Rating games is difficult

Honestly, some of the games I've rated are quite easy, but I've run in to quite a few games where humor isn't really part of the game (nor do I think it was supposed to) but the Humor rating is still there. It kindda sucks because I don't like giving a game a low rating if it's fun to play. But it's not like the game attempts humor in any way.

Of course there's the flip side, where people will put up 2 or 3 categories, when the rest easily could apply. I don't know if it's because of copyrighted material or whatnot but still! it's aggravating that you can't choose which categories should apply to other peoples games (I'm sure there's cases where this could be abused though :/ )

Hyped for LD51

Finally had some decent ideas for a theme to suggest... Though I still like the words "Jiggly wiggly" :/ I just can't imagine what to make from it, except a jelly simulator or smth.

Screenshot 2022-09-17 123459.png

I'm currently browsing and looking at various game engines/programs to find one that I like better, but so far none of them has really caught my attention :(

I'd love an engine/framework/something that really allows you to handle text in a creative manner, but so far all I've found has been the same kind of print text to screen. No animation or transformation like skewing.

No game idea.

Holy shit, like usually I can think of something from a prompt, for almost anything, but this time.... I. AM. COMPLETELY. BARREN. FOR. IDEAS. I just don't want to do some kind of timer mechanic, but honestly I can't think of anything else for this theme (and I also did some kind of time mechanic for my LD50 game) :( Does someone else have ANY ideas for how to interpret this prompt?

I might just end up submitting a game that's pressing a button to prevent a timer from reaching 0 seconds -_- fml...

LDJAM web player is not working :(

I dunno about anyone else, but not only did I have alot of trouble uploading my game to the website, but I haven't been able to play any games on here either :( I've had to use itch.io myself (which is fine btw, not like it matters) and I've had to either download/play on a different website.

I use firefox, does anyopne else have the same experience? what about people using Safari or chrome? :/

Here's to a better jam theme and a better developer in 2023

resultsLD51.png

I really, REALLY, didn't care for the theme "every 10 seconds". Which is at least partially why I ended up making the kind of game that I did. It was just intended to make fun of the theme and make fun of how inspiration less it made me feel.

At least most people thought it was funny too, which is honestly just primary school all over again. If you can't make something brilliant then make something that makes people laugh. I can't really say that I disagree with the score, the game ended up getting.

It was certainly a very juvenile and cynical game, it was basically me doing this:

a7123b9098d7da88f4489035f8076843-1241549588.gif

And to some extent I think I need to outgrow this, it's not conducive to become a better artist and developer, or just as a person in general, if I just continue to make mean spirited and pessimistic art. At the same time I don't know where else to go?

Am I just an angry old fucking idiot? Can I change? should I change? isn't there plenty of reason to be fucking angry?... Definitely questions I need to work on.

ON A POSITIVE NOTE:

It was really interesting learning Godot during the weekend as well, it has a really interesting approach, though I'm not sure that it's actually THAT fundamentally different. Like it seems that the scenes are just another word for a composition class and so on... either way, it won't be the last time I work in Godot, especially since yoyogames has gone over to the subscription model and the CEO of Unity has revealed himself to be a massive dickhead. (I do not hold it against other developers who use these engines btw. this is just my principled stance).

I do like a lot of the built in features in Godot, especially the text handling using bbcode to do animation and effects and so on. Definitely looking forward to 4.0!

Also, see ya all in January for LD52!

I DID IT!

index.512x512.png

oh my god... what was i thinking???? O_o This is definitely a much more ambitious try than my last two. But holy hell... WHAT! A! NIGHTMARE!

The code is a mess but it runs and works.

now people just need to start to sell people :)

Also I really want to write some kind of postmortem about this game, I do genuinely think it could work, but for now this is definitely a lot more of a concept piece than a finished game.

Also, the embedding is... ehm.... not working as intentioned :/ so just go and download it The game page

And the results are in........

Thanks to all who played and rated :D

Really happy with the innovation rating especially! Also a really big thanks to @papabirb who was gracious enough to help me with some corrections in regards to screen scaling in Godot.

I do think that if I had fixed the screen scaling issue, it would have been rated slightly higher overall, alas... now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

Also really happy with the humor rating :D per usual I DO try to have fun dialogs n' stuff in there.

I have also thought about using some of my ideas from LDJAM 50 (named Jobbie, yes it's a shite name :P). I have some more ideas for an immersive sim kindda game where you work for a soulless company and both of those games have elements I want to incorporate.

For all the other entrants: GREAT JOB AND CONGRATS FOR THE RATING :D

See you all at the LDJAM - 53 B)

I'm in

also, I'm using Godot 3.5, 'cause I don't trust 4.0 yet :P

Sweet Caroline how do you do it?

I don't understand, how anyone can look through 2600+ theme ideas... this is madness.

Nah... I'm out, see ya for LD54

Sorry to say I haven't been able to get anything done, I've been dealing with massive headaches and being very tired for the entire weekend. I don't really want to make a game for the Extras since barely anyone pays attention to that category (don't really understand why it's here... :/ )

It feels like I've let stress built up from my full time job, and it really fucking sucks :( But alas that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes -_-

Btw.. I'm still gonna play games and give feedback :)

Ludum Dare 54

I'm in, otherwise I won't be able to complain about the theme

As the title says, I'm in. let's see if I can't make something, something game related.

Right now I'm trying to come up with ideas for all the ideas that are being voted on.

oh also I'm using Godot 4 and Aseprite and probably Reaper/LMMS

limited space? I hardly knew her!

Ok so my idea is actually pretty basic, you're a data compressor, you have to make a string text be no bigger than the allowed space.

However you must also be able to extract the same text from the compressed data at the end. HOPEFULLY that'll be challenging and fun! :P

What is this? a game for ants?

Screenshot 2023-10-01 005559.png

Ok so I kindda have an idea for a gameplay loop and stuff, the game is probably gonna be called something like "Encoder bot" or something like that.

The question is: Should the player grab letters to decode a binary sequence OR grab binary numbers to encode... or both ? :O

It's gonna revolve around encoding text to make it fit, maybe you should store and then send out the signal? hmmm I need to figure out what I'm gonna do... (also this is for the Jam, NOT compo, seriously the compo is crazy! mad probz to y'all doing the compo!)

Also Imma go to bed now

the game is dead long live the game

Screenshot 2023-10-02 175628.png

ok, honestly, my previous idea was pretty neat, but halfway through yesterday, I just had to shelf it, it was very incohesive and I kept making changes to the gameplay loop which is not a good sign.

However I did come up with something that still smells of the original idea and is easier to convey IS a game and hope fully I can finish in time :P

All the themes are bad, all the themes are good

Hey just a reminder. If you think the theme we end up with is good, then you're wrong, it's actually the worst theme ever. If you think the theme is terrible then you're wrong, there's so many ways to interpret it. This has been a public service announcement
