LD15

First time

Hello world! This is my first ld, but my second 48 hour competition. The first being No More Sweden that I failed, so this time I will win :) The winning combination will probably be C++, sfml, fmod and box2d on the code side and paint.net and sfxr on the tools side.

My custom library

It looks like my math-library will be finished in time for the competition, so I’m gonna use that. I’m telling you this because…

As an entrant, your custom library should be declared before the start time

It’s over at google code, currently under a lgpl license and despite it’s called a engine it’s currently only a math-library with a modular design.

SFML and AntTweakBar

I couldn’t find any ready-made function for connecting sfml and AntTweakBar so I made one. Somewhat ported from the sdl source, and I figured I’d post it here since someone might want to use it.

SfmlHandle(), line 40(currently) in this file. It is currently kinda hacked together so it doesn’t support scrolling or text-input (yet), but it’s better than nothing :)

Goodmorning, goodbye

Here is a first sketch of my game-idea: “Let’s go cave-burrowing” or “Eeat or die” (haven’t decided).

design

You fly/flap around, puke explosive stuff and eat (or dies).

Breakfast a glass of milk and candy-leftovers from yesterday…

breakfastleftovers

and finally a photo of my desk

workplace

N ow I’m gonna setup chronolapse for timelapse videos and then code like a monkey :)

I like the road rash on the top of the chair too.. 😉

Apparently I eat a lot…

and then…

however, there was some progress…

It’s easy to fly…

…just don’t hit the ground! So far our hungry hero/monster flies around and can make a puke-animation, behind the game-window is the sucky level with the even more sucky level-format :)

screenshot_29-augusti-2009_011I might make some touchups here and there, but otherwise that graphics probably is final. If you don’t like it I’m going to send evil kittens to haunt you…

DSCN6655DSCN6656DSCN6657

Those very dramatic shots of my last candy means that I don’t have anything left, and it’s time to shop for food. I’m going to curse my refrigerator for being empty and then go shopping. In the last shot there is a little sketch about how stuff work in my game – enjoy :)

The attack of the flying puking green monster!

So I went for groceries around 17.30

made two 190g hamburgers for me to eat (and ate them) they were delicious :)

played 2 rounds of the kill-switch demo

..and with the help of too many cookies and a few glasses of apple-juice..

DSCN6668

…my monster can now puke green things that bounce around for a time and then disappear (explosions pending).

Next time, I’m going to focus on a game where it’s easy to take screenshots :)

Fixes, food and feet

I’ve fixed a few physics-bugs in the game and the result is a more stable game, however the screenshots looks the same so here are various stages of breakfast (instead) and a link to my source at google svn

Almost there….

Okay, I made some progress, but first, snacks!

then stress-testing the physics…

.. and finally a cavern I made while playing…

Now I’m fed up with snacks and gonna go and make me a dinner with at least some nutritional content :)

I’m done

I’ve uploaded screenshots, videos to youtube and the final executable. If someone wants to host it I’ll be happy to remove rapidshare. I don’t know how stable rapidshare is, but I’m guessing it will stop after 50 or so downloads, even if I signed up with them… anyways here is the last of my foodphotos:

DSCN6694DSCN6695DSCN6696

I’l be going through the timelapse videos tomorrow, cleaning it up and removing the parts where I cheat :) If anyone knows a good premiere-like video-editing freeware for windows xp, I would be a happy if you told me :)

Now it’s time to sleep. it’s 2.03 (am) local time, and I gotta be at work at 8. This monday (today that is) is going to be fun!

Problems running my game

Since I didn’t have the opportunity to test my game on other machines I was guaranteed to run into something bad. Apparently my game is dependent on two versions of the crt – fun fun! I should’ve checked the final binary for dependencies. Will fix that as soon as a I get back home from work.

The game should still compile on *nix (and mac) systems as long as you have a c++ compiler, sfml, boost, box2d and anttweakbar installed.

This is the last time I’ll use a prebuilt library!

Decisions, decisions– about game-design

This is a short behind-the-scenes explanation of why my game, Let’s go cave-burrowing is missing some gameplay

In the beginning I envisioned a game where you threw “grenades” to change the environment, sort of a casual-like game. I didn’t want to have any game-over screens or the like, as this would detract from the core gameplay. One solution to make it more interesting was to add diamonds that threw out more puke-like balls that exploded, though I didn’t had the time to implement it.

All the easy game-play I could add to make it more challenging would remove the fun. For example I thought to add a timer so that you had to complete the level within a certain time, but then the player would not be able to “explore” the level at his/her own pace.

It was only now this morning that I realized that the perfect solution would be to rate the player based on some score of fast-completion and huge explosions, since then it would add a challenge for those who wanted it, but it wouldn’t punish those who didn’t. I guess you can’t win every time :)

What you should’ve gone for was somehtign to add depth/interaction to the game without making it difficult.

For example:

creatures that run around and are comically knocked flying by explosions. (they don’t hurt you, they’re just cute) (or other non-destructable props that can be knocked flying)

Various objects to ‘collect’ underground, like gems

World variety to explore (natural caves, trees, clouds)

Nice idea with the cute animals, but then there was this time-limit :) Originally I wanted dirt and debris to be flying from all the explosions and they should push you and the goo-balls away but time ran out :)

Anyway, I’m just glad I got something playable :)

LD16

I’m in!

I got a idea for a game: turn based exploration and treasure hunting in the some deep dark jungle.

And this is what a ate fore breakfast, time to do some shopping and iron out the details, then some lunch and coding/art creation!

DSCN6737 (Small)

my breakfast

The tools will be c++, sfml for the coding and paint.net/gimp and sfxr/audacity for the artist side.

Programmer art ftw!

Now this is some actual progress. The images are randomly generated and currently I also included boost (random and shared ptr) to my pack of libraries. Enjoy the programmer art in it’s true form. Here is grass that you can go on and water you can swim in.

thanks, pics will arrive :)

Getting sleepy!

First some food…

Then some actual development, this is how it currently looks

That is not a horribly drawn santa, he’s a brave explorer with a backpack!

Next up is treasures, better movement and hopefully some computer/human controlled explorers, but now… sleep!

Doing alright

Breakfast…

breakfast

mmmmm

And progress:

screenshot_2009-12-13_001 (Small)

The steps/foots is calculated using a simple manhattan algorithm, if I got the time I’ll use a modified version of bresenham’s line algorithm making it look nicer and making it easier to move. Next up is treasures!

Preparing for competition

I ate lunch…

DSCN6746 (Small)

Closest to the camera is in Sweden called caviar, and according to wikipedia, called creamed smoked roe pretty much everywhere else(I am told it can be found on ikea when your not in sweden). On the other two sandwiches there are lettuce, ham, cucumber and garden cress. If you haven’t tried it it’s delicious :)

I also ate a few cookies, and all I got left is null, so here is a picture of that:

DSCN6747 (Small)

Finally I added a pirate treasure, in the shot below I’ve picked up two of them:

screenshot_2009-12-13_003 (Small)

Now I’m going to add some more stuff!

smoked roe you say? Is that anything like Taramasalata?

These boots were made for walking

I made food and ate it.

Currently I’m enjoying this  brownie

DSCN6749 (Small)

and I’ve also added boots at the bottom telling you how many steps you more can take before your round is over

Now it’s time for the last bits…
