LD32

A couple hours in…

Still the biggest issue with Unity I have is the overwhelming animation situation, which can make a game look really…bland otherwise.
I had fully planned to do 2D until I began developing, but plans change. Pretty much every one of my ideas changed when I really came to terms with asset limitations. Oh well! It’s coming along.

Happily Progressing

I’m chugging along pretty well on my solo project. Though a lot of the time is spent pulling assets from the Unity store and such, I’ve got some real progress going on the actual mechanics as well.

Hopefully there will be enough time to delve into the story of one man…and his ball.

Day 2

My desk is now covered in sticky notes for all the bugs/features I need to deal with. But otherwise it’s going quite well! I’m worried about not having a lot of content in the game, mostly because I get distracted working on a new intro sequence or something.
Anyways, here’s a gif of tip scrolls;

Made it out alive

Finally finished up my entry for the Jam, since I won’t be able to work on it before the deadline tomorrow.
Say hello to my first ever Ludum Dare entry, Fiero 😀

A post-mortem of my first LD game

Abridged Version;

The Good

Less worry about art with free Unity assets.
Finally got animations working in Unity.
Unity 5 made polishing super easy.
2D movement in a 3D world made decisions much easier.
Learned how Unity’s new UI system works.
Color scheme helped immensely.

The Bad

Not enough planning.
I wish I had worked in a group.
Early programming quick-fixes ended up costing a lot later.
Making solid gameplay for an RPG takes a long time.
Difficulty level was hard to play with.

Important Jam Lessons I Learned

  1. If you don’t know how to implement a feature a certain way, before you ditch it, think of other ways to do it.
  2. Have a restriction.
  3. Ideas are always dependent on skill, so be flexible.
  4. Build more with less.
