LD and Support

My boyfriend mentions LD every time it comes up and he never actually tries it. So finally, I said I would give it a shot if I could find software that helped with the coding side (I am not a programmer and have only rudimentary knowledge of HTML). I think he thinks this is a challenge and he realized if I was going to try that he had to man up and do it as well. Mostly, though I’m doing this to give him motivation. Just as he supported my attempts to write a novel in 30 days (I was successful) I want to support his attempts to write a game in 2 days. Additionally, this will motivate anyone who thinks they can’t. Because really, if someone with no programming experience can pull something together, you talented folk have no excuses. Here is my declaration of what I will be using.

  • Game Maker 8.0 Lite (game will definitely be 2d)
  • Graphics: Game Maker Graphics editor and maybe Photoshop
  • Music: Musgai
  • Sound: sfxr
  • Libraries: None
  • Other Tools: Oxygen 8 Midi Controller (to really make some good music), lots of blueberry tea, pandora for music (probably final fantasy stuff) and lots of cookies.

Happy Game Developing!

World Map and Progress

Since it turns out I’m super ambitious and I’m making an RPG, I decided to begin by working on many different sprites (I’ll use an array to make inventory and will need a craft ability). So, here is the world map. It’s a bit out a scale, but there is one dungeon, one mine, one forest/field place and a city. Feeling good even if I haven’t started any actual “coding” or whatever you’d call using Game Maker/Construct. I’m taking a short break. I do have to work tomorrow but I think if I work hard I can finish most of the graphics.

Besides the world map all I have to show are these tiles. Thankfully I’m using Construct (similar to Game Maker) so the actual programming is unnecessary. Going to work on town and try to get all the different maps made. Before bed tonight I will also try to get the shop working and the inventory array functional. Tomorrow will be music, health, combat and tweaking. At least ideally. Again, the game is an alchemy game with two possible ways to “win.” It’s all about discovering the recipes and the secrets of alchemy.

LD #21 – I’m IN!

My boyfriend and I have decided to do the Jam this time. I’ll be taking over graphics and sound while he does the actual game development. I believe we will be using Torque2D, sfxr, musagi, and a variety of graphics program that may include GIMP, Photoshop, and whatever else he has on his machine.
