Ludum Dare 50

Introduce yourself (right on!)

Excited to participate in Ludum Dare for the first time.

Previously I've survived various one and two-week jams and One Hour Game Jam too. I now feel ready to challenge myself to this and just in time for the 50th!

I'm not sure how theme suggestions work or whether suggestions are still open, but here's some ideas regardless:

  • Declutter
  • Misinformation
  • Kaiju

Tools I'll be using:

  • Unity & Git
  • Asesprite
  • Audacity
  • Kanban
  • Pen & paper
  • Public Domain / CC0 music, sfx and fonts 馃槄

Good luck to everyone!

LD50 "Delay the inevitable" concept

Spent much of yesterday evening brain-storming ideas for about eight of the remaining themes in the final vote. Funnily enough, "Delay the inevitable" was the first I created an idea for.

In this game, a multi-planetary species is an inevitable outcome. You're playing as a resistance force determined to send any attempts at leaving the planet back home. But is this the ideal outcome..?

Unity project started. Base resolution decided, scene layout and some utility scripts implemented. Pushing to a Github repo too.

Good luck everyone!!

LD50 - Day 2

First time implementing this kind of player movement, and as such I've spent a lot of time learning. I also spent too much time yesterday on project plumbing, but I'm hoping it'll pay off when it comes to the submission hour.

Circular movement was the biggest frog on my list and as such I'm feeling pretty confident with the remaining time. My submission may be strung together with primitives but I'm hopeful it'll be a playable game with source code 馃

LD50 Day 3 - It's a game!

Had to make a lot of cuts to get it over the finish line... But it's playable... It's a game!

I'll write up something more substantial later... It's 02:42 here in the UK and I could do with some well-deserved sleep.

Everything's published including source code. Looking forward do doing it again for LD51 馃憤

Something I happened upon in the comments after #50. Perhaps it'll help you too?

Remember: Playable first. Polish later.

Looking forward to the next three days. This'll be my second LD.

My creative stack hasn't changed much since #50, but anyone interested:

  • C# & Unity
  • Git & GitHub (will be publishing MIT source)
  • Asesprite
  • Audacity
  • Bfxr

Good luck everyone!

An RTS in a weekend. WCGW?

Given I live in the UK, I went to sleep around midnight and woke at 4AM to check the theme. I figured going back to sleep would allow the brain to chew on ideas...

I ended up dreaming about Theme Hospital. Which wasn't all that useful except that the isometric RTS vibe stuck with me. As I woke I pivoted my thinking towards classic StarCraft and it's resource gathering SCVs. It's a bit of a stretch...but they gather and deliver...right?

With that in mind, I then wondered if I could achieve a bare bones RTS in three days. Code-wise, I'm about 80% confident, which is just the right balance I think. Leaning on events, command pattern, NavMesh among other things. The missing 20% accounts for things I'm less familiar with such as mousing objects on the field and working with a flexible screen resolution. I usually default to 720p, given the genre I think it's more appropriate to allow for the full screen real-estate here.

Design-wise, I think this'll be one of those figure-it-out-along-the-way kind of ordeals. I've just got to make sure that the gameplay centres around gathering a thing so that you can deliver that thing elsewhere to folks in need. Perhaps it's a distant team or command centre that's made a request for resources which you must fulfil.

Just keep it small. Way way small. And maybe...just maybe this'll work out. The worst case scenario: I could keep working on it as part of Extra. Regardless, it'll be a fun learning exercise as I've yet to include an RTS in my portfolio.

Wish me luck!
