Ludum Dare 46

Pay a visit in the spir(it) cave!

ld46-play-2.gif

Another Ludum Dare has ended and it went very well this time. A fast paced platformer with random generated levels. The random generation code was scary to write but after been playing almost 100 levels over the last days it's good enough for a jam game.

Enjoy! And oh post your record of time taken to play trough the game in the comments on the game (you will get the time after finishing the game)

Ludum Dare 47

Just finished our 14th Ludum dare

cover.png

Lot has happend since my first Ludum dare back in 2014.

This weekend was a blast! After being stuck on the theme and a very slow start we finally got up on speed in the evening of Saturday and basically the game was pretty much done already on Sunday evening.

Spent Monday for some polishing and adding an end "boss".

Mathias neighbours probably wonder what all the noises came from when he made the sound effects using various stuff in his home.

Music was done by me when I woke up in the middle of the night between Saturday and Sunday and couldn't fall asleep again.

The game is called WHILE (TRUE) and as you guessed it's a game about programing loops. Help poor programmer Bob to break the loops he caused with his code.

The game can be found at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/$226349

The difficulties of balancing a game for a jam

366c0.png

"This game was too easy" "Puzzles was easy" or "This game was too hard" "I don't understand how to play"..

Which one to choose?

After doing fourteen Ludum dares I still struggle with game balance. I usually aim for the game to be easy to play because players will only spend 3-5 minutes on a game before moving on. So I'm thinking that the overall scoring will be higher if the player feel like it was easy and he completed the game. But on the otherhand does an easy game mean lower overall score because the player felt the game was too easy?

What do you think? Aim for making it easy to play trough to the end in 3-5 minutes or make it really hard like a real commercial game?

Also the feed on the site also would need a way to keep popular posts floating up instead of just being a timeline of posts. Like this post and disucssion will be lost in about an hour ;)

My game is at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/while-true-1 btw and I did aim for it to be easy.. maybe too easy.

Voting

Every game I have checked on the Zero rating sorting has at least two votes. Even the ones with no links. Some people cheating I guess?

My 15th Ludum dare done!

15th Ludum Dares.. Time goes quick and this one was the most stressed one at the end fixing a bunch of stupid bugs. I just finished playing it trough without any game breaking bugs at least.. phew :)

The game is an Arkanoid/Breakout clone where you travel downwards into a mining shaft escaping the world that is falling apart.

As always we had a huge great time apart from the last hours of stressful bugfinding.

The game is called The Shaft and you can play it at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/the-shaft

Who has participated in most number of jams?

I just did my 15th LD (10 on ldjam and 5 on the old site) but with 48 times there must be someone participating even more times? Is there any stats available?

My 16th Ludum dare done.

Back in 2014 when I did my first LD I had no idea how to make a game. I had been playing around with LibGDX for a few months without knowing what I was doing.

For many years, since 2016, I have participated with my friend Mathias but this time he wasn't able to make it this weekend so I decided to do the solo compo again for the first time since 2015 which makes this the 16th time I'm doing Ludum dare.

Saturday was kind of bad, I was tired and had a head ache for many hours but got most of the graphic and basic play mechanics done. I also took two breaks from the programming and played around in my DAW of choice Ableton live. And suddenly I had two songs that I could use. One very sad and eerie song and one more happy song.

Sunday have been spent on creating levels, adding start and end screens and also took one more break in Ableton and created an intro tune.

I usually spend three days when doing the jam so it feels strange to be done and submitted already on Sunday evening.

As always it's been a great weekend even if I have felt tired and not having enough energy.

The game is called Grandma and is about saving grandma so she can have a few more days to live.. a very sad theme this time but we are also living in sad and terrible times at the moment so I guess that makes sense.

The game can be found at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/grandma and I can't wait to start to test other compo games :)

17th LDjam

IMG_1905.png

This is my 17th LDjam and 14th as a team. After a few years of pause we finally got together this weekend in my basement and made a game called Juicy rollers.

One of our friends finally joined us and made a few tunes and sound effects. And late Saturday night an old colleague helped us out with graphic ideas. Now we are looking forward for the next LDjam in April :)

The game can be played at Juicy rollers
