Discussions

Due to many requests, I'm strongly considering running a test: move-up the start time of August's Ludum Dare event by 3 hours. Again, this is August event (Ludum Dare 42), not the event taking place this weekend.

See this thread for more details, and to share your thoughts:

/.../feedback-start-time-change-for-augusts-ldjam-event

Again, this is about August's event, not the event this weekend.

Promos

YoYo Games has provided free GameMaker Studio 2 licenses for the event.

What's new for LD41?

Unfortunately not much from me. Other than promos and several bug fixes, I spent the majority of my time the past few months looking for work. It's been nearly 20 years since I last had to find a job. It could have gone smoother, but it worked out in the end.

That said, @local-minimum was very-busy during December and January, so busy I couldn't keep up.

  • Emoji and user auto-completion in comments
  • Improved Theme Slaughter

There's a lot more I and the other contributors are working on. Once I'm settled in to my new gig, I look forward to picking up where we left off.

You can report bugs with the website here:

Keynote, hosted by Phil Strahl (@PhilStrahl)

Oh yeah! If you've been paying attention to Ludum Dare YouTubers, you know Phil (AKA Pixel Prophecy on Twitter and YouTube). He's been filming these amazing documentaries of his Ludum Dare games for quite a while now. Rumour has it Phil's dayjob might be a video colourist at an extreme media company, but nobody knows for sure.

Enough chatter, it's time to get your Phil.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjuZvDYqcRs

Speaking of keynotes, I'm looking for some new blood! :bat:

I'm down to the last name on my list, so I'm looking for volunteers to host future keynotes. I don't have specific requirements, but what jumps out at me are people that have been doing Ludum Dare for a long time, and people with an interesting story or perspective.

Ludum Dare's size and reach is so vast, I can't keep up with all the communities within the community. So if you yourself want to volunteer, or if you want to recommend someone whose not on my radar, please contact me.

PS: Don't forget to include username(s) so I can look up your/their work.

That's it for now. It's time for the final vote!

LD41's Theme: Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

The Theme for Ludum Dare 41 is...

Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Good luck everyone!

If you're having trouble with the theme, keep in mind that all Ludum Dare themes are open to interpretation. "Incompatible" may not be the most helpful word. An alternative might be to think of it as "unlikely".

Also, do note that the theme isn't "2 incompatible GAME genres". Why not genres of film or novels?

Have fun with it. :strawberry:+:cucumber: :bacon:+:house: :bat:+:ship:

Ludum Dare 42 - August 10th-13th, starts 3 hours early!!

It's science experiment time!

You can read more details here, but I often get e-mails from folks in the EU asking for the Theme early, instead of at 3 AM or 4 AM local time. We are not the Global Game Jam. We are an event that exists entirely online, so handing out themes early just isn't practical for us. That said, I hear you.

So in an attempt to be a little more EU friendly, and because Science, we're going to try starting and ending the upcoming August event 3 hours early. That looks something like this:

  • 3:00 PM Friday on the West coast of USA/Canada ***
  • 6:00 PM Friday on the East coast of USA/Canada (me)
  • 10:00 PM Friday UTC
  • 11:00 PM Friday in the UK
  • 12:00 AM Saturday in France, Germany, Sweden, South Africa
  • 1:00 AM Saturday in Finland, Belarus, Moscow
  • 3:30 AM Saturday in India ***
  • 6:00 AM Saturday in West Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong
  • 7:00 AM Saturday in Japan
  • 8:00 AM Saturday in Sydney Australia

(My apologies if I omitted you... there are a lot of you )

And as always the event goes for 48 and 72 hours, with one hour each to submit after the end (Submission Hour).

As you can see above, the problem times are if you're on the West Coast of the USA (i.e. San Francisco) or Canada (i.e. Vancouver), where more than likely you're still at work or school. Also, those in India run in to the same problem as those in the EU. The fact is there's no perfect time to schedule an international event like ours, at least if we're going to fit the full 48 hours in.

That is the plan (August only). We go back to the regular start time in December.

NOTE: If this becomes a regular thing, it'll effect the August event ONLY. April and December Ludum Dare's will continue to be run at the regular time. This would only impact 1 of 3 events we run per year.

Again this is just an experiment. We'll be doing a survey after to see what the consensus is.

Wrap Up

My apologies for the lack of website updates this time. It's been a bit of transition for me, the past few months looking for a job, and starting that job 3 weeks ago today (the Tuesday immediately after Ludum Dare ended). I'm still getting a feel for how to balance work with personal projects like Ludum Dare (I even took the day off today). I'll figure it out. Not having to stress about how I'm going to pay the bills is already a huge weight off my shoulders.

That's it for me. We'll see you again in August.

Get ready for Ludum Dare 42, at a special time: 3 hours early!

Hey folks! It's time to get ready for Ludum Dare 42!

By request, our 42nd event will be taking place at a special time: 3 hours early! See the countdown clock in the sidebar for help figuring out when that is in your timezone. Again, check out the clock in the top-right corner of the web-page. We've done our best to have it automatically adjust to your local timezone.

After the event, I'll be posting a survey to get feedback on this alternative start time. This isn't a permanent change, but if folks like it, it's something we might try again.

Submission Day? What? Here's what happened

Today we learned a few things about pushing the start-time of Ludum Dare back 3 hours: When you do that, more people are able to submit at the same time. :astonished:

Since the website has been pretty-much unusable for the past 2 hours, and we realize most people have day-jobs, school, or other obligations tomorrow, we've decided to keep things simple and leave submissions open overnight. Submissions will close about this time tomorrow (see the countdown clock).

So, say hello to the first Submission Day.

This doesn't mean you have an extra day to work, just an extra day to submit. You should have finished your game by the deadline, and noticed "oh hey, the website is messed up".

Hopefully this is not something we have to do again (at least not for a while), but this way the huge influx of traffic can be spread out.

At the time of this writing, I'm finally able to make this post, but a lot of the website is still bogged down and not working right. It should be cleared up enough to use within the hour, but it's still not fair of us to make everyone wait until then. So, Submission Day it is.

At this point I was supposed to post a survey of what you all thought of the earlier start and end time, to see if we should try this again next August. If there's time enough between now and then to do some serious infrastructure upgrades (caching improvements, DB clustering, etc), then yeah maybe we'll give it another go. But clearly we were not prepared for the increased traffic that comes from the new time.

That's it for now. Get your submissions in when you can. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Ludum Dare 43, the final December Ludum Dare

We've got one more event this year, and it's taking place Friday November 30th to Monday December 3rd at the usual time (see countdown clock in the sidebar). For those of you outside North and South America, this usually means it starts Saturday December 1st at a not-so-great time.

But wait Mike, you said final December? Please explain!

Ludum Dare schedule change starting in 2019

Starting next year, Ludum Dare events will take place twice per year: Every April and October.

Why the change? Well, keeping up Ludum Dare's 3-events-per-year schedule is something I've been struggling with for many years. Long story short, doing fewer events per year is something that will help me personally, and in general should help us run better events. I held out for as long as I could (10 years), but it's time for a change.

Busy-busy, site-work, Twitch

My apologies for being so quiet these past few months. Earlier this year I had to pick up some work, and lately we've been crunching, and we finally soft-launched a game a few weeks ago (heh). But as many of you know, the work doesn't end as soon as the game is released, and it's been keeping me busy... too busy. :sweatdrops:

Either way, I have 2 big things I'm working to fix before we kick-off on Friday.

  1. Many of you will remember the downtime/poor uptime we had last event. Fortunately I've been knee deep in server work at work, exactly the kind-of stuff we need to survive a Ludum Dare weekend (high availability, clustering, etc). Unfortunately I don't have enough time to rebuild the entire setup (learned this the hard way weeks ago), but I'm shooting to at least get the database clustered, failing over, and running more smoothly.

  2. Recently Twitch broke how we used their website (hence the endless spinner in the sidebar). I'll be doing my best to get that up and running again before Friday. The video aggregation used to be part of an esports aggregation project I was working on (privately), but if there's time I want to make that code public alongside the Ludum Dare sources.

That's the plan. ~~There might be a little bit of downtime tomorrow as I switch-over the severs, and eventually the video plugin will just work again.~~ EDIT: Servers upgraded... though not exactly as I wanted.

UPDATE: Oh! Well it seems Twitch's new structure is quite broken if you're an event like ours that needs multiple categories (art, "science"/code, audio, etc), so it's time for plan B: ~~Everyone, set your game to Ludum Dare.~~

The Ludum Dare "game" directory can be found here:

I've updated the sidebar as well, since the communities feature is now very dead.

UPDATE 2: I stand corrected. You can search by tags on Twitch, you just need the UUID. So, if you include a Ludum Dare tag on your stream, you will show up here.

https://www.twitch.tv/directory/all/tags/c8d6d6ee-3b02-4ae7-81e9-4c0f434941cc

I've again updated the sidebar to point here.

HOWEVER, the sidebar widget only shows the top 3 streams with their game set to Ludum Dare, so feel free to do that too.

Ludum Dare 44, April 26th-29th weekend

As 2018 comes to a close on this New Years eve (for some of you it already has), it's time to announce our next event: Friday April 26th to Monday April 29th (local timezones pending)! Usually we schedule April events more mid-month, but Easter 2019 landed on a funny weekend.

See you in April!

Ludum Dare schedule change starting in 2019

Just a reminder: starting in 2019 Ludum Dare events will take place twice per year: Every April and October (i.e. now every 6 months instead of every 4).

Keeping up Ludum Dare's 3-events-per-year schedule has been an incredible challenge for me. It's something that should have changed years ago, but sometimes it can take a while to figure things like this out. Plus I like nice round numbers, and doing 3-events-per-year for exactly 10 years sounded like the perfect time to end it.

But that said! We're still here! I bet folks are still going to be surprised it's already time for Ludum Dare (as it's been for the past 10 years ).

Ludum Dare 45, October 4th-7th @ 6 PM EST/22:00 UTC (3 hours earlier)

TL;DR: The headline says it all. New month, at the new time. See you again in early October!

As our April event comes to a close, we finally begin the 2 events per year schedule change announced summer of last year. We ran 3 events per year for a decade. Frankly I should have stopped sooner (at most I'd get a 2 month break between events and planning), but I like nice round numbers like 10.

Last summer we also did a test: running a Ludum Dare event 3 hours earlier. This meant folks in the UK and Europe could get a theme announcement at a much more reasonable hour: midnight or 1 AM. And you might say this test went too well, that our servers couldn't actually handle the load (... though 2018 was the year of Spectre and Meltdown, and the early mitigation patches were pretty rough on server performance).

Anyway, my point is a lot of people liked it. Even people on my side of the pond liked it (North America). So it seems fitting that if the schedule is changing anyway, we might as well make the 3 hour change permanent.

From here on event scheduling looks something like this:

  • April Events: 9 PM EST (01:00 UTC). Mid-late month. Avoid Easter, US Tax day, GDC and PAX East.
  • October Events: 6 PM EST (22:00 UTC). Early month.

April events in the classic timeslot, and October events in the new one.

April tends to be a very busy month for me (work+taxes), especially if I make it out to one of the mentioned shows (GDC, PAX East). August's have been getting harder and harder to find dates that work, that we've even had to bump Ludum Dare events to July (and this August I'm best-man at a wedding sooo). But October's, at least from where I'm sitting right now seem ripe with possibility.

Also hey! Do you remember the October Challenge? This was a special yearly event where we encouraged folks to publish a game and earn $1. It was neat.

While I'm not quite ready for us to kick off an October Challenge this year (not to mention I might want to tweak the format), this is something I'd like to start planning for again. Hence my leaning towards early October dates. Make something, and take the rest of the month doing something with it.

My thinking is that October's could be more than just a Jam month for us. I like the idea of evolving October a big month-long celebration of the things we do here. A Dare Month or something catchier. What other things can we Dare you to do?

These expanded October plans are still in the concept phase, but as we inch closer our 20th anniversary (and 48th event), it's time to start thinking about what Ludum Dare evolves in to next. We have a good thing with the Jam, lots of little things to fix, lots of data to collect in one place, but I think it's also important to start thinking about and charting where we go next.

Get ready for New-dum Dare 45!

ld45-headline.png

Hey everyone! Welcome back! I hope you had a good break. Between launching a game and taking on the responsibility of best man at my friend's wedding, I've been keeping busy. But it's good to be back.

You can sign up for the latest event right now (just login and click the join event button at the top of the page), and you can also start making theme suggestions for the upcoming event.

New Month, New Time

That's right, it's a brand new month for us: October! Ludum Dare events now happen every 6 months. Every April and October.

Also, last year we ran a bit of a test: We ran the August Ludum Dare event at an earlier time. It was so successful, that the servers couldn't handle it.

People have been asking for an EU friendlier start time for over a decade. And since the Global Game Jam came around, I've been getting requests for early-access to the theme by organizers in the EU. Early access doesn't really work for us (and I've repeated the same "no sorry" time and time again), but starting earlier is something we can do. And now, it's a permanent part of our schedule.

Ludum Dare schedules look something like this now:

  • Mid-Late April, starts at 9 PM EDT/6 PM PDT/01:00 UTC+1
  • Early October, starts at 6 PM EDT/3 PM PDT/22:00 UTC

The countdown clock on the right-side of the webpage should automatically convert the start time to your local time.

New Font?

ludumdairy-500.png

Yes! This is a little project I started shortly after the last event. I used to make pixel fonts back in the day, and I decided to challenge myself to make a real and proper font anyone could use.

https://github.com/mikekasprzak/font-ludum-dairy

The font itself is built using Font Forge. There's still more work to be done. The font lacks punctuation glyphs and kerning, but it should be complete enough for folks that want to create personalized Ludum Dare headlines on posters and banners.

Hopefully by Ludum Dare 46 I'll have found time to finish the punctuation glyphs. In the near term I hope to get the logo updated, and start using the numbers as well.

What about the October Challenge?

We used to do an event around here called the October Challenge. This was a month-long event where we challenged you to earn $1 from a game. We're not quite ready for an October Challenge just yet, but there is a reason why I scheduled the October Ludum Dare event for the first weekend of the month.

The games market has changed a lot since I started the October Challenge. Like Ludum Dare itself, it was started to light a fire under our butts to push us to finish something. When it does come back, I'd like it to be a better resource for creators.

So not yet, but there is plotting and planning to bring it back.

Wrap-up

That's it from me. We'll see you again in a few weeks.

Welcome to Ludum Dare 45 - Don't forget! We start early!

Hey everyone, it's a been a while. But it's time again for Ludum Dare!

Before we get started here, there's one important thing I want to remind you of:

Very Important: LD45 starts early!

Check the clock in the sidebar for your local start time. Long story short, if you've done Ludum Dare in the past, it starts 3 hours earlier than usual. This is the new normal. April events at the regular time (9 PM EDT), and the new October events 3 hours early (6 PM EDT).

I'm hoping the new schedule is better for folks. I would constantly get complaints that Ludum Dare events always happened at exam time (i.e. every 4 months, just like a school semester). Here's hoping this makes a difference. For me it means I should be able to run better events, where the 4 month schedule was a constant struggle to just keep to the schedule. Thanks for understanding!

I would love to play this game with my friends but right now we all are busy as we have to write our college papers. One of our friends suggested to Pay for College Papers as we searched online and found studyclerk.com/pay-for-college-papers and gave them our requrements and they completed our papers for us. We would recommend them for all writing purposes.

Ludum Dare 46

Ludum Dare 46 is almost here!

Hey folks!

Ludum Dare 46 is nearly here. Theme voting has kicked off! Every day this week will be a new round of theme voting (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). Wednesday evening we'll kick-off the final round, a combination of the highest rated themes from the first 3 rounds. Tune in for that!

For reference, this is a "regular" Ludum Dare timeslot event. i.e. it starts at 9 PM EDT/6 PM PDT on Friday, or 01:00 UTC Saturday. We switch to the earlier timeslot for October events.

That's all I've got right now. Stay safe everyone, and I'll be back Wednesday with the Final round kickoff.

Welcome to Ludum Dare 46

Social distancing before it was cool, it's time again to Ludum Dare!

Final Round Theme Voting has started. Go over here and cast your vote:

:ballot_box: /events/ludum-dare/46/theme

For rules and other info, visit the event page:

For those new to Ludum Dare, the website will become slow/unusable during the minutes leading up to the Theme Announcement, so we highly recommend you follow our Twitter account for the reveal:

https://twitter.com/ludumdare

The theme will be announced when the clock at the top this page reaches zero.

Keynote, hosted by Will Blanton (@01010111)

Keynoting our 46th event is Will Blanton (twitter), winner of Ludum Dare 32's Compo event with his game BED✰HOGG. Oh wow, that was 5 years ago!

I got the chance to meet Will at GDC many years ago. He reached out to me last year and asked to keynote, and I'm thrilled to have him. Take it away Will!

Thanks Will!

PS: Feel free to contact me if you're Ludum Dare veteran or you have a story to share. I'm always on the lookout for the next keynoter.

That's it for now. It's time for the final vote!
