First Ludum Dare

Can’t wait to start. This will be my first Ludum Dare. Myself and my partner will be doing the Ludum Dare Jam.

We will be using Unity Free

So many possibilities

Not my first pick but this theme will be interesting.

Many ideas floating around in my head right now, going to go do some brainstorming.

Of course my first thought when I hear evolution game is spore. Would rather stay away from that kind of gameplay.

I agree. It’ll be a challenge. Especially to do something that isn’t going to be 100 times redundant :\

Yes indeed. I’ve thrown out my first couple of ideas

Making good progress

The game is moving right along. Have most of the basics done.

Working on enemy AI right now. I am live streaming whenever something

interesting is happening.

Don’t have any pictures to show you yet. But we have a computer…riding a skate board…so stay tuned

Evil Toasters

Our project is moving right along. Just working on adding more enemies, more levels, more evolutionary steps.

Here is a couple of screen shots. Those dang toasters are the most evil enemy ever

First Ludum Dare Game

Yay, first Ludum Dare Jam game is done….well done enough. Got a lot of the features in that I wanted to get in.

Learned a lot doing this, can not wait for the next one. Want to try and have a better formulated plan next time.

Well I hope you all enjoy it. Might go back after catching up on sleep and add some more levels.

Obsolete Upgrade

Post Mortem

Figured I would give a quick post mortem about our game Obsolete Upgrade.

What Went Right

Well I was pretty happy with how quickly the idea came together, felt like we got a fairly unique idea put together

Art Work- Loved the art work that got done, I had to throw out some unfortunately. I will talk about that in a moment.

3d Models- It can be hard to quickly make 3d models that look semi decent. I was happy with how they came together.

Basic Gameplay- While we did not get everything in that we wanted too the gameplay, I felt, worked pretty well. There is tons of room for improvement but for the most part the game is playable.

What Went Wrong

Biggest thing that went wrong was the HUD. Artist put together a great health/evo gauge for the game. After getting it in the game I found out during the last day that the gauges would not work right because of how I had them programmed in. Bad programming on my part. After spending awhile trying to fix it I had to throw them out for some badly put together health bars at the top of the screen. I will be brushing up on my HUD programming skills

That darn collision dance. It’s possible in the game to hit the side of a platform and dance your way to the top. Still bugs me.

Level Design- This is not the best level designs I have done, might be listed under the worst. They get the job done but they seemed kind of bland to me. I would like to go back and really take some time to design out some great levels for it.

Toasters of death- Now I don’t really see this as going wrong. but some people seem to have a hard time getting past the toasters. They were not suppose to have the ability to jump on your head, that was a bug that got left in. Best thing to do is keep moving. Little pro tip. If you hit the keys just right you can roll backwards, letting you fire at incoming toasters.

What Did Not Get Added

There was more to this game that we really wanted to get put it. Main thing was more evolutionary stages. In the first write up of this game you would start as the PC on a skateboard and work your way up to a giant death bot built out of old electronic equipment. But we only got three done in time.

Various other map objects.

Boss Battles- Really wanted to add in some bosses to fight after around three stages. speaking of.

More Stages- The plan was to get 3 or 4 levels done. Got 2, oh well

All things considered I’m pretty happy with how things went. Next time there will be more planning, better huds, and no collision dancing.

*Spoiler*

One last thing, there is a cheat I forgot to take out of the version I submitted. Makes the levels way easier. Would like to see if anyone can find it

Lets make video games!

Going to be a busy weekend but I am going to try my best to make a game. This will be my second time.

Other members of my team won’t be able to make it so I am going to be doing the jam alone.

Going to be using the Unity game engine.

I will also be using the NGUI tool in unity to help with those evil menu systems

and the standard photoshop, gimp, 3d modeling program depending on what game I end up making.

Looking forward to it.

Trying to get started

Getting a late start, but oh well. I’m leaning toward a stealth based game, in terms of the theme I am wanting to do the rise of the villain. So maybe something to do with a evil AI. still in early stages.

Since I am working by myself this time I will be sticking with what I am used to for the most part, which means robots, probably third person.

Making progress

Things have been moving pretty smoothly so far…which has me worried. Player controls work well, camera is not behaving itself however. Enemy FOV seems to be working as well as the detected slider. Now to work on the platformer side of things. Here is a screenshot

Unity 2012-12-15 16-18-34-37

Still very dull looking. but its fun to run around avoiding the big robots

post-mortem

So this was a fun one. I was not able to work on my game on Monday and all, also ended up only being able to work on it for a few hours on Sunday. I got a lot further than I thought I would and I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

This was one of the themes I saw on the list that I did not want to do, so it took me awhile to come up with an idea I liked. I ended up with the stealth based 3d platformer mainly because I had never tried to do a stealth game before.

What Went Right

The Level Creation went well. Unity makes it easy for one man teams to make larger levels and get collision working

Enemy patrols and detection- They are alittle jerky when turning around, but in all I like how the enemies move around. People seemed to understand right away that they needed to stay out of the red light in front of them

The Camera- about half way through the day on Saturday I threw out my camera script and re-wrote it. Giving the player full control over the camera has its drawbacks but since you play as such a small character the player needed to be able to look up and around them to find their way around.

What Went Wrong

Player movement- This is the big one. I made my movement and camera together at first, so when I got rid of my camera my movement suffered for it. I was not able to redo it in time. Because of this the player moves too quickly at times and can be hard to control.

The Map- Just play the game and you can see how this went wrong….

The Tutorial- I waited too long to do the tutorial and because of that it is not very good.

What I wanted to add

A real map

In game dialog, some witty remarks from the bug bot and stuff

better lighting, me and unity still don’t get along when it comes to light

better controls

More toys, I had lots of different gadgets I wanted the player to be able to use, but I never could add them in

All in all I am happy with how far I got. Hopefully next time I will have my full team to help me

I can’t select the hat. It does nothing when I press the key 1. Nor shift-1.

I guess it’s because i’m on a macbook keyboard…

I am in in

RARoadkill is once again going to be trying to make something amazing. This will be my 4th Ludum Dare, unlike the last two I have gotten off work on monday so I have more time to work. I have learned a lot and I have a good feeling about this one.
I will be doing the Jam, although from the looks of it I will be going solo.
I will be using Unity Pro
Maya
Photoshop
NGUI for unity

That is my standard load out. Looking forward to it
