Updates to Scrambl'd

scrambld_goal.png

We recently published a new update to Scrambl'd fixing some bugs that came up during the last hours before submission. Game link and list of the full changelog is available here!

We are also in the midst of planning a post-LD version featuring all the stuff we dreamed of doing but didn't have time to fulfill... ...and maybe even print some Scrambl'd cartridges. Stay tuned!

Working on music!

Currently scoring the game that .fpeg, LiquidFunk, Okamit, Frasse and I are making. It's a point-and-click adventure game in a haunted* mansion. Hope you like it!

The music of "Blackout"

I really enjoyed writing the music for Blackout! The best part about game jams is that you have to go with your first instinct. You don't have the time to try things out, because the clock is ticking. I can sit with a single piece of music for weeks, even months just trying to get it perfect. Yet, somehow, I can do several tracks in 3 days, and be happy with them. Not just "for being made in a short time", but, like, actually happy. That is rare for me. Anyways, I'm rambling. Here's the main theme which I wrote in Cubase, along with all the MIDI data playing in real time. Thanks for playing!

The music of "Blackout" - Part 2

First of all, thank you so much for all the kind words about our game Blackout, and my music! We are very proud of what we achieved in 3 days, and the response has been overwhelming!

SPOILER WARNING

So, I made this specific track for the game that plays in a certain part of the game. I can't really say too much about it without ruining for those who have yet to play the game. But all I can say is that I loved making it, and my girlfriend and I had lots of fun recording the material. I thought I'd post the full version for you to listen to. So here it is:

Enjoy!

The music of "Blackout" - Part 3 and Final Thoughts

Wow! A massive thanks to all who played, rated and commented on Blackout! And thank you very much for very nice comments about the music from the game! It warms my heart.

I loved scoring Blackout. Spooky-sounding game music is just a treat to both listen to, and to make! I mean, it's no Luigi's Mansion, but I'm quite pleased with the stuff I achieved in only one weekend. I've shared 2 out of 3 tracks previously, so naturally here's the last one.

This one's probably my favorite track. It was also the last one I wrote before I went to bed on the night of the deadline. I originally wrote just the first 36 seconds, and it was supposed to end there. I felt creatively exhausted and thought I had no more juice to make any more new music. The programmer Frasse told me "just find a small section to loop for the second half of the game". I thought "alright... let's just do this". And it turned into a full new track instead. It plays on the main melody from the main theme, but in a Major key (Mixolydian in fact, for you music nerds out there!), but turns into a new thing. Anyways, enjoy!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Working with my team was a blast. We had lots of fun! A big thank you to the best team one could ask for during a no-sleep weekend; .fpeg, LiquidFunk, Okamit, Frasse and a huge, huge thanks to Falafel for promoting us and submitting our game to every stream possible. We wouldn't have made it without you!

See you all next season!

...oh, and by the way. We're making a Post-LD version, more on that soon...! Follow the game on itch.io for more news!

The music of "The Assessment"

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has played The Assessment, and for all the kind words about the game and my music!

I wasn't supposed to participate this LD at all. Just a week before, I said no. I was worrying a lot. The last time I made a soundtrack for LD I made Blackout. I just didn't think I could top it. I thought that score was the peak of my career. I still do. But I couldn't let my team down, and they didn't have a replacement, so I sort of half-agreed to it. But then came Friday and I was asked to work late on Saturday, since my job requires people working weekends. (Just for context, I live in Sweden so the jam started at 3 am on Saturday.) So now I only had Sunday and Monday left. But I had already planned a day trip out of town on Monday, which I couldn't cancel. Which means I now only had Sunday and a few leftover hours on Monday to do everything.

Anyway, I did what I could with the time I had and am quite pleased with most of it. Only thing I'm not happy with is the cutscene music, which was rushed before submission, as well as the win fanfare which was just a placeholder.

When I started composing I didn't really have a clear vision, I just thought "I'll make some whacky music with some cheap-sounding sounds," and I did a few tracks in that style. I knew we had to have a win and a lose fanfare, so I thought "wouldn't it be funny if they were overly dramatic?" I did the lose fanfare first, which was based on an unused main theme I composed quickly before work on Friday. There's no recording of it so I can't share it, sorry. I was pretty happy with it, and it made the game more insane. As I said before, the win fanfare is basically just a work in progress. I never got around to finish it because other stuff had to be done which had higher priority.

Last pieces of the puzzle were the title theme and the cutscene underscore which were made in the last 4 hours before submission. I originally had planned to do more sound effects, especially for the cutscene, but alas, there was no time.

All in all, it was a fun LD, and I'm glad I participated. I put together a short video featuring the very first music track I did and the second-to-last one. Enjoy, and thanks for reading!

The Assessment - A Short Update!

My team and I are working on the inevitable post-jam update of our game The Assessment, which is a WarioWare-type game with microgames.

We did around 10 games, but we had so many others planned that never came to fruition because of, well, time. Here's a sneak peak of one of those games, it's called "Share The Wifi" and basically you're the host of the party and your guests are eagerly awaiting the Wifi password. A true classic.

So I did this music track for the microgame, please enjoy! And stay fresh!
