LD26

Good luck to you all!

Hello guys and girls, Ninjaxio here. I’m a bit of a newbie to the Ludum Dare compo, and I figured I’d enter! Good practice, I’d say! I wish you all good luck!
Tools of the Trade:

  • Construct 2
  • GIMP
  • Paint.NET
  • Wacom Bamboo Splash
  • Sheer Brainpower

Hope you all do well!

Oh noes…

For a newbie, this isn’t exactly the best theme for me. Minimalism? (sigh) Guess I better get to work, then…

Take this as a good excuse to not work on graphics very much! That’s what I’m doing!

Ooh, workworkwork!

Backdrop

Totally finished what might be the backdrop for my game. Geebus, I don’t really know what it is. Some kind of odd…city…thing. Welp, off to work!

Okay, I can do this.

Worked my arse off till 4 AM, in which I fixed some last minute problems, and hit the hay. Sadly, I think I slept a little too long, as I hadn’t woke up till 10 AM. Fudge. While I may be behind on time, I have most of what I need done, not too far to go, so hopefully I can wrap this up quick.

I see minimalism as just, like, simple gameplay, maybe simple in the graphics department, but still, something that is simple. In other words, minimalistic gameplay. The game I’m making is a sort of high score based shooter, in the style of games like Defender, though more colorful and strobe-like xD

Pixel Buster

^ There’s a screenie.

Now, back to work!

Almost There..

I guess I will post my game in a bit. I want to really polish it, and there’s some sort of sound bug I’ve been trying and trying to squash. If I don’t get that out of the way, I may end up having it uploaded with odd sound glitches. Really hoping I can get these fixed and overall polished till then.

About the game. The game is called Pixel Burst, and it’s pretty minimalistic, gameplay-wise.

I guess I should describe it this way.

You fly around in a city with seizure-filled skies, blasting the crud out of dull and boring people with your colorful and fun projectiles.

That’s it in a nutshell! It doesn’t really have multiple levels, or anything of the sort, as it’s more of a high score centric game. Like in arcades, where you wanted the high score. Like that. After the compo, I might consider expanding on it.

Game is Done!

Finally, it’s done. Everything should be find, ‘cept for the music. I still don’t know how to fix that. Sounds are just too glitchy right now.  Hopefully it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Anyhoo, game is called Pixel Burst, it’s about shooting boring and dull people with your fun and colorful rectangles. Hope you enjoy! Very basic, arcade style. Try to beat your previous scores. Had much fun for my first Ludum Dare, now I wish to practice for the next!

Ludum Dare – Afterthoughts

Well, Ludum Dare is over, and I guess I’ll post my thoughts.

Ludum Dare is the most fun I’ve ever had making a game, for sure! Despite not being with people in real life, you still feel connected with the other participants, and it’s really a great way to get to know people, and make a game at the same time! Knowing that there’s other people going through some of the same obstacles and problems you’re going through, and giving out ideas and just speaking freely- that’s great. I am DEFINITELY going to be in the next one. This was certainly a great experience for my first LD.

Thanks for such a great experience!

Last Minute Question…(sorry)

While I did enjoy our Ludum Dare, I just want to know something. Not sure if I am even allowed to waste a post on a question, but…if I’m not, I apologize.

I finished my game, yet sounds are broken. Since it’s past the deadline, can I reupload a version with fixed music and sounds? Or do I have to wait until judging is over? Or can I do it at all?

Thank you.

Fixing something that was already in the game, but was broken for some reason, is generally okay. For transparency’s, you could mention it on the game page.

I would consider that a bug fix. Which IS covered by the change agreement. So yes. Go right ahead. (If you can, just edit your original post.) I will be looking forward to seeing your game when you upload it again.

People usually do this, but not as a replacement for their competition submission. Instead, they reupload the file under a different header, usually something like “Post-Compo” in which they make changes. You leave what you finished during competition time up and that is what people judge. This new version is just an alternative like, “If you like my submission and rated it well, I’ve updated it and it’s even better now if you want to try”.

Oh, I didn’t realise it was fixing sound as opposed to adding it in. If it’s just broken, I’d say it’s probably okay to fix. I would mention it though, in the description, just in case.

Ludum Dare 26 – The Aftermath.

Okay, so, I’d just like to say I had a BLAST for my first Ludum Dare, and I’m totally happy with my scores, as I got better than I thought I did.

#423 Fun 3.13 #477 Graphics 3.13 #521 Audio 2.76 #548 Mood 2.89 #721 Overall 3.00 #956 Theme 3.09 #1153 Innovation 2.20 #1471 Coolness 44%

So I got #721 out of 1610 games, which is just FANTASTIC. I really didn’t think I’d get anywhere above 1000, but I did! Many thanks, really. Now, it appears the section(s) I ranked the highest in were Fun and Graphics. The “fun” factor was what I was definitely focusing on, and I’m glad it worked out. Pixel Burst’s fast-paced arcade style gameplay is great for short spurts, heck, I find myself going back to play it a few times to see just how many points I can rack up :3

I’m surprised on the graphics side, as I just wanted to convey a retro feel, but nothing fancy.

The fact that Theme and Innovation were towards the end wasn’t too shocking for me, because I admit, I was having a little too much fun, and I forgot to actually focus on the theme ^_^’

Anyhoo, I think I did great for my first Dare, so, many thanks to you all for such a wonderful time! Congratulations to the winners!
