Ludum Dare 50

It's been a while..

Mecha Unit 37

bleep bloop I'm excited for this LD, my weapons of choice: - Aseprite - Unity - 1BitDragon - SFXR - Trello

Restricting myself to pixel art, so no blender fun unless the theme requires some kind of 3D gameplay gimmick. Also must be playable in the browser.

Nice Theme

I was all prepared to make a folklore game as well haha. Anyway, I'm awake, so my design document in full:

B-Game

You are a B.

Summer is here.

Winter is there.

Do B stuff to prepare.

No guns, just cosy gameplay. Let's a go!

Some Early B Artwork

The Queen has some bling and a rod for poking the workers.

B-Game Art

I've done more than I thought I would since starting 6 hours ago, implemented some simple flocking for the Bs and made a little art.

The goal will be to locate flowers to harvest, which will be a limited resource. Once the timer runs out, Winter arrives and your honey is divided amongst the workers. Run out of honey during a winter and it's the end of your reign Queenie.

Mr Sun

Gameplay_235.gif

Got the sun and an angry cloud in, the mechanic will be that wet bees can't gather resources, so you need to go back to the sun to dry off.

9 hrs in, getting sleepy lol

4am Start

Cat woke me up so might as well get back to it

Today will mostly consist of attempting to make music.

Good luck everyone!

Core game loop complete

The simple core gameplay loop I've gone with in screenshot style.

Where did all the time go?

Well it's been a few hours since I submitted and got a few hours sleep. Reviewing my code, there doesn't appear to be much there. With the biggest class, the primary controller coming in at just 433 lines. So what was the biggest time sink for me? Here's a rough breakdown:

Design: 1- 2 hr

Code (Scripting and Unity Prefab Setup): 10 - 14 hr

Making GIFs for the Internet: 1- 2 hr

Sleep: 12- 14 hr

Audio: 1 hr

Art: 7- 10 hr

Idle: 5 hr

I'd rate this jam 5 out of 6 happy purple stars.

Early Feedback

Thanks to everyone that has given me feedback on my game so far, much appreciated, I've already started implementing some of the changes from the feedback ready for a post-compo build, they include:

  • Zoomable camera when you move, to show more of the playing field, easier to navigate.
  • Flower radar icons to help you find the nearest sky garden.
  • Normalised sound.

B-Game Post Mortem

I've been putting this off for a while, as I suck at reflective writing, but anyway I'll give it a bash.

What went well - Art: using a consistent colour palette across all the sprites, helped the game visuals stay coherent, and from feedback the bright colour scheme seemed to go down well. Definitely the strongest category for me I'd say. - Sound: bleep bloop, functional sound, crammed in at the last hours. - Presentation: I thought the presentation was not bad for the time scale.

What went not-so-well - Gameplay: a bit lacking in the old gameplay, but I wanted something super casual, so I think I achieved that goal. - No tutorial: the game can be a bit confusing for new players. - No flower radar: even though the owl will point to the nearest flower patch it would have been nice to have a mini-map. - Screen resolution: too zoomed in, needed to be further away for the player to get a feel of being able to actually see what they were travelling towards and make it easier to avoid angry clouds.

What next? - Jam revision: I'll take the feedback and make a new build, already one in a github branch if anyone cares to nosy. - Asset Flip into another game: already started this :) using the existing visuals and making it more into a casual game, Match Bee:
