Ludum Dare 45

Games that shouldn't be in first and why its a bad topic

One of the themes in today voting is ‘Games that shouldn't be in first person done in first person’ and it’s possibly the worst game jam theme I have ever seen.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea, it has so many cool possibilities but it also destroys the idea of ludum dare and game jams in general.

Let’s face it, first person is hard. It requires you to be able to work in 3D such a lot of jammers don’t know how to , every one in construct and game maker just got ruled out. But even for those of us requiring 3D just adds extra technical challenge that many won’t want to face.

But it’s not just technically more difficult, it also places massive limitations and challenges on design. Instantly any normal type of first person is out, shooters, platformers, walking simulations, board and card games. Finding something that isn’t first person, can be made into first person and is still fun seems almost impossible.

Personally I just see this as a topic that is far to challenging and far to limiting and far to limiting and will result in less people went wrong and less people completing.

That been said there is another part of me that would like to see the mayhem it creates. It’s a fantastic idea, I just don’t think it works in this context.

But what do you think? What ideas for this topic have you come up with so far?

IM IN

I accidentally posted twice so im converting this to my im in post. I think the last time I competed was 2013 or 2014, anxiety and depression has been stopping me from doing it again. But I decided no more and ill be joining in the fun this weekend.

Im in (Proper post)

So after not competing for six years i'm finally competing again. This will be my second time in the 48 hour and fourth overall.

One thing I really wont to work on this time around is Art, Design and music.

Ill be using - Unity - Photoshop - Logic Pro X - SFXR - A bunch of energy drinks

My plan for each day is as follows

Ill be spending all Thursday setting up, making sure I have my assets ready, installing software, possibly setting up streaming. Friday I have meetings all day so that. Saturday I want to get my core concept and game play down pack Sunday ill be working on art, music and non essential features. Monday I have a meeting the runs through the last 3 hours of the comp sigh so ill have to get everything finish early Sunday morning and then ill spend Monday avo fixing bugs. Tuesday ill focus on porting from windows to web, mac and hopefully mobile as well.

Hopefully it all goes well and I look forward to competing with y'all.

Progress so far

So my concept is a platformer where the game starts with nothing. You start with nothing (No character) and then get more as you go, character, platforms, enemy, sounds, backgrounds, etc.)

The first 5 / tutorial levels are done, they add character, platforms, enemy, camera movement in that order. The basic needs for playing the game.

After that you will unlock something random each time, to give it some replayablity.

I have about 11 hours left I can work on this and need to finish: - Loading the change level scene - play level button - triggering sound effects - re spawning character when out of bounds.

after that I would like to get some more upgrades in.

I was really hoping to do my own sound and graphics but I dont have time.

I Finished!

In under 36 hours I made a gaame, and Im happy with that. Theres alot more I would have liked to have done but im proud of myself.

Good luck everyone, I can wait to play your games.

AGameWhereTheGameStartsWithNothing Update 1.1!

It wouldn't be a jam if you didn't have to fix your crappy hacks.

Turns out on unity in HTML5 you cant change the playback position of an audioclip after its playing so I had to swap the order of two lines of code.

Also apparently saying 'push the anykey' while requiring it to be held for two seconds not just pushed was a bad idea.

Always good to learn from mistakes, next LD: more user testing.

==CHANGE LOG== v1.1 - Fixed music resetting on HTML5. - Fixed level not resting on Levels 3-5 - Changed 'USE THE ANY KEY' to 'HOLD THE ANYKEY' to avoid confusion.

Looking for web games with no sound.

So im currently testing games on a spare compute, I just can run .exe's on it and its sounds broken.

Hit me with some sound free web games.
