Ludum Dare 46

Bits of art and process from our game! (Tale of a Little Guardian)

Hello there! Just wanted to share some of my experience and some reflections about a 72 hours straight/sleepless/amazing jam! The whole thing came out quite good in my opinion (but I'm biased on this, obviously :P) but there's always room for improvement

These are some of our assets, all created and animated using photoshop. The spritesheets are quite messy and some animations has taken like 10 minutes, there's a lot of empty space and stuff like that, and that's one of the symptoms of a tight deadline and the attemp to overdo it. A LOT.

The main thing I'd change is the style, cause painting every sprite individually can be really hard if you have the amount of stuff we decided to put in, and having all these little details means a huge load of work. the result is still good but maybe the experience could have been enhanced by using a simpler and more minimal style

I'm quite happy about char and env design because it's my favourite part, and some of the creatures are cute, since I usually paint monsters and ugly stuff I didn't imagine they could be so "decent". The main character is a cute little acorn and it was fun to animate and paint, also because the design is really simple and took less time than say, the snail, to paint and create all the spritesheets, even if there are a lot more.

Terrain tiles were the most messy part, we had to have them created fast so the tiling in almost non existing, they're still modular in some kind of way but with a minimalistic style (see above) it could have been easier to work out. These are some examples, as you can see they're really not clean, and really random on their edges. Looking at them, right now, makes me wanna cry ahah

Overall, we had something like 6 characters with 20 different animations, 10+ tiles and something like 20 props + extra stuff and who knows what I'm forgetting right now.

I must say, I loved that. And seeing the commitment from people who try and comment on games (also thanks to a well thought system, that is) is really encouraging and I hope I can be of use to other devs in the same way they're to our team, devoting time to other people's creations and giving important feedback to someone's work and effort.

This is the link to our game if you'd like to try it out, and obviously let us know what you think and what we can improve/do differently! Thanks everyone and stay safe! Cheers!
