Advice for struggling game dev

Hey I was wondering if anyone has some advice for me. I have wanted to make games for the longest time but have never really managed to make anything. I have plenty of crazy ideas. I am a pretty good coder. I have a friend who makes great art and i can make okay placeholder art. For some reason I can never manage to actually make a my own game. Either it goes on for a while and i lose interest/the idea starts to seem really bad, the game works partially and then it hits some sort of road block, or I just cant manage to organize everything well enough to get the game made. I was hoping that at least one of the indie develops who does ludum dares could point me in the right direction with some of their advice. Any advice would be great and if I ever manage to make a game I will ensure it is available to the entire community.

It sounds like you might be trying to start a little too big.

Start small. Do not try to make the dream-version of your project at the beginning. Make prototypes.

Yeah I guess my projects do tend to get rather big. They definitely do not start as small as mixelman and normally they end up getting bigger before i have even stated coding them. Thanks for the advice. And .matrix I really love your last line. It is great.

I am considering doing this ludum dare. Either compo alone or jam with my friend who does great pixel art. I am just not sure if I would be able to do it. Like I am not sure I would make something playable enough to post in the time limit. Also do to all the random distractions that come up it would cut my time back even farther. Just not sure I am capable of doing it expecially cause I have never really published a game before.

I would ask you to join a team with me, but I don’t know if I will be busy. I will definitely play your game, though!

The question I always ask myself during a Ludum Dare weekend, but also during development outside LD: “What is the single most important thing missing from my game right now?” Work on that until it is no longer the most important thing. Then work on the next important thing, and so on.

Thanks for the advice all. I will try and make something and see how it goes. Gotta just work on things in the right order and keep working until I have something playable to post.

Here’s a rule question for you.

Can I enter a game based on an IP which is now in the Public Domain? Like if I wanted to make The Mysterious Affair at Styles, the game?

What do you want to use from it? Here are my thoughts on it:

– A setting, a location, a character or other small pieces of meta content: That’s just fine in the compo.

– Part of the plotline, but interweaving it into your own story and telling it in your own words: Well, I guess that’s still fair play in the compo?

– Retelling the whole plot or using actual lines of text, independently of how many: Not compo anymore, consider taking part in the jam instead.

I am not really familiar with UK laws, (therefore this might be stupid), but would it be legal if you would call the game something like the name, but without copyrights (e. g. The Mysterious Affairs on Styles)?

Dear Tosic: I have literally no way to contact you but commenting on your most recent post. I really hope you find this here.

Announcing jfxr: a tool to quickly make sound effects!

Ladies and gentlemen, in time for the next Ludum Dare compo, I bring to you: jfxr! It’s a browser-based tool to quickly generate sound effects for your games.

jfxr

Give it a try here – simply click the preset buttons on the left repeatedly to come up with new sounds. If you got something you like, fine-tune it with the many available options. Or if you know exactly what you’re going for, you can start from scratch, that is, the Default preset.

Jfxr should work in any recent version of Chrome and Firefox. Opera and MSIE users are out of luck because I can’t be bothered to test on those, and mobile devices might be a bit slow.

As you can probably tell, jfxr was heavily inspired by bfxr, but jfxr was designed to be more powerful yet more intuitive to use. It presents you with graphs of the most important parameters, so you can see what effects your edits have, and what modifications you need to do to achieve a particular result. I also find that jfxr’s randomized presets produce more useful output than bfxr’s.

I would love it if you would try it out! Please send any feedback my way via the issue tracker, or just comment on this post. Also, the source is fully open and should be fairly hackable (though I still need to clean it up a bit). Tip: you can easily share sound effects with others by clicking the Link button!

Looking for a team

For this Ludum Dare, I think I’ll go for a team!

What I can do:

Normally I ask people what they want done, Instead of what I can do, But I’ll write this anyway

  • Code (GameMaker/ENIGMA GML)
  • Music (soundcloud.com/oranebeast)
  • SFX
  • Graphics, Very terrible, But never the less they are graphics.
  • Design. (The ideas man. I can think with my brain at a mastery level)
  • Video Creation (Create some videos for people to see wtf your game is)
  • Team Spirit!
  • Odd Jobs (Y’know the types)
  • Level Design (Not very well, But still level design)
  • Other stuff I haven’t listed.

I feel I work well in a team, But my Timzone sometimes mess’ things up, (UTC+12)

I suggest you check out my creations in my profile menu.

So if you need me, Comment. Preferably close to my timezones, But you dont have to be.

sys.exit(“orane out”)

Hmm, have you considered the possibility of working with someone in UTC+0? If you’re never awake at the same time, it will be more like working shifts as opposed to ordinary teamwork. It might not work well, but it would be interesting to try. I myself am not in that timezone and am not looking to work in a team anyway, it’s just a suggestion.

BoxFight!

Box Fight! is an upcoming game that will continue to grow over the years and is currently in…

Hey guys, great game over here that is looking for a community to help it thrive, taking fan ideas maybe implementing a doctor who class soon? hmm idk anyways there are links to submit ideas for classes on the home page of the wiki maybe one of you would like to make a difference in the game? credit is given for those who give ideas. Doctor who class could teleport to a random x & y maybe?, supernatural class could be only class with a shotgun, or maybe a sherlock class that has sherlocky abilities lol you guys get the idea.

This is the game i will be publishing for the october challenge that ludum put out btw guys 😀

I’me in!

As you can see by the title i’me in!

here a list of stuff I will be using (or trying to use):

Language: java, its good easy and i’me used to it.

IDE: NetBeans IDE, alot of people use eclipse SDK but:

  1. NetBeans is the official java IDE
  2. it can be installed with two mouse clicks

Game Engine: c4 Lazy Lib 2D, has tuns of customization and greatly improves java game dev. Also its made made by me :)

Graphics : paint.NET

arduino: jfxr

Thats pretty much it!!

I’m in!

Looking at some past LD’s, the I’m In posts probably won’t start naturally for several more days. I’m going to see if that’s because a lot of people don’t start visiting the website until close to LD or because they’d rather write their post when there are other people writing theirs by seeing if this post triggers an early start for the flow of “I’m in”s. It’s not a perfect experiment, but we’ll see what happens.

Anyway, this is my, what? Eighth LD? Wow, it is. I’ve participated in every single LD since #23, I wouldn’t miss one for anything. Almost. I guess I’d miss one for a million dollars, or for immortality, as long as it comes with eternal youth and health and a guarantee that humans won’t blow themselves up and leave me all alone. But I’m probably not going to be offered either of those things in the next 20 days.

Here are the tools I’ll be using:

  • Platform: Haxe with OpenFL yet again! I just don’t see how anything could be better. I like the language, it runs well on all of the platforms I export to and a lot of ones I don’t, and it’s got good libraries. Such as…
  • Engine: HaxePunk. HaxePunk has served me excellently in the past, and I’m actually making Spanner in the Works, my first large-scale game, with it, which has vector graphics. Go figure!
  • Sprite editor: Aseprite. Buy the $10 version. The only reason I didn’t is because I’m a cheapskate. You don’t want to be like me, do you?
  • Tilesetting: GoTile. I made this one! Whoopee! It’s totally free and stuff. Go get it, it’s sort of like AutoTileGen if it had been made in 2 days.
  • Text editor: Sublime Text 2. You know, this list is starting to look suspiciously… identical… to the one I posted last Ludum Dare.
  • Timelapse: gLapse again. But this time, I’ll turn the quality up higher. My last timelapse looked, well, disgusting. Because that’s what JPEG artifacts look like! Disgusting! Blech.
  • Streaming: Not doing it this time. Nope.
  • Sound: jfxr, made by our own Frozen Fractal and announced in the post right before this one! Let’s give him a round of applause for bringing us the third generation of Ludum Dare low-tech sound synthesizer software that really blows away both of the previous ones. Oh, and I’ll also possibly use Audacity. And maybe even LMMS, if I’m feeling bold.

So, best of luck to everyone! I don’t expect to get another medal (certainly not another gold one), but I do expect this to be a lot of fun, because that’s what prior experience would suggest. I’ll have to start going to bed at midnight and getting up at 8 a.m. by then, though, because going to bed at 1:30 a.m. and getting up at 11 won’t work for several reasons. So, let’s all make some games! (In 20 days.) Wahoo!

I’m in!

The usual stuff- Java, Eclipse, some MSPaint and some GIMP. I’ll try to use JFXR as well (refer to a couple of posts before this one).

Now that that’s out of the way, a question- what happened to LD29? I mean, it still hasn’t showed up in the Recent Events box, and I can’t find the results page anymore.

I’m In, let’s not get sick and puke on my keyboard this time!

This will be my 2nd time attempting LD, last time (LD #29), I had gotten sick to the point of me laying in bed for 4 weeks.

I’ll be using:

Engine: Gamemaker, I’m quite new to game-dev, so I’ll use game-maker ;), fast and powerfull.
Programming-language: GML (Gamemaker language).
Sound: sfxr.
Music: If I get to it, FL Studio or something.
Graphics: Gimp/Paint.net
Vitamines: Loads, so I won’t be sick, AGAIN.

Have fun all, good luck. And make some games!

Good luck!

I’m in!

Going to try and use some boilerplate code to try and not get distracted by feature creep and the likes of it. I might go full monochrome with this one. We’ll see.

WE’LL SEE.

I’m in…again again again.

Another season, another ludum dare. This will be the fourth time I enter ( alas, the title ), so I expect to come last as usual. I have made many friends through ludum dare, and even some enemies ( looking at you 0creds 😀 ).

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libs: LWJGL and some custom stuff I’ll post closer to the time.

GFX: Paint.NET & Photoshop if needed.

SFX: SFXR as usual.

Other: OBS when streaming to Twitch.

I look forward to the coming weeks immensely. Good luck and have fun everybody.
