This is my first jam!

Even though I've been working in games for a while, this is my first jam. It's kind of scary, but I hope to be able to do something interesting (and be able to finish it!). My intention is to do something with Unity.

Good luck everyone on your projects!

Making some progress!

There's still not too much to see, but I finished the movement of the player. You move through a grid in first person. Kind of like 1st person dungeon crawlers.

Ok, 8am, I should probably go to sleep now.

But hey, I've got really nice progress on the visuals. I would like to add tons of details to my cyberpunk low poly city, but I don't think I'll have too much time for the rest of the game.

Gameplay is mostly done!

But still quite a lot to do.

You arrive to a dystopian city with no nature anywhere. You manage to accquire the only unbuilt land in the city and you decide to create your own garden while listening to some synthwave.

Almost done!

Just polishing details here and there!

City Gardener post mortem.

Hey everyone! So these are the results for my first game jam!

I won't lie, I didn't expect so big numbers in Fun and Theme. But from what I see in some comments and from people playing, I think I didn't manage to properly explain the mechanics. This is what I think it happened:

  • A lot of players just kept waiting for plants to grow instead of planting and watering a bunch at the same time. So the game for these players was very slow and they didn't manage to fill even one third of the board. My intention was to have the player to run fast all over the place to grow as many plants at the same time as possible so in the end you can fill most of the board while trying to not get blocked by your own trees. And since people only managed to grow very few trees, the game didn't give that sensation of "Running out of space".

  • Another issue were the controls. Making dungeon crawler controls seems to have not been the best idea. A lot of players considered them difficult or confusing, so that could have spoiled the fun. Maybe implementing traditional FPS controls would have been better.

However, I'm really glad with the Graphics and Mood categories. I like the neon / cyberpunk style so I wanted to create something like that and I put a lot of effort there, writing custom shaders for buildings and the animated neon lights, modeling and texturing all the props, the lighting and post-processing, etc. I'm really glad that people enjoyed the setting.

Being my first game jam, I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish something in three days, but I'm very proud of what I managed to do.

I hope to improve my skills and do a better game for the next jam. You know, always learn and try to improve yourself and, of course, have fun!

And last but not least, congratulations to everyone. There are a lot of amazing games here that I really enjoyed and deserve great scores.

So, see you next time!
