First Ludum Dare

This is going to be my first ludum dare and my first game jam. I’ll probably be making a 2d game using SDL2 in C++, with Photoshop and Ableton Live for mocking up content. I first threw a few framework classes together and uploaded them to mediafire.

getting started

I’m working on a swordfighting game where ‘you only get one strike’ to kill. Progress is pretty slow so hopefully I’ll have one level done by tomorrow at least to release.

I finished my first game jam game ‘Stillness of the Beast’. Following the ‘You Only Get One’ theme, I decided to make a swordfighting game where you have to rush an opponent and only get one strike against them without being hit yourself. I had planned on entering the 48-hour competition but as I was coming up the last minute I realized I wasn’t going to be able to put together any semblance of a  game in time. I then planned to at least finish in time for the 72-hour jam which I was able to do.

Given it was my first shot at a game jam I’m not too upset about not finishing in time for the competition, and it was a good learning experience. I was severely limited by both my lack of experience in using C++ and SDL, and also in beginning with only the most minimal framework to get a game started. For my next competition I might try using another toolset I’m more familiar with, and will hope to have a larger codebase from which to build on. I will also have more realistic plans about how quickly I am able to achieve my goals. Overall I had a lot of fun. Be sure to check out the generative music in game.
