My First Game Jam

ld45.1.png

I have been wanting to learn to code and make games for years, figured this might be a good way to motivate myself. Now I have a deadline to learn how to use Godot and make basic (yet consistent and pleasing!) art.

I wish we could look through all of the themes again. Maybe it's so people can't go back and change their mind on a bunch of things?

The themes I had put in were:

  • hand held
  • infestation
  • everyone is mad at you

Getting Ready

Going through some of GDQuest's tutorials before the weekend to get an idea of how to use Godot. Starting to understand the structure of this program.

One thing I really need to learn is how to port my game correctly. I've read that Godot games can have problems playing in browser, but I really want to do that to make it easier to play. So I'm going to practice that before the weekend. I'd hate to finish a game and not submit the game on time. I know I will have an additional hour to submit, but I don't want to take that chance.

I have also learned a lot of what makes a good theme from reading some of the blog posts here, I'll keep them in mind if I do another game jam like this where I can suggest a theme.

I did not learn anything before the jam

I got through about half of a tutorial on how to make a menu before Friday. This means whatever I make and put out, I learned this weekend! My idea is probably too ambitious for someone who doesn't know anything about Godot, but it should be easy to scale back. I'm using some assets from itch.io and my game will at most take 7 to 10 minutes to play. I think I can still complete the game on time.

Today I hope to get these things done:

  • a menu
  • all the character's animations to work
  • a dialogue system is in place
  • dungeon is set up
  • main character can interact with NPCs
  • a win condition
