I'm In -- Solo Dev

My group bailed on me, but I'm still going for it! This is my first Ludum Dare.

Engine: Unity

Graphics: Some combination of Pyxel Edit, Inkscape, and Gimp depending on the theme

Audio: Audacity

I'm a newbie & a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none, so my goal is just to get something out there this weekend!

Good Luck to everyone!

It's cocktail o'clock here...

Despite getting up at 5, I have not made nearly as much progress as I wanted... I'm a beginner and I bit off a little more than I could chew so I wasted 5 hours trying to implement a feature that I should have abandoned after an hour of tinkering. Ah well, so it goes. The good news is I finally have a core gameplay loop and now I can focus on fine-tuning it and making this into an actual game.

I'm going to focus on art and stuff for a while to clear my head and have a chill evening.

Game still has no title, and the to-do list is long, but I'm feeling good

Artwork is in progress, there is a core gameplay loop, and I have a board full of things that are in progress; I won't make the compo deadline but I feel confident about the jam. Now my game just needs a title...

I've had waaaaay too much coffee and not enough sleep. Or fresh air. How's everyone else holding up?

I'm loving seeing sneak peeks into everyone else's games.

I'm ready!

Unity, updated.

Snacks, purchased.

Coffee, stockpiled.

Art supplies, organized.

LD 45 -- I'm ready for you.

Going solo again using Unity + whatever I need for the rest. For the Community Game Jam I did hand-drawn and scanned art and I loved how that came out so I'm hoping to do that again.

Good luck, all!

The Hour Before Game Jam

Just an hour till start time

The drinks are lined up

There’s snacks by my chair

And ice in my cup

The art table’s prepped

The feeling is heady.

When the theme is revealed

I think I am ready. IMG_8183.JPG

Too much time spent on art... gotta buckle down and get coding.

Ok. Usually I get in way over my head on the coding, so everything else gets pushed to the side. This time, I got overly ambitious with the art, and everything else has been pushed to the side. I got a minimally playable level by mid-morning and then spent most of the day in my studio.

Perhaps doing clay and collage and mixed media and block printing was too much?IMGem8238.JPGIMG/em8236.JPG

Good morning, all!

Still not sure if I am going to make Compo or if I will have to aim for Jam, but I had a single functional level when I went to bed last night, so there's that. Screenshot_Beg.png

Ludum Dare 46 Background is ready

My desktop background is ready to go... with a lesson learned from LD 45 -- if it ain't broke; don't 'fix' it.LudumDare46.png

25 % Checkin

Ok. Can't believe we're at 25% done already.

I have a minimal playable game, too many ideas, and not enough sleep.

After lunch I am going to focus on music and art for the afternoon, so hopefully I'll have something to share other than Kenney placeholder assets. Imagine, if you will, that instead of planes there are bees and birds and beetles and flowers and a beehive. Lol.PLANES.png

Missed compo deadline, but still going for Jam

I hit a wall yesterday around 6 -- I was just staring at my code and I couldn't make any progress. Decided that I needed a break, so 12 hours later I'm back in the saddle and trying to finish my game in time for the jam deadline.

The enemies are modeled after real-life enemies of bee hives. Most of the art was painted and then scanned, but I colored the bee digitally to try to make it stand out more. Not sure if I like that or not... it looks very cartoony compared to the rest of the characters.

Here's a teaser of my artwork: Teaser.png

Progress is so darn slow this weekend. Where does the time keep going?

This was not a good weekend for LD47 -- too many real-world commitments, but I decided to go for it anyway. And I decided to play with a new (to me) tool called Fungus. Fungus is a Unity plug-in aimed at dialog/text heavy storytelling. Right up my alley.

The learning curve feel particularly steep as I am trying to juggle family commitments and eeking out time to work on the project so progress feels slower than molasses in January.

I'm sure I am not going to make Compo. I'm not even sure I am going to make Jam with anything but a demo, but I'm having fun learning a new tool and I'm really excited about this project. So excited I am going to spend the rest of the month polishing it into an actual game.
