LD 38

Let's do this.

Due to it being my birthday during the event, I thought that I would buy myself a new keyboard (more specifically, one that doesn't make a sound so that I don't wake anyone one at 2:00am) and a new graphics tablet. This time around, I have prepared with a schedule so that I know exactly what I am doing and how long I shall spend on each section of development (including coffee breaks).

Tools I will be using: Art: Paint.NET Sound: FL Studio / Audacity Development Environment: Game Maker: Studio Professional Edition I was going to use C++ with Code::Blocks but I am still learning how to fully use the language to a high enough extent to program graphical content efficiently and quickly.

Good luck to everyone else, let's have some fun and make some games!

Stuck between choices. Help?

Here is what I have so far. I am happy with both ideas but I don't know what to pick.

  • A shrinking world of which the player must fix. Every time the player dies the world shrinks? The size of the world will be determined by the progression of the player. e.g. A set of tasks will allow the player to expand the world and access new resources. Instead of controlling a single character, the player will create a tribe of sorts (workers, farmers, etc.).

  • Eternal Terrarium idea? Growing a world inside a jar. By adding different species to the jar, the outcome will be different. The aim of the game would be to complete tasks each time you play. These tasks could be: . Get 5 species of worms to thrive . Start a colony of ants . Grow a plant to the top of the world Completing a set of tasks would allow the player to pick a larger jar next time?

Which idea should I pursue?

Finally!

I have finally finished. How I managed to make a game with an illness, school work and exams crammed in between I will never know. I am not completely happy with the game itself. Not all of the gameplay elements that I wanted were implemented and there are more than a few bugs. But hey, that's Ludum Dare right?

Due to the fact that it is late and I have school tomorrow, I had to rush a quick description, but I will update it asap. If you want to check out my project (I am going to refrain from calling it a game), you can check it out at: https://pixelformedstudios.itch.io/a-very-small-planet or at: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$16019

Not Submitting

Due to the fact that I was ill and didn't have enough time to fully piece together a game, I have decided to remove my game from judging. My game so far works to an extent, but has many frustrating errors and bugs. When I went to debug these, I found that they were caused by my lack of organisation and messy programming. However, I really do like the direction of the project and when I get time away from school, I will completely re-do the project, organizing my scripts and such as much as possible.

As a side note, I hope that everyone else had a well polished outcome. Despite my failure, I am proud to say that I have never had as much fun developing a concept ever.

Fixed some bugs

The game is nowhere near finished, but an early concept. I hope to polish and finish this game as I really like the whole feel of the game when I was creating assets for it. You can find it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/a-very-small-planet

Development So Far

Waking up at 3am, I didn't have much motivation. Nevertheless, I did some brainstorming and managed to come up with an idea where your laptop is about to run out of charge and you have to get as much work done as possible. Each section of work will be a minigame.

Enough for now, I am going to get a little bit of sleep and start development when I wake up.

Finally Here

After two solid days of development, Computer Crisis is finally here. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/computer-crisis-1 I am fairly happy with the result of this LD, and I even managed to finish in time for the Compo!

P.S. Decompile the binary in the programming mini-game ;)

Results are in!

I would like to thank everyone who played and rated my game. I was overwhelmed by the positive feedback I received and the ratings have left me in shock. Personally, I cannot believe the results. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Sheep

Progress has started, be it in the form of a herd of sheep. Collisions aren't quite there yet, moving onto art soon.

Review

This Ludum Dare has been... strange. Go and check out my entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/some-seriously-screwed-sheep

SSSS

Had a great time making this game for Ludum Dare 40. You take the role of a Shepherd, managing a herd of sheep. You must keep 80 sheep alive until the timer runs out. Play and discover the threats out to get your herd of sheep!

Last few days!

Thanks for all the ratings so far (50+). I have had great praise and helpful feedback. Before the Play and Rate stage ends, play my game here.

I hope everyone had a festive holiday!

Haven't done one of these in a while.

After putting off the compo for a while, I might give this next one a go (providing the theme doesn't completely suck, which it looks like it might do looking at the voting).

I will probably be using the usual:

  • Game Maker Studio Professional
  • Photoshop/Illustrator
  • FL Studio 20

Good luck to everyone.

Progress For Today

Don't particularly want to go into the early hours of the morning, so have a gif.

physics-y stuff.gif

I wanted to quickly get down the basic art style and physics so that I can focus on mechanics and polish for the rest of my time. I doubt that will actually happen, so good luck to everyone else.

Here's the progress

Worried that I might not finish this one. I want to work on core mechanics tomorrow and then hopefully have enough time for pacing, polish and maybe a tutorial.
