First Timer Here!

Hey everyone!

This is my first time in the competition as well. I will be using Flash Punk for my submission, Paint.Net for graphics and sfxr/audacity/LMMS for audio. This is my first time using Flash Punk as well so this should be a complete trainwreck. Looking forward to finding out the theme and not getting enough sleep this weekend.

Title: Compact Discovery

My idea is probably one you will be seeing a lot of: Roaming around in space, visiting planets.

I also want to add side scrolling level within the levels themselves for extra “Discovery”.

Also, as the title suggests, the planets are Compact Discs/CDs so I can have a little fun with that concept.

Right now I have basic overworld movement and collision with planets being detected – woot!

Noon Saturday: Progress Report

Well … yeah…

Since starting at 2am this morning I’ve managed to get a few things done. The overworld is coming together – planets are spinning and being put in various places. Spawn points are… spawning…

Enemies don’t do anything yet because I need to finish the terrible movement in the player first. The movement works at least though.

Not bad for 7 hours I think…

1pm Saturday

Yay! Fixed the movement on my player somewhat and added particles.

I declare my game to be the prettiest ever! <3

Saturday Lunchtime

Benefits of being with your parents for Christmas:

Easy access to food.

Disadvantages to being at your parents’ for Christmas:

Not like I can go for food anywhere else….

Game is coming along nicely btw.

Hooray for Enemies!

Starting to think this game might be halfway decent.

Not Much change…

Got arrows pointing to the various planets. A circle saying how close the enemies have to be to shoot. A hub graphic and better all around controls…. and a background … is that all I’ve really done in the last 4 hours or so?

Argh…

First Playable Demo

Finally felt ok with what I have to post a playable demo: http://sarah.draknek.org/Games/CompactDiscovery/

Not getting much done at the moment. I think I need a break and then to hack my way through the rest of the stuff I have planned.

<///< Thank you.

28 Hours to Go

Back to work and I have a checklist (minus putting in a whole other half of the game but oh well…):

1. Pause Button

2. Money

3. Hub Menu

4. Upgrades

5. Mining

6. Planet Properties

7. Turrets for Hub

8. Quest

9. Main Menu

10. Instruction Menu

11. Music

12. Sound Effects

13. Prettier Graphics

//If I have time

14. Different Types of Enemies

15. Better Controls

Place your bets now!!! How many I’ll get done and in which order!!!

Wow…. Gameplay – that’s novel

Each planet will now randomly spawn money, enemies or allow you to mine it.

There is a mining bar at the bottom. The amount you can mine depends on how big the planet is.

There are random spawn points throughout the world. Planets and generic spawn points will no longer appear right next to the hub.

Planet and spawn points will be randomly reset when you visit the hub. Your health will be recharged at the hub when you enter it. You can choose to sell your mined Carbon for money at the hub.

…Still can’t die yet though… I should put that in at some point.

Controls:

Mouse to Move, Click to Fire.

Press P to Pause/Unpause.

Press Space to Enter Hub/Exit Hub/Mine Planets

Click “Sell Carbon” to Sell Mined Resources (On Hub Menu)

Yay, spacemining :D/ Moving was a bit confusing, but actually quite fun after a while. Now you need some better explosions 😛

And I’m finished

I’m satisfied with my game as it is. The game isn’t going to win the competition – but that isn’t what this was about for me. I made a game, by myself, in less than 48 hours and it’s one that I am proud to submit.

http://sarah.draknek.org/Games/CompactDiscovery/

There’s still a bunch of stuff to improve on it at a later date (as listed on the page) but I’m very pleased.

This has been a great experience and I will definitely take part again in the competition at some point in the future.

Good luck to the rest of you that are still going!

Timelapse Video

First time I’ve seen a timelapse of my own work before… kinda interesting.

You should try it with a webcam next time. God that’s weird. I now know I put my hand on my forehead when I’m thinking/coding (Day 1) and on my chin/mouth when I’m frustrated/panicking (Day 2).

Link to Newest Version

I will be using this link to host the newest versions of Compact Discovery until the end of the competition judging. After that I’ll be merging the original LD submission with the newer copy.

Went to play your game again as I hadn’t rated it yet and the links no longer work, they just go to an instruction page. Is this because it’s not live yet or is something wrong?

LD25

In!

Well it’s been awhile since my last attempt at LD but here we go!

Windows 7

Actionscript 3 with Flashpunk

Sfxr and perhaps LMMS

… and hopefully a good idea!

Pre-LD Plan

Thanks to the unfortunate time zones I’ll be sleeping when the competition kicks off. So here’s the short-term plan:

  1. Sleep
  2. Wake up
  3. Freak out over theme
  4. Have designer’s block for a couple of hours
  5. Eat
  6. Pick an idea and get cracking

Long-term Plan:

  1. Pick idea
  2. Start game
  3. Realise game isn’t brilliant
  4. GOTO 1

Bring it on!

Ok Let’s Get Going!

“You are the villain” eh? An interesting theme.

Nothing jumps to mind immediately which will be a good thing in the long run.

Let’s go!

Got An Idea

Alrighty, got myself an idea. Going to try out a game about crushing flowers under the boot of villainy.

I should be able to get the first part of the game done fairly quickly and see if it is playable.

Hope everyone else is doing alright!

2.5 Hours In

Been working at the game for 2.5 hours now.

The idea for the game is starting to become more concrete.

You are a troll. This particular troll will turn to stone in sunlight. The sun is powered by flowers and the damn things just keep on growing!

Smash up those plants and stop the sun from waking up!

I’ve got a basic level, a moving and jumping red block (representing the player), collidable ground and plants.

The plants themselves are animated already to grow from a small seed.

2.5 hours in

ToDo List:

  • Health System for the Plants
  • The Sun and it’s relationship to the plants
  • Sprites for the ground and troll
  • Artwork for the sky
  • Properly masked collision on plants
  • Multiple ground areas
  • Ladders or transport devices
  • Audio

3.5 Hours In

Quick update. Health on the plants is now represented:
