel style, a style I’m kinda pleased with if I can say so myself!

hets sceeeny

I like games where things are fast. Very fast. I also like games that are sort of unforgiving, and doesn’t hold your hand really, but still lets you practice until you are good enough to beat the crap out of it! I think I managed to make hets one of those games.

Why not give it a try, both hets and Under Ytan are free to download and play! (But I mean, if you’re thinking to yourself “Hey, that Ditto guy is probably starving and struggling to pay rent… Maybe he’d like a dollar!” you caaaan kind of give me a dollar for the effort… if you want to!)

Download Under Ytan here!

Hope you like the games!

Great so far. However, try saturating the colors just a bit. They SHOULD be powerful, but they’re too powerful for now.

That is a really good point! Both these games are made on my laptop since I’ve been living away from home for a long time now. The screen on my laptop is really shitty so everything is already very saturated, and I also find something satisfying in using full colors (‘255,0,128’ in RGB for instance).

Will keep in mind for future projects, in a week I’m back to using my good old screen also, which has much better colors, making it easier to realize these kinds of problems!

i just get a black screen with music… :(

German: gaaaah I thought I’d fixed that.. You’re not the first to have that problem with my games, I wish I had an easy fix for you.. But sadly I don’t the only solution I’ve come up with is me creating a installer for the game which you can install and then play. I’ll upload an installer tonight, don’t have time right now!

Mighty Retro Zero

This will be my next game, called “Mighty Retro Zero” (provisional name).

As you can see the player looks like a minimalistic and pixelated Megaman, and after the Keiji Inafune clone called “Mighty No. 9” well i decide put this name that can be changed in the future.

Here the last video featuring the Arkanoid based level:

Mr Sunshin aka sunrain – SummerGameJam

sunshinz

Mr Sunshin aka sunrain was created over the weekend for the SummerGameJam.

I’m pleased to say that all art assets used were created during the jam. Scripts were reused, but reworked.

Game Development Process

The process began with a felt sketch on white paper. A sunshine, or should I say – Mr Sunshine (later corrected to Mr Sunshin). Some character sketches were also produced but these were not used as reference. A felt drawing that Dolly drew was used for reference when modeling the player character  in Blender. Mr Sunshin was also modeled – with a range of shapes and tips.  Export models into Unity3d. Create scenes with models – add scripts and lighting.

Go back and produced digital paintings in GIMP, using the 3d scenes  as inspiration. This painting was added to the game.

After sleep and food – modeling in Blender took place again. This time it was to create some storm clouds and lightning. These were created and added to the game.

At this point I cleaned everything up, made sure it was working alright.

I had started to add a admission half way into the game – same idea as the title screen where you have to click (or even better – collide) to move onto the next level.

The game is very quick – each scene lasts 5 seconds, but that’s all you really need to experience. The camera can’t move, there is limited interaction anyway (only clicking to move characters).

I hope you enjoy the game.

IRS WARS “post campo version” TONS Of Bug Fixes!

Many people had trouble extracting and playing my game (i think putting jar files into rar files is what confused them :-) So i made a post-campo version. to get right in here is a cross platform jar file (this time i used the fat jar file creator to combine all 2 jars into one!) and for you windows imperialists (like me!) here is a windows exclusive version :-)

here is a list of bug fixes and new stuff:

  1. The “quit” button now works
  2. Game now correctly resets after death, fixing the “life after death” glitch.
  3. epic death animation for the x-wing star fighters
  4. even more epiccer death animation for you
  5. once that animation is over the most epicly written  quote is displayed (i wont spoil it for you)
  6. My game engine now supports text and alpha channels so… better graphics!

To counter all the peaple not knowing how to play my game i wrote a step-by-step (actually its not :-) guide for you (or is it?)

  1. press “play to play”
  2. most importantly, the sensitivity is pretty high, to turn tap the key very *gently*. like this: d :)
  3. press mouse to shoot
  4. killing them will gain you money, which is displayed in the right hand corner.
  5. press menu and a menu will slide up.
  6. press upgrade in the menu that just appeared to enter upgrade mode.
  7. if a location has a “x” over it, clicking that location will sell the tile at that location
  8. if a location has an “check” over it clicking on thaqt location will buy the selected tile and place it in the clicked location.
  9. near the top is a list of tiles you can buy (just by guns, and only guns) press one to select one. (selected one is displayed in top right corner)
  10. thats about it! thanks for your paciants ile update this if i remember more stuff :-)

thanks,

cute style. but unfortunately i dont have an android device so i cant play. Any chance you will upload a exe?

Is it allowed to use own built Level Editors in the LD?

Hi, first timer here, I am wondering if I am allowed to use a Level Editor that I have built myself, for the next upcoming LD? Or is that still considered ‘Part of the process’ that you create a level editor during the 48 hours?

The level editor was built from scratch by myself, and creates 2 files for the map (One for tiles, and one for collisions), which can be used in a game (Of course with the proper “loading the map” code).

I am wondering whether i should work on this some more, or just start from scratch again during the LD.

Also if it is required, I will also provide the source code to it with the game from the LD.

Thanks!

Game Template For Phaser Users

Hello everyone!

As it’s coming closer and closer to Ludum Dare, I decided to make a simple ‘Game-Template‘ (for Phaser) which allows the programmer to skip all the basic stuff, such as setting up their index page, getting there classes worked out, and even let’s you have a very basic character that can move up/down/left/right.

As per the rules, I am releasing this template, and the art in it (which was created by me) for free over on my github page.

If anyone who uses Phaser (which is an html5/javascript game framework, check it out if you haven’t) would like to use this simple starting template for the compo, feel free to. I would recommend that you are comfortable with Phaser, and using the state manager, however if you have any questions about it, I will be more than happy to answer them here on this post.

For any Ludum Dare veterans who see a problem with this (such as I made the template include to much, or something along those lines), please let me know by leaving a comment and telling me what the problem is. The art that is included in the template, is not intended to be used during the compo, you must make your own art/sounds/assets in order to follow the rules. The art is just there to show you it works.

Also, to any Phaser programmers, if you see anything that can be improved with this template, please let me know. I do not consider myself a ‘pro’ at Phaser in any way, so I’m sure I must of done something that can be done simpler. Thanks for the help, and I hope this benefits you!

Good Luck To Everyone Who’s Participating!

Jackton Factory: The Movie

Here’s a poster I made for a movie adaptation of my Ludum Dare 27 game, Jackton Factory. Of course, I have no plans to actually make this movie, but making the poster was pretty fun. I plan to include it in Spanner in the Works.

Jackton Factory: The Movie

How did they stretch 10 seconds into a feature-length film? Were there 700 characters?

On the subject of SitW, development is going pretty well. I ran into coder’s block for a couple of weeks, but I am very much back in action now. I’m currently working on making a level editor, which will be useful for me (Tiled is definitely not ideal for this game’s purposes!) and allow me to add Steam Workshop support. Eventually. Only time will tell if I’ll continue to run into inspiration problems for such long periods of time throughout the development process – I sure hope not.

Advice for struggling game dev

Hey I was wondering if anyone has some advice for me. I have wanted to make games for the longest time but have never really managed to make anything. I have plenty of crazy ideas. I am a pretty good coder. I have a friend who makes great art and i can make okay placeholder art. For some reason I can never manage to actually make a my own game. Either it goes on for a while and i lose interest/the idea starts to seem really bad, the game works partially and then it hits some sort of road block, or I just cant manage to organize everything well enough to get the game made. I was hoping that at least one of the indie develops who does ludum dares could point me in the right direction with some of their advice. Any advice would be great and if I ever manage to make a game I will ensure it is available to the entire community.

I am considering doing this ludum dare. Either compo alone or jam with my friend who does great pixel art. I am just not sure if I would be able to do it. Like I am not sure I would make something playable enough to post in the time limit. Also do to all the random distractions that come up it would cut my time back even farther. Just not sure I am capable of doing it expecially cause I have never really published a game before.

The question I always ask myself during a Ludum Dare weekend, but also during development outside LD: “What is the single most important thing missing from my game right now?” Work on that until it is no longer the most important thing. Then work on the next important thing, and so on.

What do you want to use from it? Here are my thoughts on it:

– A setting, a location, a character or other small pieces of meta content: That’s just fine in the compo.

– Part of the plotline, but interweaving it into your own story and telling it in your own words: Well, I guess that’s still fair play in the compo?

– Retelling the whole plot or using actual lines of text, independently of how many: Not compo anymore, consider taking part in the jam instead.

I am not really familiar with UK laws, (therefore this might be stupid), but would it be legal if you would call the game something like the name, but without copyrights (e. g. The Mysterious Affairs on Styles)?

Announcing jfxr: a tool to quickly make sound effects!

Ladies and gentlemen, in time for the next Ludum Dare compo, I bring to you: jfxr! It’s a browser-based tool to quickly generate sound effects for your games.

jfxr

Give it a try here – simply click the preset buttons on the left repeatedly to come up with new sounds. If you got something you like, fine-tune it with the many available options. Or if you know exactly what you’re going for, you can start from scratch, that is, the Default preset.

Jfxr should work in any recent version of Chrome and Firefox. Opera and MSIE users are out of luck because I can’t be bothered to test on those, and mobile devices might be a bit slow.

As you can probably tell, jfxr was heavily inspired by bfxr, but jfxr was designed to be more powerful yet more intuitive to use. It presents you with graphs of the most important parameters, so you can see what effects your edits have, and what modifications you need to do to achieve a particular result. I also find that jfxr’s randomized presets produce more useful output than bfxr’s.

I would love it if you would try it out! Please send any feedback my way via the issue tracker, or just comment on this post. Also, the source is fully open and should be fairly hackable (though I still need to clean it up a bit). Tip: you can easily share sound effects with others by clicking the Link button!

Looking for a team

For this Ludum Dare, I think I’ll go for a team!

What I can do:

Normally I ask people what they want done, Instead of what I can do, But I’ll write this anyway

  • Code (GameMaker/ENIGMA GML)
  • Music (soundcloud.com/oranebeast)
  • SFX
  • Graphics, Very terrible, But never the less they are graphics.
  • Design. (The ideas man. I can think with my brain at a mastery level)
  • Video Creation (Create some videos for people to see wtf your game is)
  • Team Spirit!
  • Odd Jobs (Y’know the types)
  • Level Design (Not very well, But still level design)
  • Other stuff I haven’t listed.

I feel I work well in a team, But my Timzone sometimes mess’ things up, (UTC+12)

I suggest you check out my creations in my profile menu.

So if you need me, Comment. Preferably close to my timezones, But you dont have to be.

sys.exit(“orane out”)

Hmm, have you considered the possibility of working with someone in UTC+0? If you’re never awake at the same time, it will be more like working shifts as opposed to ordinary teamwork. It might not work well, but it would be interesting to try. I myself am not in that timezone and am not looking to work in a team anyway, it’s just a suggestion.

I’ll be a team with you 😀 I myself am a very amateur programmer.

BoxFight!

Box Fight! is an upcoming game that will continue to grow over the years and is currently in…

Hey guys, great game over here that is looking for a community to help it thrive, taking fan ideas maybe implementing a doctor who class soon? hmm idk anyways there are links to submit ideas for classes on the home page of the wiki maybe one of you would like to make a difference in the game? credit is given for those who give ideas. Doctor who class could teleport to a random x & y maybe?, supernatural class could be only class with a shotgun, or maybe a sherlock class that has sherlocky abilities lol you guys get the idea.

This is the game i will be publishing for the october challenge that ludum put out btw guys 😀

I’me in!

As you can see by the title i’me in!

here a list of stuff I will be using (or trying to use):

Language: java, its good easy and i’me used to it.

IDE: NetBeans IDE, alot of people use eclipse SDK but:

  1. NetBeans is the official java IDE
  2. it can be installed with two mouse clicks

Game Engine: c4 Lazy Lib 2D, has tuns of customization and greatly improves java game dev. Also its made made by me :)

Graphics : paint.NET

arduino: jfxr

Thats pretty much it!!

I’m in!

Looking at some past LD’s, the I’m In posts probably won’t start naturally for several more days. I’m going to see if that’s because a lot of people don’t start visiting the website until close to LD or because they’d rather write their post when there are other people writing theirs by seeing if this post triggers an early start for the flow of “I’m in”s. It’s not a perfect experiment, but we’ll see what happens.

Anyway, this is my, what? Eighth LD? Wow, it is. I’ve participated in every single LD since #23, I wouldn’t miss one for anything. Almost. I guess I’d miss one for a million dollars, or for immortality, as long as it comes with eternal youth and health and a guarantee that humans won’t blow themselves up and leave me all alone. But I’m probably not going to be offered either of those things in the next 20 days.

Here are the tools I’ll be using:

  • Platform: Haxe with OpenFL yet again! I just don’t see how anything could be better. I like the language, it runs well on all of the platforms I export to and a lot of ones I don’t, and it’s got good libraries. Such as…
  • Engine: HaxePunk. HaxePunk has served me excellently in the past, and I’m actually making Spanner in the Works, my first large-scale game, with it, which has vector graphics. Go figure!
  • Sprite editor: Aseprite. Buy the $10 version. The only reason I didn’t is because I’m a cheapskate. You don’t want to be like me, do you?
  • Tilesetting: GoTile. I made this one! Whoopee! It’s totally free and stuff. Go get it, it’s sort of like AutoTileGen if it had been made in 2 days.
  • Text editor: Sublime Text 2. You know, this list is starting to look suspiciously… identical… to the one I posted last Ludum Dare.
  • Timelapse: gLapse again. But this time, I’ll turn the quality up higher. My last timelapse looked, well, disgusting. Because that’s what JPEG artifacts look like! Disgusting! Blech.
  • Streaming: Not doing it this time. Nope.
  • Sound: jfxr, made by our own Frozen Fractal and announced in the post right before this one! Let’s give him a round of applause for bringing us the third generation of Ludum Dare low-tech sound synthesizer software that really blows away both of the previous ones. Oh, and I’ll also possibly use Audacity. And maybe even LMMS, if I’m feeling bold.

So, best of luck to everyone! I don’t expect to get another medal (certainly not another gold one), but I do expect this to be a lot of fun, because that’s what prior experience would suggest. I’ll have to start going to bed at midnight and getting up at 8 a.m. by then, though, because going to bed at 1:30 a.m. and getting up at 11 won’t work for several reasons. So, let’s all make some games! (In 20 days.) Wahoo!

Tags: im in

I’m in!

The usual stuff- Java, Eclipse, some MSPaint and some GIMP. I’ll try to use JFXR as well (refer to a couple of posts before this one).

Now that that’s out of the way, a question- what happened to LD29? I mean, it still hasn’t showed up in the Recent Events box, and I can’t find the results page anymore.

I’m In, let’s not get sick and puke on my keyboard this time!

This will be my 2nd time attempting LD, last time (LD #29), I had gotten sick to the point of me laying in bed for 4 weeks.

I’ll be using:

Engine: Gamemaker, I’m quite new to game-dev, so I’ll use game-maker ;), fast and powerfull.
Programming-language: GML (Gamemaker language).
Sound: sfxr.
Music: If I get to it, FL Studio or something.
Graphics: Gimp/Paint.net
Vitamines: Loads, so I won’t be sick, AGAIN.

Have fun all, good luck. And make some games!

Good luck!

I’m in!

Going to try and use some boilerplate code to try and not get distracted by feature creep and the likes of it. I might go full monochrome with this one. We’ll see.

WE’LL SEE.

I’m in…again again again.

Another season, another ludum dare. This will be the fourth time I enter ( alas, the title ), so I expect to come last as usual. I have made many friends through ludum dare, and even some enemies ( looking at you 0creds 😀 ).

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libs: LWJGL and some custom stuff I’ll post closer to the time.

GFX: Paint.NET & Photoshop if needed.

SFX: SFXR as usual.

Other: OBS when streaming to Twitch.

I look forward to the coming weeks immensely. Good luck and have fun everybody.

I’m in.

Tools:

Dart

StageXL

Inkscape

SunVox

Chrome

I’m in with my Roku

This will be my first Ludum Dare. First time writing a game at all. First Roku application in two years.

I am eager to see how Roku evolved in this time and if I’m able to be creative enough to create something playable.

Another guy who’s in

Yes!

What I will use:

  • C# + XNA(and then make a monogame port after the initial 48 hours(probably))
  • Visual Studio 2010
  • MS Paint + RealWorld Paint (yes, I am serious. I need to learn how to make graphics I guess.)
I probably use inkscape if I learn it in time. Or Paint.NET. Whatever.
  • pixitracker. Or blipseq. Or sunvox. I’ll see.
  • SFXR / JFXR
  • My computer and all it’s peripherals
  • Internet
  • Food & drinks
  • Sleep
  • My brains

After the weekend it’s time for school again. Nice end of vacation! 😀

My brains?

Do you have more than one brain?

I am in! (looking for a team as well)

I just started doing HTML5 three weeks ago (and have been improving every day since) and I thought having a time limit/strict theme would be a fun challenge.

Language: Javascript/HTML5

Engine: Phaser

Sprites: Asesprite (free version, I am a horrible person)

Audio: Audacity

I would not mind teaming up with someone to do code/art, be warned, I may suck. – Prepare your butts

I’m using Phaser as well and I think you’ll find that doing a game jam makes you learn A LOT about the framework your using. Good luck with the jam!

I am in..

Hey everyone!

I decided to participate in competition first time, these are the tools I’ll use:

  1. Engine: own Glow3d game engine ( glow3d.com ) and own voxel engine library.
  2. Language: C++
  3. Textures: Adobe Photoshop
  4. Audio and music: freesound.org
  5. Modelling: 3ds Max or Blender

I have a question – as I am using own game and voxel engine, should it be open sourced to participate in main competition? Or shared as library to anyone who participate? It’s still not clear for me after reading rules.

Good luck to everyone!

If I remember right from however long ago I read it, it just needs to be publicly shared. Open Source is not required.
06. Aug 2014 · 09:19 UTC
It doesn’t need to be open source. For instance, ImpactJS is a game framework that costs 99$ to use, so obviously they wouldn’t want to have someone post the code in order to use it. Just make sure that whatever you use, others can as well so we can all start on the same ‘level’ to keep it fair.

I’m volunteer!

Hello hello. My name is Martin and I’m from Poland.

This is my tools:

Engine: Unity3D

Audio: FL Studio, brfx, my own

Graphics: Photoshop, gimp

Models: Maya

and some secrets 😉

Good luck for you! @McGameStudios

Missing Ludum Dare 30 :(

I realised that I am away the week that Ludum Dare 30 is on so I made a new game (my first game) and it’s free on Kongregate

Here’s the link:

Please play and rate and give me feedback because I really need it!

Thank you!

Congratulations on your first game, that is a fantastic accomplishment! Well done! I beat the first 25 levels then stopped. It was pretty fun. Since you asked for feedback, probably the two biggest things I noticed were:
04. Aug 2014 · 17:42 UTC
I really liked the game! Congratulations on your first! :D. I liked how the cube moving slow but was at a perfect speed balance with the rest of the game. There’s a little collision detection on the side of the spikes but its not major.
04. Aug 2014 · 22:53 UTC
It’s pretty tough at parts but really fun to! The idea is simple enough, but still engaging to keep me playing :)

Let’s do this!

Ludum Dare already right around the corner? Yea! Seems like the last one just finished!

This time I may be going at it alone! So I’ll have to shoot for the 48 hours and then fall back to the 72 hour jam once I realized that I, once again, underestimated how long it would take me to get something done (software right?).

Tools:

  • Unity 3D
  • Visual Studio 2013
  • Photoshop
  • Blender (if 3D)
  • Sound generators, my weakest area :(.

If I end up making a 2D platformer of some kind then it’s likely I’ll use my previously built PlayerController2D package. Besides that I might leverage any of the assets I’ve accumulated over the past year from the Unity asset store.

Exciting!

C.J.

I’m using Phaser as well, it’s a pretty good framework and it can be surprisingly powerful.

Doing it this year mabey

Doing the Jam with my friends. Only problem is that my new laptop arrives on the 28th.

If participating:

Language: Python

IDE’s: Geany, PyGame

Graphics: Gimp

Music: Musescore

Good Luck everyone!

I just found Musescore from your post, awesome looking software! Thanks and good luck!

Looks like we are in

As a friend, Steven and I are working on a game using Elm (http://elm-lang.org), we think it may be cool to try our learning in LD48. So if real life does not get us, we will be participating in the jam. As this is a new language, we want to see how far we can push it, using little assets as possible.

* Language: Elm, compiled to Javascript

* Editor: Sublime Text 3

* Graphic: Hm, Photoshop or whatever we need.

Also In

Somehow LD keeps coinciding with the time I can get off to visit my girlfriend. This time I’ve arranged it so that I can do both! I’m thinking I might go for some voice acting this time, but we’ll see. Most of my friends are too far away.

Unity for engine

Probuilder 2 for modelling (I just started in on it, it’s amazing)

Paint.net for sprites and textures.

Whatever is appropriate for audio.

First time doing a game jam!

Hey guys! I’m Stosswalkinator and this is my first LD48 or game jam at all! I’m very excited to do this.

Tools I will be using:

Unity3D

Programming: C# – MonoDevelop (or hopefully Visual Studio 2013, I’ve heard good things about the Unity tools coming out for it)

Art: Photoshop and PyxelEdit

Music: MuseScore and FL Studio 11

Streaming: Twitch (once I make an account and such)

Good luck to everyone and I hope we all learn a lot!

Hey all…

I am once again in for the ludum dare. Despite never being in the top one thousand i’m still going for top 100.

I will be using the language Java with the LWJGL/OpenGL library

Graphics: Paint.net

Ideas: My head

I am really bad at thinking up game ideas so i’m hoping i will think of a good one this time.

Good Luck!!

Ned :) :)

EDIT: Oh yea and i almost forgot. The IDE  that i will be using is IntelliJ :).

LD26 postcompo: Super Pyro Runner

Remember the 8 games I made for Ld#26? Probably not.  It was one of my crazy experiments. But it did lead me to implement some genres I’ve done too little. Like platformers.  I decided to take one of them (Roof Escape) and turn it into a bigger game.  It started as a tile engine test for my new HTML5/WebGL game framework (more about that in my “I’m in!” post), but after more than a week, it turned into a lot of fun (for me, at least).

The problem with endless runners is that you don’t always get to shoot.  This game tries to remedy all that by adding a flamethrower and loads of things to shoot at!  Just remember to use your triple jump! Soon to be released for browsers, Android, and Ouya:

Don’t worry what you use to make games. It’s all about creating stories, making your characters come to life, and having fun. Code in binary, or use a complete drag and drop program, it doesn’t matter, as long as what you use it what you’re comfortable with and it allows you to express yourself the best way possible.

Notepad++? highive bro 😀

Entering. I will even take a 3 leaf clover now to help.

So I’m in for my first try. Wish me luck… I have a few… um… yeah.

My glasses are out of date, I look over the top of them instead of through them a lot now. My head hurts. A whole weekend?

I’m an Australian so it’s 11am Saturday to 11am Monday times for me. Normally I would see that as an advantage, but my mother-in-law just HAD to have her 60th birthday party Saturday night :-(

Enough whining…

So, I will be using Unity, more as an exercise of learning (already doing practice projects and tutorials).

Thinking along the lines of the artistically deficient, I will probably go bad pixel art (good artists do it awesome), but that could change rapidly at announcement, so still toying with tools for that.

Sound, I have no ideas. I have a base guitar I haven’t even tuned in 5 years, that’s good royalty free music right? If I can pick a tool to make it work.

Comments

07. Aug 2014 · 13:16 UTC
Hey, just in case it needed clarification, in the Compo, the rule isn’t you can use royalty free stuff, but it’s you have to make everything yourself!

First Ludum Dare

For the first time ever, I will be participating in the Ludum Dare competition. 30th seems like a perfect opportunity too, don’t you all think? 😀

I’ve been conducting some experiments with 2D top-down view games recently, and will probably be sticking with that perspective unless the theme gives me a wildly different idea.

I’ll be using :
Engine : HaxeFlixel
Graphics : Photoshop
Music : FL Studio
Sounds : bfxr.

I’m also thinking of doing screen captures for a possible timelapse video afterwards. We’ll see how it goes!

Good luck y’all!

My game XParkour is now FREE!!!

Hello guys, if you didnt know I made a cool game called XParkour, and I sold it, but I realised it would be much better to give it out for free, so I did!

blv.me is a scam. Aint nobody got time fo dat!

If you want to earn money with your game, make one.

Not a small one, nor Minecraft 2, but a game where you put a lot effort in it. A game people like. A game you like.

For example XParcour *could* sell if you put just a whole more bunch of levels in it and polish it and make it pretty & more entertaining, with some cool stuff you like.

People will buy. Guaranteed.

Hopefully I will see a game of you some time again! Good luck.

LD 30 – I am in too.

Hello everyone!

It’s great to see many new people about. I’m in for my 6th time. So far I managed to finish only 2 games. Weirdly enough, both those games were completed during the summer LD (which is when I have most time on my hands). So hopefully I will manage to make it this time too.

As usual, my tools will be:

  • IDE: Game Maker: Studio
  • 2D Graphics: Paint, GIMP
  • 3D Graphics: Blender
  • Sound: Audacity, sfxr

In this past year, I have learned a lot in 3d programming and networking. So you can expect some awesome stuff I was unable to do the previous Ludum Dares.

Anyway, good luck to all of you! :)

My first time

So this is the first time I am going to participate in Ludum Dare :) (Kinda excited)

I first heard about Ludum dare 3-4 months ago through Quill18 and I instantly thought this would be an amazing way to learn a lot of new things.

I began to program about a half year ago, so I am not an expert in any way. (But I am not the worst)

I have spent the last 3 months programming a lot of small games, so I could get to learn Javascript/Unity better and I found out about a lot of things about programming/game development.

I did also finally realise that I am not an artist, so my Ludum Dare game is  probably going to be a 2D game, because that is what I feel I am least bad at.

I am going to use Unity to learn more about it and because it’s what i have practised in.

Music? Probably not:) It’s probably going to be a silent game with some small sounds from sfxr.

The reason I think this is that just like with the graphic I am not good at music :( So if I can’t find a site that makes some good sounding music i’m not going to use Music 😀

(Sorry for the bad grammar, i’m a dane) 😀

My first LD also. Are you doing the 48 hour competition or the 72 hour game jam thing?
09. Aug 2014 · 05:29 UTC
Honestly, if music is really not your thing, you might find something like ‘INudge’ or ‘BeepBox’ useful:

#SpeccyJam (the ZX Spectrum Game Jam) is back!

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the second annual #SpeccyJam is this month, and starts on 29th August 2014

Dev’s have 1 week (29th August – 5th September) to create a ZX Spectrum flavoured game.
It can be for any platform (Browser, HTML5, Flash, Mobile, iOS, Android, PC .. anything), and you can use any game dev tools to create it (doesn’t need to be programmed in machine code and load on a cassette tape or anything like that.)

Just as long as it looks / feels / plays like a ZX Spectrum game, then it is fine!

You must use only the ZX Spectrum colours and resolution, and you can use the “attribute clash” rules if you want to make it look more authentic (but not a strict rule).

For more details about rules and registration (by way of forum), check out http://www.speccyjam.com

Thanks for reading, and hope to see you there!
Cheers
Dave

I’m in! (preemptively)

So…yeah. This time I’m actually going to try and make a good game.

TOOLSET (until further notice, at least):

Engine: Love2D

Language: Lua

Editor(s): Vim and maybe Emacs (if I’m feeling lucky)

Streaming?: Fuck yeah! twitch.tv/segfault__

Unity Web Templates

Hey everybody!

So I got bored today and made myself some Unity Webplayer templates that use bootstrap (a little overkill maybe, but it works just fine.)

Anyways since some people may get a bit tired of the standard Webplayer templates or want something to add that little polish go ahead and use on of these guys! I did throw in a little attribution for myself at the bottom with a link to my twitter, but feel free to remove all of that if you want.

Preview

Dark | Light

Here’s the link to download the unity package: https://db.tt/mLPb3MNP

I personally prefer the darker theme, but maybe a light theme will be more appropriate for some games.

Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks,

Mactinite

I haven’t really developed for any competition before, but normally for games I use LWJGL, or a library I made for haxe. I really didn’t like the lack of control given with both haxePunk, and haxeFlixel, but maybe that’s just because I’m a control freak and like to micromanage the “behind the curtains” stuff of my games.
08. Aug 2014 · 15:12 UTC
Unity3D all the way for me. (Previously I also used AS3/Flashpunk, Python/pygame, C#/SFML.NET for prototypes/jams, but man, it’s just so much faster to make something in Unity3D.)

Another reason is i need flash platform to run game widly.

I’m in, for the first regular LD

Well, after experience with the latest miniLD I simply have to participate in this big one.

But now, I am going in with the team of people so I hope that we will do something much better than a Spaceship Arkanoid 😀

Development tools:

Editor: Notepad++/Visual Studio C++ 2010
Sounds: Bfxr
Music: abundant-music or whatever team comes up withGraphics: Adobe Photoshop
Libraries: SDL 1.2 (alongside with extensions), OpenGL, DGM (some basic functions to operate SDL and OpenGL easier and quicker, one day I’ll finish documentation and publish it)

Right now I am working on a simple level editor with collider edit functions. If it will be done in time, I am gonna publish it here for some coders like me with the proper algorithms to use it.

Best luck to everyone in upcoming LD!

I’m in etc etc etc

Hey, I’m in for the 30th Ludum, awe yeah!

As per usual I’ll be using SFML(C++, Visual Studio 2010) with my own codebase to speed things up a bit. I will post the lib later, haven’t tidied it up recently. For graphics I’ll use Graphics Gale, music I’ll use pxTone/Audacity and probably some SFXR.

The compo starts conveniently 2 days after an exam I have in a math course, so I’ll be exhausted and free from all the studying, AWESOME! Bad stuff is I recently came back from China, and I can’t for the life of me get my desktop computer to work.. Maybe it’s fixed before the compo but it doesn’t look like it.. I’ll just have to use my laptop like last time(I managed to make Under Ytan on my laptop, so I guess it isn’t too bad).

Who’s ready to make some mudd’fuggin games!?

I’m in! (For my first time)

Okay, so LD is a relatively new thing to me. And I’m not exactly sure what the point of these posts are, but I don’t really care I’m going to make one. So this is my first LD! Im going to be competing in the 72 hour jam one, and these are the tools I will be using:

Language: Haxe

Editor: Sublime text/Flash Develop

Sound Effects: Sfxr/Cfxr

Music(if any): Garage Band

Graphics: Gimp/Photoshop/Seashore

Like I said previously, this is my first LD. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also all tools listed here are subject to change.

Good luck!

I’m In? (Maybe not)

Yeah, I might do a LD project, but I am afraid that I may not have time. If I do, I’m just warning that it might be really small. So, don’t judge to harshly in the comments if it doesn’t have much polish. If you have a problem with the game, just specify what it is and how you think it should be fixed.

(Either way I will be able to play your awesome games, though.)

Looking at the award section, “don’t judge harshly” coming from you is a bit ironic. I really wish you’d remove that award; it’s rude and it makes you look bad.

I wish you told me what you didn’t like about me game(s) 😀 anyway hope you can participate :) Good luck! -Mallot1

Alright, we’ve both abused the trophies section enough, so I’ll say this here. Constructive criticism means criticism that suggests a way the person can improve themselves or their work. You essentially just said “Your games are terrible,” and didn’t say what was so bad about them or how he could improve them, which is NOT being constructive, not even evilly constructive. It’s just rude. If you had said “Your art needs work,” or something like that, it would have been constructive.

Okay, let’s stop this. I’m going to get rid of the trophy I gave you, but could you get rid of the one you gave me.

I’m in!

This will be my second Ludum Dare, so I wish myself and all other people luck.

I will use:

Python with PyGame for programming,

sfxr for sound effects,

Ninja as IDE,

Miscrosoft Windows XP Paint for graphic,

cx_freeze for compiling,

some-sites-that-I-don’t-know-for-now for music,

maybe(???) Tiled and tmx (by Richard Jones) for level desing,

Oxford Dictionary for searching for other meanings of theme,

and My Brain for… many things.

I also have one question:

why is on the oldest page on Ludum Dare (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/page/4132/ for now) comments have date August 2000 and Ludum Dare started 2002, also why oldest comment isn’t by PoV (who created Ludum Dare)?

Warmup for Ludum Dare by joining TAG Jam 13!

tag13Logo

Hello Ludum Dare community! Ludum Dare 30, a big number for it, is coming around soon! This month is also a big month for the The Arbitrary Game Jam with it’s one year anniversary, the first TAG being hosted August last year.

I invite all of you to come and join it! The whole idea behind TAG is that the winner of the last jam will host the next event, picking one of the themes that aren’t randomly generated and creating any bonus rules. This helps small and talented indie companies and game developers get traffic to their sites.

This month the TAG Jam is hosted by hilgames. The random themes are ‘Second Rate’, and ‘Cementation’, with the host chosen theme ‘Storm’

Yet another “im in post”

This will be my 4th ld! I think I will try to enter more than one game, a 2d game for the compo and a 3d one for the jam, but im not totally sure yet. if you want to team with me that would be awesome.

ENGINE: Unity3d or Cryengine, or both because 2 games.

AUDIO: audacity and music and jam maker.

GRAPHICS: Gimp

MODELING: Blender or MAYA

Like I said before, if you want to team up with for jam the that would be awesome. This ld  im hoping to bring my game much farther than just the jam.

Good luck!

If 2 games ends up being too much you could make a compo and jam version.

Joining in

Well, I guess it’s soon time for yet another Ludum Dare.

I’ll be trying to join in this time, even though it’s in the middle of the new-student period of the university. My job as part of the welcoming committee might drag me away, just like it did two LDs back, when I was out in a tent during the LD weekend.

Hopefully this time I’ll be able to find the time to get something done, so I’ll be trying to at least get the preparations of a game engine done before the theme gets released. Starting from scratch in C++ takes some traction before work gets done on the actual game after all.

I’ll be sticking to my usual toolset for this time too;

C++11, Visual Studio 2013 / GCC 4.7.3 / Clang 3.3, SFML git

Maybe I’ll have the time to work in scripting courtesy of Lua or AngelScript though, should help with development speed after all.

Hope to see many good games and good times, just like every LD before.

Obligatory I’m in

for my 6th LD!

I’ll be using:

  • Platform: HTML5
  • Language: Dart
  • Libraries: dartemis and whatever is available at pub and could be useful for the theme
  • base code: for setting up my workspace and some utilities for less boilerplate code
  • Graphics: Krita and/or Inkscape, depending on my needs
  • Sound: Audacity and maybe bfxr, but the last few times I just recorded stuff instead
  • a TODO list, because that worked out quite nice the last time around

[X] Obligatory I’m in (2 weeks before the compo)
[X] Have a checklist (2 weeks before the compo)
[X] Come up with an idea (~9 hours after start)
[X] Sketch the idea on a piece of paper (several ideas until I had an inspiring one)
[X] Implement the game
[ ] Create a winning/losing screen (didn’t have any energy left)
[X] Create a menu (a few hours before the deadline)
[X] Have a name (a few hours before the deadline)
[X] Write a description
[X] Post the game
[ ] Advertise the game
[ ] Write a progress report (didn’t have the time)
[ ] Write a Post Mortem
[ ] Play and rate at least 100 games

I like the checklist idea.

Oops!

Sorry, I forgot to state my software.

I will be using Python with Pygame for programming.

Paint and my awesome felt pen for art.

Audacity for sound effects and music.

Probably Py2exe to convert the file.

Maybe IcoFX to make an icon for the game.

Another rather “Clique” I’m in…

Hi guys, I kinda missed the last Ludum Dare, Unfortunately ;(. But this time I will remember.

Tools:

IDE: Game Maker(I am learning Java, although, not proficient enough to make a game “Yet”)

Text Editor: Game Maker One(A bit dull, But it will do)

Graphics: Paint.net(Very trusty :P)

Sound: BFXR

And I am also going to be using “KayZ”‘s list of things to do xD

Thanks KayZ for the list 😛

Good Luck to all, I wish you the best of luck.

I’m in (hopefully)

If everything goes right I’ll be doing my first LD ever

What I will be using:

Engine: Unity3D

Modeling: Blender

Audacity & nosoapradio.us  for audio

Language: probably C#

This is my first one so I’ll be happy if I even get to submit something game like

I wish everybody good luck !!!

Free Assets for Ludum Dare 30 (Jam Only!)

Lets try something new!

Share any freely available assets you make available in the comments. Art, Sound, Music, etc. Remember that the Compo is a solo competition, so assets found here are ONLY FOR THE JAM!

We’re in once again!

Hi there! This is our third Ludum Dare, and we’re feeling confident after our successful game last time, Turtle Simulator. We have made a framework to work off of, which you can fork here if you wish. Our tools of the trade this time are:

  • LÖVE 0.9.1 [engine]
  • Tiled [map editor]
  • GIMP [image editor]
  • Audacity / Psycle / sfxr [sound]
  • Brackets [text editor]
  • Bitbucket / git [code/issue management]

Let’s Go!

My days are slowly getting busier as sports and school approaches, along with video making which I have high demand for, but I should be able to make this Ludum Dare.  I will (should) be livestreaming the development of this Ludum Dare, as well!

  • Language: Java
  • Editor/IDE: Eclipse
  • Libraries: Will be made from scratch, or may use LibGDX if my idea applies to a mobile game!
  • Art: Paint.net
  • Sound: SFXR
  • Music: Like I’ll get to music 😉
  • Social: Livestream: Twitch.tv/codenmore  Twitter: twitter.com/codenmore

I’m hoping for a theme with a lot of potential!  Hope to see some of you drop by the livestream!

Im in

Im in, I think.

In for the second time

Hi there, I’m in again for the ludum dare 30! No much to say this time. You can see my previous game here: Greys

I’m going to use:

Language: Java

Library: Libgdx

IDE: Eclipse

Base Code: Probably I will use the Tile based- collision of my first game ever, that you can see here! Also you have the right to use any other code in my public repo.

Graphics: PyxelEdit and Inkscape

Sounds and Music: http://abundant-music.com/ , SFRX, Audacity.

First Game Ever, I Hope

Hello all! This is my first Ludum Dare, and the first time I’ve ever tried to make a video game. It was always a childhood dream to make games, so I figured I should give it a go. I’m giving myself the next two weeks to train before the main event. If I can make something that runs, takes input, and creates a result, then I’m doing alright.

I plan to use the following:

I’m having lots of fun learning, and reading about the tools everyone else is using has been a huge help deciding how to proceed. I’ll be blogging about my training daily at my own site.

Eh…no. I would strongly recommend NOT using GXSCC. It doesn’t really capture the sound of the system it imitates that awfully well, and even if it did, most people simply think of the NES when they think 8-bit. If you like the sound (which I personally don’t mind that much, but it’s still really off if you know what I mean), then go for it, but if you want something more authentic sounding, you should probably go for Famitracker (or if you want to sound REALLY old, Beepola works good for 1-bit music).

This is going to be my first Ludum Dare too!

it’s time to settle a controversy

how is Ludum Dare pronounced? I’ve heard tons of people pronounce this in slightly different ways and I want to get an idea of what the majority is. I’ve set up a straw poll here:

Please check in with your opinion so we can sort this mess out!

I’m in

. . because:

best reason to tidy

Tools:
Programming: Action Script 3 with Flashdevelop
Graphics: probably Flash or hand drawn if there aren’t many graphics.
Sound/Music: Reaper, VSTHost, Guitar with Zoom G3X, midi Drums, myC64 organ, my voice or anything else that has a cool sound.

Or if I feel brave enough (and have a clear and simple enough idea):
I’d like to make a C64 game (but then I will have not so many possiblities for making music)

I’m in for the (n+1)th time

I’ve got some ideas for games that I’ve been wanting to make for a while, so with a little luck the themes will line up with that. Failing that though I’ll just do what I always do: panic.

Tech:

  • ActionScript/Flixel (for the scripts)
  • GIMP (for the “art”)
  • Ableton Live (for the musak)
  • Open Broadcasting Software (so strangers can watch me accidentally type “pubic” a thousand times)
  • DAME (for the maps)
  • A Piece of Paper (for ideas)
  • A Tie (for professionalism)

Good luck equally to all the fresh-faced newbies and the grizzled veterans, let’s make it a good one.

I’m In

I’m in again. Will do my best to complete it this time around.

  • Language: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Framework: Phaser, or from scratch, depending on the theme
  • Graphics: Code generated and Photoshop
  • Sound Effects: Bfxr
  • Music: Fruity Loops

I noticed that LD29 is missing from the Recent Events box, and the only way to access the results is through Google or other events (by changing the URL).
